Better Comments Manager – Wordpress Plugin release
Update: TODO list for Better Comments Manager. Thanks to Arpit for the suggestion.
Add AJAX support to the reply to comments from Better Comments Manager PluginThis will be released in version 1.1 Version 1.2 is now available and it includes support which allows you to reply to the comments without loading a new page. Also shows posts title instead of the view link. You can get it here.
I switched to Wordpress about a month ago from Joomla and I absolutely love it. While I was using Joomla I used to create customized mambots, modules and components for my site. Now its turn to give all wordpress users a new plugin.
After the move to Wordpress I had started getting quite a few comments and to reply to them I had to always visit the post and reply from the comments form. This started to become more painful as I wanted to reply to all comments but they were across multiple posts and this made my task of replying to comments a bit difficult.
Then it came across to me that why not have a plugin where I could simply reply to the post from within the comment managing screen, that’s when the idea for Better Comments Manager came to my mind.
I am proud to release my first Wordpress plugin to all users. Hope you like it and can put it to good use.
What is Better Comments Manager?
Better Comments Manager is an extension of the default Wordpress comments manager. I have added two new features to the default Wordpress Comments Manager.
- Reply to comment from within Wordpress Admin Panel.
- View All Comments based by posts.
Ok so you don’t notice anything different than the default comment manager, have a look at this image
Now you see in addition to the normal tasks for a comment, there are two new links one which says Reply and another which says View all.
Features Explained
1. Reply to comment from within Wordpress Admin Panel.
The title says it all, you can reply to every individual comment from within the Wordpress Admin so you do not have to go to individual posts to reply to comments.
Here are few screens which take you through the Reply to comments feature.
Clicking on reply links takes you to a page where you can reply to the comment.
Just enter your reply for the comment and click on Reply to Comment. That’s it the comment will now appear on the post and you didn’t even have to visit the individual post to reply to the user.
Now isn’t this a handy feature. This definitely helps me to interact much better with my readers.
2. View All Comments based by posts.
This is a goodie which I thought should be a part of this plugin, it simply lets you view all the comments based on a particular post. So if you want to see the reactions for a particular post only then you can simply click the View All link in the Better Comments Manager.
This feature helps me track all comments for a particular post and makes organizing comments more better.
Installation
Installation is simple. Just unzip the “better-comments-manager” folder into your plugins folder and activate the plugin. From there, you and your users should be able to edit comments you should be able to edit comments and interact better with your users.
Requirements
Wordpress 2.x and above
Usage
Once you are logged into the Wordpress admin panel, clicking on Comments link will show a sub menu called Better Comments Manager, clicking on that link will allow you to use the features described above.

I do have an error code that generates when I submit a comment from your reply screen. The comment gets saved and appears correctly on the site but the error pops up and does not send me back to the comments screen.
Here’s the error:
Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/jester/public_html/wp-admin/admin-header.php:16) in /home/jester/public_html/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 275

Here’s the screenshot

And of course, it doesn’t post any comment.

Hello, very nice plugin.
i think, it is better, when you change the link to js-library in bcm-edit-comments.php. Then is it not essential, load the own js-library in plugin-folder. WordPress has the librarys in the folder wp-includes/js/ .
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript" src="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/wp-includes/js/prototype.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript" src="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/wp-includes/js/scriptaculous/effects.js"></script>

I adore the concept of this plugin, but perhaps I either a) did something wrong, or b) I’m not using it properly. I was under the impression that this plugin would add the replies directly below the original comment … right now, it posts my replies at the bottom of the page, which isn’t very useful for me. I really like this plugin, but I wanted to ask/let you know that I noticed something in the latest release (1.3). When replying to a comment and manually inputting the html for a link (using the complete anchor link, text, etc), it seems to affect the creation of the first javascript link (the edit link). For some reason, it seems to choke on the addslashes function call in bcm-edit-comments.php line 175. It correctly creates the link with the comment content up until the href in the anchor tag, but then improperly outputs all subsequent comment text.
I only looked at it briefly, but I’ll try to look some more and let you know.
Let me know if this is known and/or anything that I can do to help. Thanks again!

I would like to know if the new version (1.4) is compatible with Wordpress 2.3. Thanks.

It should work fine on 2.3 now, there may be some issues but once I know what they it should work fine. You will get a status to upgrade in your plugins page so that you can upgrade to the latest version hence forth.

version 1.4 has a bug in b-c-m.php. Lines 111 and 115 refer to undefined functions. Change ‘wpau’ to ‘bcm’ and it should work.

I would really like like to say that I love your plugin. It seems that it will offer lots of help to me, once I get an issue worked out. I also use a plugin called “Recaptcha” (which is pretty neat actually – I have written about it here: http://tinyurl.com/ytw8l6 ).
So, Recaptch is a comment spam protection that is visible on my post pages. But, when I use your plugin and try to make a comment, it gets blocked by Recaptcha (saying that I didn’t put in the correct info).
So, is there a way to bypass spam protection within your plugin or can you point to a place in the code where I can put in the recaptcha code so that I can enter in the words allowing me to post?
Can’t wait to try your plugin!

Is the “Better Comments” plug-in compatible with WP version 2.3?? I am asking because it was not listed on the official WP plug-in compatibility list for version 2.3
Please advise.

I’m using this plugin with WP 2.3 but the search feature doesn’t show any results? Also, is the Better Comments Manager tabs supposed to appear twice? It is display at the top level nagivation and comments area?

I am having problems with the recaptcha plug in and this plug in. I can reply but it never shows up. So I contacted recaptcha and they gave me this work around but since I am php challenged and have no idea how to patch anything, I will give everyone the link and hope they know what to do.
I am afraid if I manually add and delete I will mess things up
I did ask for advice and will post what they tell me.
Here was the link:

Any advice?

Hi Keith!
Thanks for your great plugin!
Are you planning to add locale support (for translating into another languages) for the next version?.
It will be great!
In fact, I’m planning to make a spanish translation for the current version, but I’ll not like to make it all over again when new version of BCM gets published

I always thought it was quite the pain to reply to comments and wondered why that ability wasn’t natively in the WP dashboard. Thanks a lot for this very needed plugin!

I use wordpress 2.3 and the latest better comments manager (1.5.1). Whenever I try to reply from the admin panel I get a blank page or go back to the normal comments link. I can do just fine using Minefield (firefox for leopard) but I’m having problems using this with Safari. Do you know how I can fix this?

Hey zoso,
I tested the plugin in WP2.5 and it worked fine, I will check with other users though if they are facing any issues.
Thanks for the heads up though if there is any issue I will release a update shortly.

I’m just about to implement this in 2.5 so hopefully the issue gets resolved (if there IS an issue).
One thing I’ve read is that some plugins will work if they were in a 2.3 installation that is upgraded to 2.5, but not in a vanilla 2.5 install. Something to do with the initial config when you enable the plugin…
Not sure if that’s where the poster having issues is coming from, but might be helpful. Hope to see official 2.5 support soon!

I’m trying to use Better Comments Manager, but cannot seem to reply to the comments. My error console says that buildReplyForm is not defined. Tested in FireFox and IE. Any thoughts as to what may be causing this? Thanks!

Hi there-
I am hoping you can help me. I just downloaded the plugin…but it says ‘no posts match criteria.’
Recently i imported my blog over from wp.com. All my comments are there in the admin ‘comments’ menu, but NONE are listed on any posts. DO you know how i can fix this and what is causing it? I believe this is why the plug in isnt working yet for me.
Thanks so much!

I’ve used this plugin for several weeks, works excellent! I recently upgraded from WP 2.5 to 2.7, and while I don’t see any problems, I was wondering if you were planning on releasing an update and/or could verify it works with 2.7?
Thanks!

I can’t think of an easy way to do that generically, especially given that Wordpress Hashcash can’t whitelist anything, only banlist things it thinks are bad. It would be possible to add this as a special option, though, to drop failing comments into akismet and let it sort it out…

I want to use it – but I have a problem. I secured the /wp-admin/ with a htaccess pass. So I need to enter a pass before I get to the admin-login.
Fine, BUT if I use the Plugin given by you, I need to enter the pass too, but my users of course do not know the pass. How can I get rid of this problem? Any help appreciated.

I both love and hate plugins.
I am on the latest version of WP 2.8.2 and the latest version of Thesis 1.5.1 (or 1.5.2 I can’t remember and too lazy to check). When your plugin is active the post edit window has all the text invisible – I can see my text if I CTRL A, but can’t see it otherwise.
Played with all the other plugins because I didn’t want it to be this one.
I’ll be waiting for a new version and hope that my issue goes away.
Thanks for the effort you’ve put in so far.
