WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2 Release
Update Feb 19th 2009: If you are having issues with upgrading WordPress 2.7 and above, or if WPAU is not displaying a nag to upgrade, we have released a newer version, please read the release post for WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2.5.
Update: WordPress Automatic Upgrade is completely compatible with WordPress 2.6, so go ahead and upgrade now. Enjoy.
Update 1:49 AM EST: Released 1.2.0.1 to update user debug message to use forums instead of emailing me.
Update 2:36 AM EST: Released 1.2.0.2 to fix a issue with Snoopy being instantiated twice on home page loads.
Update 2:46 AM EST: All download links for WPAU lead to the latest release, if you are a regular user you will receive a push update to upgrade the plugin to WordPress 1.2.0.2, please do that it’s mandatory.
Update Friday, July 18 8:30 PM EST: Pushed a new release 1.2.1 which allows users to skip files and database backup steps, this feature was requested by several users.
Update August 21st, 2008: Pushed a new released 1.2.2 to properly fix bugs, also added a new nag to the dashboard when files from old upgrade are not cleared out.
Matt really put me in a fix by releasing WordPress 2.6 almost a month ahead of the scheduled date, this definitely put several of my plans down the drain. That said this version upgrade is just a push release to fix critical bugs that users have been complaining about.
There will be a major release in the next week or two that will bring in a much needed interface changes I have been working on. That said here is a major revision that fixes several bugs and also improves in some areas.
WordPress Automatic Upgrade Consists of quite a few fixes as listed below:
- Fixed a major issue where plugins could not be activated, due to WP installation logging users out after upgrades.
- Fixed a issue where users were not being able to download backup files when WordPress URL and Blog URL were different.
- WordPress Automatic Upgrade will only run if your WordPress is out of date.
- WPAU now uses Snoopy to download files rather than using regular PHP methods.
- Added a WPAU Nag where users will see a message to start automatic upgrade if a new version is available.
- Automatic Upgrade option will only be visible to Administrators.
- Disabled Automated Mode.
- Few other minor changes.
Unfortunately this version does not include fixes where WordPress Automatic Upgrade fails while putting the site into maintenance mode. I have posted a little workaround on the forum for such situations, allowing users to still use WPAU.
I request all the users of WPAU to use the support forum to post your bugs and feature requests, as it’s really painful for me to sift through 100s of mails and comments to find your bug.
Note: While re-activating plugins WordPress may log you out, but do not worry WPAU will take care of the logout and finish the upgrade like normal once you login, just remember to stay in the same browser instance you started the upgrade in.
The automated mode option has been disabled since I am working on a new interface which is much more interactive and worthwhile, so I am phasing out Automatic mode with this release. If anyone of you wants the automatic mode to still work contact me and I will send you the version with automatic mode enabled.
Well like I said there are several features I am leaving out of this release and will bundle it with the WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.3 which I am working on. Here are a list of features that will be included in WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.3.
- A better user interface including verbose output where users will see what’s being done in real time.
- Ability to skip certain tasks or run tasks on demand, so users can run file backups, database backups etc selectively.
- Ability for users to choose the language of WordPress they want to download from.
- Complete Internationalization support.
- Cleanup of code to make WPAU more faster.
Also don’t forget to use the Support forum for WordPress Automatic Upgrade to send me your bugs and queries.
I have already pushed the latest release through WordPress Extend SVN Repository, so old users should see a notice to upgrade the plugin.

Is it possible for a WP plugin developer to be my hero? Well, you are. You are, imo, a genius, and the WPAU plugin has got to be THE BEST plugin ever. It totally rocks, and WP should purchase it from you for a few million dollars. I tell EVERYONE who uses WP about the plugin, because it is just that good. I upgraded 6 blogs last night without even breaking a sweat, all thanks to your plugin – and that’s WITHOUT your update. Now, with this update, and with the upcoming changes, well…you may be elevated beyond hero status.
Seriously…you rock. Thanks for making this plugin.

Hi Donna,
Thanks for the appreciation, it really makes me feel proud. It gives me the encouragement to do more things that will help people without having to expect something in return just because of such appreciations
.
Well that said there are several things in the pipeline and you will definitely see more from me.

I am still using WP 2.5.1. Can I just update WPAU to the latest version and then let it upgrade my blog? Will it be compatible with WP2.5.1?
Btw, I’m using this plugin for my other blog and I’m very sure to upgrade it now.

Thank you so much for this terrific plugin. I just used it to upgrade to WP 2.6. With your plugin, I successfully upgraded without a hitch in under one minute. Without your plugin, upgrading to 2.5 took me over an hour, I broke my blog in the process, and my wife had to restrain me from throwing my laptop through the television set.
In short, your plugin saved my marriage.

Not working — whatever, fine, I’ll update manually. But I can’t delete the directory either. In 2 attempts, uploading didn’t just add the intended 18 files but also
.pureftpd-upload.487f8d05.15.2895.17e1d00c one time, and
.pureftpd-upload.487f8ae3.15.646e.85cdefcd the next.
When I try to delete the directory, I can’t because of these 2 files. When I try to delete the 2 files, I get an error message like:
ERROR 550 Prohibited filename: pureftpd-upload.487f8d05.15.2895.17e1d00c : /public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/.pureftpd-upload.487f8d05.15.2895.17e1d00c
They are 0 0 0 0 files, no read write execute permissions. When I try to change those permissions, I’m not allowed to do that either.
How can I eliminate these files and this directory?

Even though I’ve gone ahead and transitioned my main WP-install to SVN for even easier updates, I just wanted to thank you and give you kudos for all the hard work you’ve done with this plugin. I often use it for my MAMP installs and recommend it to people who are less tech savvy and fear upgrades.
I never had a problem upgrading the standard way, but the plugin just made it THAT much easier (and as I said, this is a godsend for people who either can’t be bothered doing all the usual stuff or are truly afraid of mucking something up).
This is the type of thing that should absolutely be included in default WP-installs (it can be disabled for users who want control).

During the upgrade of the plugin (which still updated to WP2.6 just fine) I got the following:
———————
Upgrade Plugin
Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.2.1.zip
Unpacking the update
Deactivating the plugin
Removing the old version of the plugin
Could not remove the old plugin
Installation Failed
————————
Not sure why? I just manually upgraded, but thought you should know.

Hi Keith,
Does this work if I have a very old version fo wordpress to upgrade from, ie v2.0.3?
I heard that the way wordpress interfaces with the SQL database has changed, and thus will have a problem if I upgrade directly from the older version to the new version?
Thanks

I was disappointed to discover that after installing this plug-in, then trying the automatic upgrade, I could no longer login to my administrative panel — no matter what I tried. So after spending too much time to try to fix it, I just gave up and did a clean install — anyone had a similar problem? I’d be hesitant to install this plug-in again…hopefully future versions will not produce such an error.

It’s not a big deal since you’ve saved me so much time on the upgrade process, but I might as well make the suggestion. =)

In trying to run WPAU from WP-2.60 -> 2.61 I got this output;
“Oops we cannot run the WordPress Automatic Update on your site. We are currently trying to fix issues for systems like yours and will release a new version shortly.”
CentOS: 5.02 64 bit
Plesk: 8.30
WPAU: 1.2.1
Some clarification on the above output would be greatly appreciated. It’s unclear to this writer exactly what problem WPAU is encountering.

This fails at trying to put the blog into maintenance mode. Yes, I’ve visted your forum and the “fix” you posted doesn’t work.
Why does the blog need to be in maintenance mode anyway? I’m the only author. If I’m upgrading, believe me I’m not creating new posts.
How about an option to skip maintenance mode and just perform the upgrade?

Hi–
I really like your plugin. It has saved me much time.
There is one minor irritation: it never automatically upgrades itself. I cringe every time you have an update, because I know it will fail, then I will have to download, unzip, upload to my site, reactivate and check to see if everything is up to date.
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

So i guess no way for me to use wordpress automatic update. I’ve looked around and found wordpress instant update. Installed it and tried it… it works flawlessly. The only thing I had to do is set file and folder permissions manually.

the wpau-backup issue
I am working to get my WP 2.6.1 to 2.6.2 upgraded. Damn, this has been a troublesome upgrade! First, I used your plugin, it deactivated AskApache Password Protect and I can’t get that one running anymore. The rest I did manually (other WP installations), but also there problems. Then when I was going through the server files with FTP, I saw that I DO have the wpau-backup folder (contrary to what I said on the WP forum). The worst thing is: no matter what I do, I can’t delete or rename that folder. File permissions are read 3x, writing (owner and world!!) and execute all again. The only thing I could change were those permissions, so I simply deny everything, no reading, writing or executing for anyone.
Still, a strange thing and in the light of the previous exploitation discussion, still not a good sign, right?

Pls upload latest version on your blog too. Latest version is 1.2.2 and your blog currently has 1.2.1 or either provide users the link to latest plugin release page i.e.: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/

This is an awesome plugin.. Till today that is!
It went through the upgrade fine, and I am told to click on a link to complete the upgrade process, then the plugin will automatically update my plugins.
I click the link, and it tells me I have to login again. I enter my info, and it says the password is incorrect.
My blog is still online, but I cannot login to wp-admin anymore..
Can anyone please help??

Umm, anyone wanna jump in on this one?
TASK OUTPUT
Oops we cannot run the WordPress Automatic Update on your site. We are currently trying to fix issues for systems like yours and will release a new version shortly.
That’s not exactly helpful. It would be a lot more helpful if the plugin could run its own logs so that the site operator can get some clue about what “issues for systems like yours” actually are, and report back with definitive data.

I updated to 2.6.3 today and noticed that the database backup step didn’t work. Not a big issue as I just did a regular db backup, but it might cause concern for the non-technical user.
The db backup step hung with a white screen. I attempted twice, then did my regular backup and skipped the step.

It seems that if your main page is different from where you install wordpress, the plugin cannot proceed the upgrade.

I very much enjoyed using this upgrade plugin, and am looking forward to new plugins by you!
With that said, 2.7 includes the Automatic Upgrade functionality in it’s core, so this plugin will become unnecessary. It was very useful while I needed it, but like I said, I can’t wait to see what you do next

I had same problem as user said before:
In trying to run WPAU from WP-2.60 -> 2.61 (mine is current version) I got this output;
“Oops we cannot run the WordPress Automatic Update on your site. We are currently trying to fix issues for systems like yours and will release a new version shortly.”
Some clarification on the above output would be greatly appreciated. It’s unclear to this writer exactly what problem WPAU is encountering.

Using the latest version and updating from 2.5.1 The upgrade was a partial success. The stage of reactivating plugins failed to happen. Upgrade success message was presented but with all plugins deactivated. I had to manually reactivate all plugins
Another question: does the plugin reinstall plugins with exactly the same settings? This is an important consideration as some pligin settings are lost with deactivation.
Thanks.

Ok, some more feedback on the above: The problem was that I was asked to login again after the datbase upgrade. After this I was sent to an admin page that had a message ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ A bit confusingas there was no precedant. What I should have done is ignore the admin page after login and returned to the original admin page. Here the next stage of reactivating plugins was still waiting for my prompt. And yes, it does keep all plugin settings, but I’m not sure how I got lost after upgrade admin login.

Hi,
I installed this plugin on my site few days back. Worked smoothly and i was able to upgrade wordpress.
However, since today, all of a sudden, it showed fatal errors. I was unable to view my site as well access my WP admin panel.
The error is this:
Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/home/sssmcom1/tmp) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/mobilemo/:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/tmp) in /home/mobilemo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.php on line 119
Fatal error: session_start() [function.session-start]: Failed to initialize storage module: files (path: ) in /home/mobilemo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.php on line 119
I did not ever play with the codes of the plugin. To see that my data is still present, ultimately i had to delete the plugin using FTP (had no other choice).
But, now there is another problem, i still cannot view my site or access my dashboard since my theme also uses a session_start() function.
Pls, tell me what to do? My website is down due to this and this is certainly not good for it.
A reply and solution will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Keith, what a time saver this plugin is when managing multiple blogs. Any thoughts about creating a version of the wordpress automatic upgrade plugin so people who run multiple blogs would be able to login to a primary account/server and update all their blogs from that one server even with wordpress running on other remote servers/db’s? Once i update one server I know i still need to login to a lot more and upgrade them all it would be great to have control of that from one place and see the status of each servers update being shown in real time with some ajax.

I wondered about the delay in Automatic Upgrade notifying me when there is a new version. It is usually several days after the new version is available before Automatic Upgrade gives me the option to upgrade. Is there anyways to ‘nudge it’ when I know a new release is out and it hasn’t identified it yet? Thank you so much for this wonderful plugin!

Hey Man,
couple things:
1. thanks for this plugin. total lifesaver! been using it since forever.
2. just used it to upgrade a 2.3 to 2.7 – very smooth.
3. enabled gears/turbo on the site and it had one issue which I wonder if it is related … it could not download /path/to/site/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/media/img/flv_player.swf
The resolution was that i had to download 2.7 from wp.org and ftp that file up myself., then it all worked. if this turns out not ot be related to your plugin, ignore.
4. your bbPress forum is in need of some repair … we’re seeing this at the top of the page:
[quote]
bbPress database error: [Table './bbpress/bb_usermeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]
SELECT * FROM bb_usermeta WHERE user_id = ‘3650′ AND meta_key = ‘bb_capabilities’
bbPress database error: [Table './bbpress/bb_usermeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]
INSERT INTO bb_usermeta ( user_id, meta_key, meta_value ) VALUES ( ‘3650′, ‘bb_capabilities’, ‘a:1:{s:6:\”member\”;b:1;}’ )
bbPress database error: [Table './bbpress/bb_usermeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]
SELECT meta_key, meta_value FROM bb_usermeta WHERE user_id = ‘3650′
bbPress database error: [Table './bbpress/bb_usermeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]

bbPress database error: [Table './bbpress/bb_usermeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]
SELECT meta_key, meta_value FROM bb_usermeta WHERE user_id = ‘3650′

it’s not so bad, except when the action requires a redirect and it can’t.
ok, have a good one.
peace,
Jim

Stuck in maintenance mode? I’ve searched high and low for a resolution to this issue both here and in the forums. Although countless people have experienced this issue, the plugin author has not responded to a single request for help (at least that I can find). The only solution I know of is to replace your index.php file from a wordpress fresh install. I just grabbed a copy from another blog I own. Not sure what causes the error, and it sure would be nice if the plugin author would address/fix this problem.

Hi,
Thanks for this awesome plugin! However, I’ve run into some problems due to the “Admin SSL” plugin, that encrypts the dashboard.
When I try to finish the updating process, WPAU can’t find the correct final page, and the url becomes something like an indefinite redirect. If you know what I mean?
Can this be avoided?
Best regards,

today 2.7.1 of wordpress came out but WPAU wasn’t responding. No yellow line telling me to upgrade, only the one of wordpress itself. Going to WPAU it told me my wordpress didn’t need to upgrade. I hope this will be fixed soon, because I really love WPAU to upgrade de many blogs I help to maintain. It is really a great plugin, making the backup for you, handeling the plugins etc. The upgrade possibility in wordpress is nothing in comparising with WPAU.

Thank you for your wonderful plugin. I’ve used it quite happily until WP came out with their own. It hosed my theme completely and doesn’t do backups. I’ll probably never, ever use it again. Please keep this thing going. I vastly prefer it to their “upgrade” (which reset the blog to “like new” basically, wiping out many hours of careful PHP editing to make my CSS work).

That’s correct, 2.7 does not offer the db backup, file backup, and plugin deactivation. These are the things that made WPAU such an essential and critical part of a wordpress implementation. I wish this would work with 2.7.1…

I’d like to second the requests to keep WPUA active. The backup features, deactivation/reactivation, etc., make this a much more useful tool than the built-in auto-upgrade. (Or if you don’t want to maintain it any more, can you pass the code over to whoever is maintaining the built-in Wordpress auto-upgrade so they can incorporate the features?)

Count me in as a HUGE fan of this plugin. I’d love 2.7x support for this plugin. The 2.7 automated upgrade feature does not work for me. Yours worked like a charm! I think the WP devs should have asked for your plugin to be added to the core of 2.7 if they wanted to add an automated upgrade feature!

Question: How do I upgrade automatically from Wordpress 2.7 to the newer versions coming out (ie: 2.7.1)?
Answer: Upgrades are built in starting with 2.7 and up. Tools->Upgrade.
Make sure you Create the /wp-content/upgrade directory (it was not present), set permissions to 777, then update the permissions in wp-content/plugins to 777 as well. Finally, I emptied /wp-content/cache – and plugins are now updating successfully.

I would give my first born for an upgrade to this great plug-in so it can handle 2.7. WP’s built-in automatic upgrade does not, as many here can attest, work and spits out errors on the core unpack.
Keith’s plug-in worked sooooo well that I’m spoiled rotten by software that made upgrading almost enjoyable. Now, I’ll be lucky to be upgrading at all since the alternative to the auto that doesn’t work is to do it by hand. Yuck.
We should all pony up to paypal and beg Keith for an upgrade to handle future WP updates. Thanks, Keith.

I just tried to use the auto update plugin to upgrade wordpress to 2.7.1. I then get these errors and it fails.
The first is due to suhosin not liking that wordpress is trying to change the memory_limit. I am not sure if it is this plugin that caused the issue or if it is in wordpress itself but hopefully this will help you.

Thank you so much for updating your plugin so that I could upgrade to 2.7.1 — your plugin lets me upgrade automatically and seamlessly, and the built-in WP function does not work for me.
Count me as one vote to continue development of this awesome plugin.

I get the same error (”Fatal error: Call to undefined function: current_user_can()”) as Nick mentioned above, on Sep 11/2008, but not the database error. I also have WP 1.5.2 and can’t seem to use the plugin (downloaded from wordpress.org on Mar 6/09). Any ideas what might be wrong?

i have 2.2.1 manually updated twice and put it back did not work. auto update plugin did not work till i turned off the rest of the plugins then it did not work for the backups (i did that manually before so that was ok) i got a screen with the menu above and blank below…. so i got to the dl the latest wp and that also gave me a blank pane no matter how long i waited…. this plugin does not work for me …. i think the only thing now is to move the db elsewhere and set it up on a new fresh install instead of a upgrade and see if that works… if it does i can put it on the domain i need it on with fresh install instead of a upgrade…. why cant it be simple? oh and i tried this in ie7 and ff too.

Awsome work! I love this plugin. I have just upgraded to 2.7, made it so easy. All backups + updated files were done preoperly and within 5 mintues.
Deactivated + activated all my plugins for me, cleaned up old wordpress files and all i did was click a few buttons. No more manual upgrading here!
Thanks again for the great plugin, will be donating towards your site

Is there anyway to specify with file it grabs from Wordpress. I need to do a downgrade back to 2.7.1 as 2.8 is hosed. If you could do that, it would be great or tell me if it is just a matter of grabbing a different Archive file. There a boat load of people that are having problems with 2.8 blowing up their site.

I used wpau to upgrade but the wysiwyg editor was gone. The website I upgraded manually was fine. After manually overwriting the wp-includes directory the wysiwyg editor was there again. In the upgrade there is somewhere a problem with the wp-include. Everything is working on the sites I’ve upgraded, but after I put the wp-included manually on the server again.

Hi, I’m Doris from The Netherlands.
I also think this plugin is great, but… yesterday, two sites I updated lost their icons in the editor after updating, luckily we could restore this by re-installing the wpincludes directory.
The next thing that really worries me because I can’t solve it: on another site I also wanted to do the automatic update, but I was asked for ftp information.
After I provided this, I had a huge problem: I can no longer reach the wp-admin part, it gives the message: Nothing found for Wp-admin Page Php
I really hope someone can help met out! I’m totally clueless off what to do now?

used WAU 1.2.5 to upgrade from 2.7.1 to 2.8 on 3 different blogs and immediately had issues with the visual editor not displaying, eventually discovered that I was missing files, manually added said files and visual editor returned, so at least my problems with 2.8 directly related to incomplete install through WAU 1.2.5

I just used your tool to upgrade a site and it worked – sort of. I ended up with one file that did not copy over so my WYSIWYG editing did not work. Call me stupid, but I did not write down which file it was, assuming that it was a fluke. Now I’ve just upgraded another site and had the same problem so I’m off searching for that file again. I may just do a clean install, probably faster.
Oh yeah, in the DIY forums there are a couple people with the same issue – I’m not the lone ranger.
Cheers

The File that was not completed in the installation is the: wlwmanifest.xml
However, I replaced this file using a FTP and it did not solve the problem. When you say you did a clean install of the /wp-includes, do you mean you just uploaded the entire folder via ftp or just certain files? What is the safest way to do this because my dashboard is still all messed up? Thanks.

There is an issue when the blog site is secured with https. IE is the only one that notifies of the issue just cause IE is stupid, but it will display the message “this page uses both secure and non-secure items”. It is really annoying and only displays when your plugin is enabled. I really like your plugin so is it possible to fix it so it is compatible with IE. I can’t use anything but IE at work so if I do not get it fixed I will be forced to stop using your plugin.
Note:
I do not want to change IE’s security settings. That is not an answer.

It went through the upgrade fine, and I am told to click on a link to complete the upgrade process, then the plugin will automatically update my plugins. And I click the link, and it tells me I have to login again. I enter my info, and it says the password is incorrect.

Hello,
I’m running WP 2.8.4, with v. 1.2.5 of automatic upgrade. I’m not sure when or why it happened, but my blog’s feedburner feed is stuck in Maintenance Mode with the WAP message:
“The Site is currently undergoing maintenance, Sorry for the inconvinience
Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin provided by Techie Buzz.”
On a side note, does 2.8.4 have an auto-updater as a built-in feature now?
Thanks for any insight you can give for bringing my feed back from the dead.

And when I tried creating the index.html file manually it gives me a similar error but it disappears and is being replaced with the message about the last upgrade files weren’t cleaned out, and it leaves me in a loop like this.
Please help. I find this plugin very helpful (before it started spitting out these error messages).

@jentruth – Login to the FTP site and delete index.php from the root WordPress directory, after that rename the index.wpau.bak file to index.php, this should resolve your problem.
For detailed instructions please take a look at this forum topic. http://forum.techie-buzz.com/topic/upgrade-issue-site-stuck-in-maintenance-mode

When I click on “Click here” to begin update. I get a blank page. Nothing happens. I tried skipping the backup steps, but I still got a blank page when I click on “get latest version of wordpress.” Nothing happens. I’ve tried numerous times on two different computers.
Anyone have any ideas?
