WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2 Release
Update: WordPress Automatic Upgrade is completely compatible with WordPress 2.6, so go ahead and upgrade now. Enjoy.
Update 1:49 AM EST: Released 1.2.0.1 to update user debug message to use forums instead of emailing me.
Update 2:36 AM EST: Released 1.2.0.2 to fix a issue with Snoopy being instantiated twice on home page loads.
Update 2:46 AM EST: All download links for WPAU lead to the latest release, if you are a regular user you will receive a push update to upgrade the plugin to WordPress 1.2.0.2, please do that it’s mandatory.
Update Friday, July 18 8:30 PM EST: Pushed a new release 1.2.1 which allows users to skip files and database backup steps, this feature was requested by several users.
Update August 21st, 2008: Pushed a new released 1.2.2 to properly fix bugs, also added a new nag to the dashboard when files from old upgrade are not cleared out.
Matt really put me in a fix by releasing WordPress 2.6 almost a month ahead of the scheduled date, this definitely put several of my plans down the drain. That said this version upgrade is just a push release to fix critical bugs that users have been complaining about.
There will be a major release in the next week or two that will bring in a much needed interface changes I have been working on. That said here is a major revision that fixes several bugs and also improves in some areas.
WordPress Automatic Upgrade Consists of quite a few fixes as listed below:
- Fixed a major issue where plugins could not be activated, due to WP installation logging users out after upgrades.
- Fixed a issue where users were not being able to download backup files when WordPress URL and Blog URL were different.
- WordPress Automatic Upgrade will only run if your WordPress is out of date.
- WPAU now uses Snoopy to download files rather than using regular PHP methods.
- Added a WPAU Nag where users will see a message to start automatic upgrade if a new version is available.
- Automatic Upgrade option will only be visible to Administrators.
- Disabled Automated Mode.
- Few other minor changes.
Unfortunately this version does not include fixes where WordPress Automatic Upgrade fails while putting the site into maintenance mode. I have posted a little workaround on the forum for such situations, allowing users to still use WPAU.
I request all the users of WPAU to use the support forum to post your bugs and feature requests, as it’s really painful for me to sift through 100s of mails and comments to find your bug.
Note: While re-activating plugins WordPress may log you out, but do not worry WPAU will take care of the logout and finish the upgrade like normal once you login, just remember to stay in the same browser instance you started the upgrade in.
The automated mode option has been disabled since I am working on a new interface which is much more interactive and worthwhile, so I am phasing out Automatic mode with this release. If anyone of you wants the automatic mode to still work contact me and I will send you the version with automatic mode enabled.
Well like I said there are several features I am leaving out of this release and will bundle it with the WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.3 which I am working on. Here are a list of features that will be included in WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.3.
- A better user interface including verbose output where users will see what’s being done in real time.
- Ability to skip certain tasks or run tasks on demand, so users can run file backups, database backups etc selectively.
- Ability for users to choose the language of WordPress they want to download from.
- Complete Internationalization support.
- Cleanup of code to make WPAU more faster.
Also don’t forget to use the Support forum for WordPress Automatic Upgrade to send me your bugs and queries.
I have already pushed the latest release through WordPress Extend SVN Repository, so old users should see a notice to upgrade the plugin.

This is by far the most amazing plugins I have used for WP. I upgraded to 2.6 with the old version, no issues.
Thanks for the kind words Nirmal
Is it possible for a WP plugin developer to be my hero? Well, you are. You are, imo, a genius, and the WPAU plugin has got to be THE BEST plugin ever. It totally rocks, and WP should purchase it from you for a few million dollars. I tell EVERYONE who uses WP about the plugin, because it is just that good. I upgraded 6 blogs last night without even breaking a sweat, all thanks to your plugin - and that’s WITHOUT your update. Now, with this update, and with the upcoming changes, well…you may be elevated beyond hero status.
Seriously…you rock. Thanks for making this plugin.
Hi Donna,
Thanks for the appreciation, it really makes me feel proud. It gives me the encouragement to do more things that will help people without having to expect something in return just because of such appreciations :).
Well that said there are several things in the pipeline and you will definitely see more from me.
Keith
Well I have a problem with it:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class snoopy in E:\inetpub\vhosts\elektrix.si\httpdocs\wordpress\wp-includes\class-snoopy.php on line 47
Any ideas?
Wordpress 2.6
Thanks OBELIKS, the issue has been fixed download using the same link or wait for visit WordPress plugin page to automatically upgrade.
Such a great plugin.Hats Off.I just used it today to upgrade to 2.6.No problem! step by step guide.I also recommended in my blog to use this plugin.
Thankx to the creator.
Brilliant plugin, used the old version to upgrade a site to 2.6 and didn’t have any problems. Glad to know that you released an updated version for 2.6
I am still using WP 2.5.1. Can I just update WPAU to the latest version and then let it upgrade my blog? Will it be compatible with WP2.5.1?
Btw, I’m using this plugin for my other blog and I’m very sure to upgrade it now.
Thanks keith.
Last time i used this i had some problem. It didn’t activated any plugin last time..
Any reason why you disabled the automatic mode. It was really convenient. This step by step mode is painful
Can we have that back.
I’m running into the Site Maintenance error. I have phpsuexec installed on my server, so I don’t need to set permissions.
Thank you so much for this terrific plugin. I just used it to upgrade to WP 2.6. With your plugin, I successfully upgraded without a hitch in under one minute. Without your plugin, upgrading to 2.5 took me over an hour, I broke my blog in the process, and my wife had to restrain me from throwing my laptop through the television set.
In short, your plugin saved my marriage.
Can I use this to go from WP 2.3.2 to the current version? This thing looks cool!!
Hi,
Thanks for this plugin. It’s really convenient for those who are not so familiar with upgrading manually. And it’s also great to know internationalization support will be added.
Thanks again!
Regards
Leo
Can you use this to upgrade from a 2.3 version up to the latest version in one step?
Thanks for this plugin. It worked flawlessly doing my upgrade.
Great plugin. Worked flawlessly.
very good plugin!
Not working — whatever, fine, I’ll update manually. But I can’t delete the directory either. In 2 attempts, uploading didn’t just add the intended 18 files but also
.pureftpd-upload.487f8d05.15.2895.17e1d00c one time, and
.pureftpd-upload.487f8ae3.15.646e.85cdefcd the next.
When I try to delete the directory, I can’t because of these 2 files. When I try to delete the 2 files, I get an error message like:
ERROR 550 Prohibited filename: pureftpd-upload.487f8d05.15.2895.17e1d00c : /public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/.pureftpd-upload.487f8d05.15.2895.17e1d00c
They are 0 0 0 0 files, no read write execute permissions. When I try to change those permissions, I’m not allowed to do that either.
How can I eliminate these files and this directory?
Did your uploads stopped half way? The file is actually a temp file created when you have problem with your uploads.
Thanks! This plugin will be very handy for upgrading! Cheers
Even though I’ve gone ahead and transitioned my main WP-install to SVN for even easier updates, I just wanted to thank you and give you kudos for all the hard work you’ve done with this plugin. I often use it for my MAMP installs and recommend it to people who are less tech savvy and fear upgrades.
I never had a problem upgrading the standard way, but the plugin just made it THAT much easier (and as I said, this is a godsend for people who either can’t be bothered doing all the usual stuff or are truly afraid of mucking something up).
This is the type of thing that should absolutely be included in default WP-installs (it can be disabled for users who want control).
During the upgrade of the plugin (which still updated to WP2.6 just fine) I got the following:
———————
Upgrade Plugin
Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.2.1.zip
Unpacking the update
Deactivating the plugin
Removing the old version of the plugin
Could not remove the old plugin
Installation Failed
————————
Not sure why? I just manually upgraded, but thought you should know.
Hi Keith,
Does this work if I have a very old version fo wordpress to upgrade from, ie v2.0.3?
I heard that the way wordpress interfaces with the SQL database has changed, and thus will have a problem if I upgrade directly from the older version to the new version?
Thanks
I updated 2 blogs, worked beautifully!
Then with the 3rd one I ran into this (after clicking “Get the Latest Version from wordpress.org”):
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 500001 bytes) in /home/hunrealc/public_html/realestate/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/lib/snoopy.class.php on line 900
Any ideas?
I upgraded to 2.6 without issues. Awesome plug in! I donated for this one. It saved me time and anxiety.
For some reason, the Automatic Update plug in says everything was updated successfully, but my site still says it is 2.5.1? Anyone else have this issue?
I have to echo so many in saying what a great plugin this is. I’ve upgraded a few of ours but on one that’s going from 2.21 to the latest I get “Oops sorry you are not authorized to do this” on the first step after it does the check and I believe it after clicking the “Let’s Go” box. Any ideas?
Thanks
I have tried to activate the plugin on my WordPress installation, but I am getting an Error 500 - Internal server error. Any thoughts on why this could be happening? Thanks!
I activated and started the Updater. Everything was going just fine until I got kicked out of the system and forced to Login again. I can’t login at all - I even reset my password and I’m still blocked.
Help!
My site is still online and everything appears to be working fine, but I can’t get in…
Joe,
I’m having the same problem. It doesn’t look like anyone responded to your question. Have you been able to log back in? If so, how did you do it?
Michael
This is a nice plugin
Keith Dsouza,
your plugin work very well on the site i tested it, only one problem comes out after upgrading i have to restore file and folder permission to come out of a server 500 error, maybe plugin have to read file and folder permission before upgrading and set it as he found it.
ciao
I got the following error after installing the plugin and activating it:
WordPress database error: [Table 'miasik.wpau_upgrade_log' doesn't exist]
SELECT count(*) as counter from wpau_upgrade_log
It is displayed in Administration/Automatic Upgrade tab.
I’m stuck in Maintenance mode ! The update worked fine and finished fine…
Still my blog keeps saying:
The Site is currently undergoing maintenance, Sorry for the inconvinience
Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin provided by Techie Buzz.
Any idea ?
Thanks
JL
I like this plugin a lot, but I have one bug to report. For some reason when I upgraded it set my character encoding to UTF-6 which caused my new posts to be truncated. Everything was fine once I changed to UTF-8. I’m not sure how or why this happend but I thought you should know.
Cheers
I updated and got this:
Warning: main(/home4/wadehodg/wadehodges-www/wp-load.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home4/wadehodg/wadehodges-www/wp-blog-header.php on line 12

Blog is down completely.
any ideas?
Thanks

Help!
Tried running the plugin, which seemed to work, until I completed it. It hasn’t updated the site, and the main page is stuck in maintenance mode. Deleted index.php as instructed in the FAQ, and renamed index.php.wpau.bak file to index.php.
Now I get this:
Warning: main() [function.main]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 99 is not allowed to access ./wp-blog-header.php owned by uid 32251 in /home/jonwil50/public_html/index.php on line 4

Can anyone help? How do I restore the site?
Thanks for plugin upgraded to 2.6 in 6-7 steps.. rock on..
I was disappointed to discover that after installing this plug-in, then trying the automatic upgrade, I could no longer login to my administrative panel — no matter what I tried. So after spending too much time to try to fix it, I just gave up and did a clean install — anyone had a similar problem? I’d be hesitant to install this plug-in again…hopefully future versions will not produce such an error.
this plugin has broken two sites that i have tried to use it on. I am doing a clean install now.
Hey
First of all- Thanks for the plugin.
I installed version 1.2.1.
When i follow the step “Get the Latest Version from wordpress.org”, I get this error: “Warning: set_time_limit(): Cannot set time limit in safe mode in wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wpau_upgrade.class.php on line 54 In hereFinished Unzipping In here”
What to do?
Thanks,
Shlomi.A.
I like it! Thanks
This is an amazing plugin! Thank you so much! One suggestion I have is to have it rebuild permalinks after upgrading. I have to do this manually after running the plugin for my site to work properly. It’s not a big deal since you’ve saved me so much time on the upgrade process, but I might as well make the suggestion. =)
Thanks again!
In trying to run WPAU from WP-2.60 -> 2.61 I got this output;
“Oops we cannot run the WordPress Automatic Update on your site. We are currently trying to fix issues for systems like yours and will release a new version shortly.”
CentOS: 5.02 64 bit
Plesk: 8.30
WPAU: 1.2.1
Some clarification on the above output would be greatly appreciated. It’s unclear to this writer exactly what problem WPAU is encountering.
I’d just like to say thank you for the best plugin I have ever used with wordpress.
It is one of the most useful and easy to use piece of software I have seen and am happily recommending it to friends who use WP.
I’ve had no problems when using this on two different blogs, thank you again for an excellent tool for every WP user.
Just upgraded from 2.6 to 2.6.1 just fine.
Cheers
Tim
This fails at trying to put the blog into maintenance mode. Yes, I’ve visted your forum and the “fix” you posted doesn’t work.
Why does the blog need to be in maintenance mode anyway? I’m the only author. If I’m upgrading, believe me I’m not creating new posts.
How about an option to skip maintenance mode and just perform the upgrade?
Do you know why upgrading to WP 2.6.1 using Wordpress Automatic Upgrade 1.2, there’s such an error shown?
500 Server Error
A misconfiguration on the server caused a hiccup. Check the server logs, fix the problem, then try again.

hi. Thanks for plugin
perfect.

Hi–
I really like your plugin. It has saved me much time.
There is one minor irritation: it never automatically upgrades itself. I cringe every time you have an update, because I know it will fail, then I will have to download, unzip, upload to my site, reactivate and check to see if everything is up to date.
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?
:- Doug.
Thanks for this awesome plugin
It’s not automatic anymore. It makes me do everything step by step.
When I checked by blog, it is of 2.2 version. How could I directly upgrade it to the present version. Will there be any problem with the usage of plugin?
When I try to do the upgrade, the following error appears:
Fatal error: exec() [function.exec]: Command `ls -l /www/htdocs/ralfen/index.php |awk ‘{print $1}’` not found in ACL in /www/htdocs/ralfen/wp-content/plugins/wordpress_automatic_upgrade/wpau_prelimcheck.class.php on line 99
I’ve googled for this issue, but haven’t been able to find any solutions.
Please help!
Thanks
best plugin ever used!
just click , click and finish!
there is a problem with the plugin that shows some kind of scripting js or php….
any website with tje plugin add this to the link
http://www.urweb.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/js/wp-wpau.js.php
u’ll see
there is a problem with the plugin that if u add an url pointing to wp-wpau.js file u’ll see js code
add this too ur url
http://www.urweb.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/js/wp-wpau.js.php..
i noticed that because the stast in my web are growing up and people is going directly to that url…. i dont see any problem because everything looks secured and they dont have access to any information of the db, but u should check that problem.
I’m having trouble with the first step of the process. When I click the link to download the backup .zip file, I get nothing. It is as if the file is not being created properly.
I just updated the plugin to version 1.2.2, any ideas?
Hi again,
I’ve contacted my host with the “Fatal error: exec() [function.exec]:” error…
They’ve confiremd to me that my host has a protection which doesn’t allow for this function to be executed.
So i guess no way for me to use wordpress automatic update. I’ve looked around and found wordpress instant update. Installed it and tried it… it works flawlessly. The only thing I had to do is set file and folder permissions manually.
After installing the plugin I get a message that states “Your server is running in safe mode. WPAU cannot continue in safe mode. Please ask your system administrator to change the setting to disble running in safe mode”
What do I do?
-TheYoungGuy
Ask your host to disable php safe mode for you.
WordPress 2.6.2 is out. Is it safe to update with your plugin? Thanks
It’s not even recognizing the 2.6.2 update for me.
Any reason why 2.6.2 isn’t being detected by WPAU?
http://wordpress.org/development/2008/09/wordpress-262/
the wpau-backup issue
I am working to get my WP 2.6.1 to 2.6.2 upgraded. Damn, this has been a troublesome upgrade! First, I used your plugin, it deactivated AskApache Password Protect and I can’t get that one running anymore. The rest I did manually (other WP installations), but also there problems. Then when I was going through the server files with FTP, I saw that I DO have the wpau-backup folder (contrary to what I said on the WP forum). The worst thing is: no matter what I do, I can’t delete or rename that folder. File permissions are read 3x, writing (owner and world!!) and execute all again. The only thing I could change were those permissions, so I simply deny everything, no reading, writing or executing for anyone.
Still, a strange thing and in the light of the previous exploitation discussion, still not a good sign, right?
hi. thanks for plugin .Perfect but i need ur help. please, help me
How can I download full Backs up ? (ex : wp-content, themes,pictures…)
Best Regards
I’m having trouble with this plugin. I’m trying to upgrade from WordPress ver 1.5.2. When I enter Wordpress Automatic Upgrade, I get this message at the top:
WordPress database error: [Table 'spedge2.wpau_upgrade_log' doesn't exist]
SELECT count(*) as counter from wpau_upgrade_log
Then I start the upgrade and I get this message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: current_user_can() in /raid/home/bucqui/spedge/spartanedge/blogs/spartanedge18/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.php on line 860
ANY SUGGESTIONS? I’ve used your plugin on different blogs before and it’s been very helpful. I would greatly appreciate not having to go about the upgrade some other more complicated way. Thanks!
Pls upload latest version on your blog too. Latest version is 1.2.2 and your blog currently has 1.2.1 or either provide users the link to latest plugin release page i.e.: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/
On my localhost where I run Xampp, I could easly upgrade from wp 2.0.11 to 2.6.2 whit the old version, but on my host, I could not. It gave me errors about it could not create a lot of things. I upgradet to the latest version of Atomatic upgrade, and my whole dashboard gets blank..
Any idea?
Best regards, John J
Thank you for real good and usefull wp plugin.
This is da best plugin I’ve ever used! Just click the button and it’s done!
Hello,
does “WordPress Automatic Upgrade” work with all languages? For me: German? Or do I have an English version after upgrading with “WordPress Automatic Upgrade”?
Thanks for your support.
Dennis
Could u make a maintenance mode plugin?
\Frederik
Wow, this is so easy plugin. It really helped my sister’s site since she doesn’t have a cpanel for herself. She used to upgrade it manually, thanks for the plugin. Great work
great work! thanks!!
This is an awesome plugin.. Till today that is!
It went through the upgrade fine, and I am told to click on a link to complete the upgrade process, then the plugin will automatically update my plugins.
I click the link, and it tells me I have to login again. I enter my info, and it says the password is incorrect.
My blog is still online, but I cannot login to wp-admin anymore..
Can anyone please help??
