Manage Multiple Blogs Release
After lots of work in fact more than 3500 lines of code later I am finally glad to announce the beta release of Manage Multiple Blogs. This plugin allows you to manage your external blogs from a single central blog. Yes now you don’t need to logon to multiple blogs if you want to write a post, edit a post, manage categories and yes manage your comments including approving, disapproving, spamming it, replying to it, threaded reply and more.
Before I talk about the features let me start by telling you what does not work first.
- Uploading of images while writing a post.
- Adding a category while writing a post.
- No automatic draft saves.
- Have only tested on WordPress 2.0 and above so no support for any requests on WordPress versions below this.
Except for the few things I said above which I am working on to get out with the next release the rest of the functionality is quite matching that of your regular WordPress installation. You could say it’s a mini WordPress in itself.
Ok with my TODO list out of the way let’s get back to knowing how Manage Multiple Blogs work and its features.
- Add a post / draft to another blog from within the admin panel.
- Edit a post / draft from another blog from within the admin panel.
- Delete a post / draft from another blog from within the admin panel.
- Publish a post / draft from another blog from within the admin panel.
- Add Categories to another blog from within the admin panel.
- Delete Categories from another blog from within the admin panel.
- Manage Comments including actions like approve, disapprove, spam and delete and tasks like reply threaded and reply new on another blog within the admin panel.
You require enough permissions on the external blog to undertake any of the above tasks. Comments management will only work if you install the Manage Multiple Blog RPC for comments plugin installed on the external site (the site you want to manage). Due to security reasons the comments manager will only work if you have administrator or editor privileges.
How does Manage Multiple Blogs Work?
Manage Multiple Blogs uses WordPress RPC (Remote Procedure Call Protocol) to do everything that is listed above. Once you add your credentials MMB will take care of doing the other tasks except for comment management for which you need to have Manage Multiple Blogs Comments RPC plugin installed on your external blog.

Once MMB has verified your credentials with the external blog you will see that the blog has been added and you can start managing it. Screen shot below.
Note the Blog Name and Username will vary depending on what your blog name and username is.
Now that you have added the blog you can either edit or delete it which is pure blog management functions. If you ever change your password on your external blog then you have to use Edit option to update the information stored by MMB otherwise MMB will not work for the said blog and show you a error like shown below when you try to manage it.
Ok now that everything is setup and ready to use, you can now do one of these things, view the latest posts from your external blog, write a draft to your external blog, edit a post from your external blog, delete a post from your external blog, write a new post to your external blog and more. It’s just like a mini WordPress for your WordPress.
Well if you are a WordPress user no need of explaining this, the write post for the external blog will turn up just like your regular write post page, so you can write a post to your other blog(s). In addition to this you can also Edit a post or delete it using MMB.
Once you have started editing a blog you also get a quick menu to easily navigate between multiple blogs. Actions are determined by your roles on the external blog, so if you are a contributor you will see options to write a post and view recent posts. If you are an admin you will see options to write a post, manage categories, view latest posts, edit posts, delete posts, manage comments etc.

Managing Posts
With MMB you can edit all the posts you have added recently, including your drafts. You can also save a draft to your external blog or simply publish it. The writing experience will be the same, only difference will be that you are writing from another blog.
What About Pages?
Well I did not add that feature because you write pages once in a while, but a post maybe 10 times a day. The next version will have an option to write pages.
And Categories?
Hmmmmm, lets see will you be able to add a category to your external blog? The answer is yes using MMB you will be able to do this using the add categories on your external blog, you will not be able to delete the categories.
Managing Comments
Just like Better Comments Manager Manage Multiple Blogs features a comments Editor which allows you to manage comments from your external blog subject to you installing the Manage Multiple Blog RPC for comments plugin on your external blog.
The default WordPress installation does not have features to allow you to manage comments remotely, so this plugin adds those missing features to it. You can approve, disapprove, spam a comment or delete it in addition to replying to a comment and editing it :-).

If you do not have the plugin installed on your external blog you will see a error like this
What about updates?
Manage Multiple Blogs will be continuously upgraded for the next few weeks, in order for you to know how and when update happens MMB plugin features a update checker. You will see your current version as well as the version available from the server on the top right hand corner of your WordPress page below the menu.

When and update is available you will be shown a message in bold red text so that you can update your MMB version, rest assured I am working on saving your efforts on updating the software and it should update itself in future versions, of course with your permissions only.

Why the efforts?
You may be wondering why I did this even when there are so many desktop tools that does the same thing?
Well two things your desktop does not always go with you where you go, the web does. So using this plugin you can always manage all your blogs from one place. You may ask that I can always login to all my blogs and do this without your plugin, well that’s true but I am trying to save you those efforts of having to do that by just logging into a single blog.
Reason two no one till date including desktop software’s have the feature for you to manage comments on a external blog, only MMB has that feature. It is the one most unique feature on the WordPress planet for managing external blogs.
Let me add three too, I love WordPress and this is not the end of my development of plugins for it, I am coming up with more exciting stuff soon.

Nice Plugin! I will try it now and will prompt you the bug if I found some. Good work, Keith!
Hey Ken, glad you liked it.
Any problems using it with WP2.3?
Can it be used with tagging, either WP2.3 or with UTW and the plugin from Circlesix.com ?
It seems like it might be a solution to run it with XAMPP to have better response.
Hi Andy,
I have not tested this with the latest version of WP2.3 and I am working on adding the tagging features to it.
Keith
Great work Keith! I’m downloading it.
nice work ! thank you for creating and GPL it.
i tried but getting following error,
The Blog url you have provided does not exist. Please re-check and see if it exists. If you have booked the domain within last few hours we may not be able to access it. We currently only support Wordpress 2.0 and aboveYour blog should have a file called xmlrpc.php in the root directory, if its missing please install the latest Wordpress version.
I have old domain and WP 2.x version. but i install 2 Wordpress in one doamin/host…like one is in root(/)blog and another is /news/blog. i tried to install this plugin in root(/) Wordpress and tried to make /news/ as external blog but it’s not working.
Hi Keith,
Looks great. I will give it a good workout and let you know.
What I really need is a plugin that will allow me to create a new user with author permissions across a number of external blogs. One signup for many blogs. Any ideas?
Rick
I meant to check off “Notify me of followup…”
Tried it out and seems to be nice. I would love it if it had a dashboard with “Latest Activity” from all the sites rolled up in one screen. Like incoming links, latest comments, etc… Would be nice to have one page to kind of monitor activity on the sites then branch off to managing them from there… Great start with this plugin and I will definitely use it at knupNET.com
screenshots looks awesome. should give it a try later - when i have multiple blogs that is.
Wow. Great plug-in. Everyone will benefit from your hard work. Thanks.
Hi Keith,
I found out your website by accident. I was in shock when I saw what you’ve done, and for what you are offering (especially when I saw the price which obviously, it’s FREE !!)… I have personally seen some software/plugins/script like this being sold for about $97 ++ . How kind are you to release that as a free product ! People have to get to know about this useful tool, and yet not many people have downloaded it (as seen in the download counter)
Another thing, I like your ‘comment preview’ feature. it is wonderful ! I wonder if this would be included into your MMB or MMB comment RPC plugin?
Even though I have not yet download your plugins for my own use, and I don’t have multiple blogs, it is good to keep an eye on this plug in , in my opinion.. I then tried to click on the Chipin button, wanted to offer some donation, but wasn’t able to do so. Can you please fix that so that I can donate or BUY YOU A BEER ?
Let me know (email me) when you have got that fixed. I will donate as soon as possible.
All the best to you.
Aiden Chong
Great plugin
Would be useful if it could display the version of the external blogs and list the plugins installed, so we can check they are up to date!
What would also be great is integration with other plugins, for example your own Automatic Upgrade would be great!
i get the following error

Please help me…..
DONE! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR PLUGIN! “NICE WORDS THAN ACTIONS”
I GOT THIS MESSAGE:
“Oopsy Dooopsy!!!! Some how we figured out you do not have write permissoins to the blog you are trying to add. You cannot do anything on the external blog so we do not see any point in adding the external blog to this blog as our limitations (Pssst: WordPress limitations led us to this) permit us from doing so. You can check with the site owner for the permissions to be able to write to their blog before we can add it here”
I USE CORRECT USERNAME/PASSWORD/URL, BUT NO SUCCESS! GOOD LUCK TO YOU…
I get the exact same error message as Afiq. I´m running out of ideas…
I have upgraded both blogs to 2.3.3.
I´ve tried with so many different combinations already, but what are the limitation permits? Where can I change them?
Is it a prob that I have the same login name and password on both blogs?
This plugin doesn’t work for me at all in Wordpress 2.3.3. It screws up the visual editor, and when you disable it in your user profile, this plugin forces the visual editor to display anyway. I know for a fact that this plugin does that since the second you disable it the problem goes away. I don’t know if this is a conflict with another plugin or what, but until that problem is fixed I won’t be able to use it.
as previous comment, I get same error when I attempt toinstall any of three blogs I manage
any help for this?

This is something I really like-especially if it worked for Myspace-but even as it is I’m looking forward to using it. I keep hearing about this Google dual content on the web problem-but then I hear its a rumor. So for now I’m going for it!
I’ve had no luck making this plugin work at all in wordpress 2.3.3+. Also duplicate content is very real and no rumour - google it.
Very nice plugin, I’ll have a try.Thanks.
I’ll have to try it. Thanks
