Microsoft has officially announced at today’s Windows Phone Summit that there are over 100,000 apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Earlier this month some sites were reporting that the milestone had been reached, but Microsoft were quick to come out and say that this wasn’t the case, going on to state that they will let us know what it happens.
Well, it happened. Microsoft also proudly touted that they managed to reach this milestone faster than Android.
AllAboutWindowsPhone, who prematurely reported on the Marketplace reaching 100,000 apps earlier this month noted that it took Android 24 months and iOS 16 months to reach the 100k app milestone, while it only took 20 months for Windows Phone. However, app count isn’t everything. Even if Windows Phone has a million apps in the Marketplace, so long as popular apps such as Instagram are not on the platform, users will continue to stick to iPhone and Android.
Microsoft realizes this, of course, and also had a few announcements regarding popular apps today: Audible has hit the Windows Phone Marketplace, official Chase and PayPal are in the pipeline, and popular Zynga games Words with Friends and Draw Something will be coming to Windows Phone later this year.
