Nokia has launched Lumia 610 in India extending the Lumia range to new price points. Available in four different bright colors, the device is priced at INR 12,999. With the Lumia 710 available at a little over 14K in the market, the price is a tad high, but I’ll expect the street price to drop a little with broader availability.
“The Nokia Lumia 610 will introduce Windows Phone to a new generation of smartphone users.”
Vipul Mehrotra, Director – Smart Devices, Nokia India
The phone has a very nice finish to it, and the finely beveled metallic edges and the overall design makes it a great phone aesthetically at its price-point. It runs the latest version of Windows Phone 7.5, with the Tango update that is, and is pre-loaded with Nokia’s signature apps – Nokia Maps, Nokia Transport, and Nokia Drive. Nokia Transport tracks public transportation in more than 430 cities worldwide (11 cities in India) while Nokia Maps is a very useful app for Indian customers since Bing Maps don’t work that great here as well as they do in the US and few other countries.
Nokia also announced a few unique features and experiences such as Nokia Music with Mix Radio, Creative Studio, Camera Extras, and WiFi tethering. Mix Radio is a great addition to the Lumia series, and I’d consider it a great marketing proposition (if Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive weren’t as yet). It is the only free mobile music-streaming service in India and allows for offline listening as well. The mixes include locally-relevant music mixes from more than 40 lakh tracks across music genres.
These experiences would be available across the Lumio portfolio and would be rolled out to the existing Lumia owners by the end of July. Nokia also hinted that the launch of Nokia Lumia 900 in India is on track and they would announce it within the current quarter.
I managed to get my hands on a Nokia Lumia 610, and made a quick and dirty video with it.
