How to Install Zune Software on Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Server 2008 R2The Zune software works only on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. However, some tinkering around, and you’ll be able to install the Zune software on Windows Server 2008 R2.

We can install Zune software from the MSI file directly. Make sure you have Desktop Experience Feature installed. The usual disclaimer apply ofcourse! No guarantees, and unsupported.

  • Download the Zune software setup package.  Run the following command to extract the content of package.  It’ll ask you for the location to put the extracted files.
    • ZuneSetupPkg.exe /x
  • Navigate to the folder where you extracted the setup package. In the x64packages (or x86packages), find Zune-x64.msi, and double-click to install.
  • Double click on zunewmdu-x64.msi to install it.

Voila! You can now run the Zune software, log on, and also update it manually or via Windows Update.
