Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala from Ubuntu 9.04

Upgrading to Ubuntu(9.10) Karmic Koala from the Jaunty Jackalope(9.04) build is pretty easy. Ubuntu having a 6 month release cycle has been very wise to provide an easy upgrade option.

This guide will let users upgrade to Ubuntu Karmic Koala using the GUI provided for distribution upgrades which can be accessed at:

System > Administration > Update Manager. This upgrade needs root privileges.

You will get a window informing about the availability of the version 9.10. Click on upgrade.

Go through the release notes to know about changes. Click on Upgrade again when done.

Next, the files needed for the upgrade are fetched.

After the files are successfully fetched, you are prompted to start the upgrade process. The upgrade takes quite some time depending on the number of packages you are using and whether you update regularly.

Once the updates are installed and the distro version is upgraded, you are prompted to restart your system. After a restart, you will see the version 9.10 as your version number.

    Upgrade took all night, computer now takes longer to boot!

    Don’t waste yout time on this upgrade.

      I’ve tried the update also. Pretty easy indeed. Didn’t take me long to update at all!

      But I also got a longer boottime like Ace. :-(

      Starting my desktop I discovered that my harddrive was still formatted ext3, while 9.10 should be ext4! (When you updrade your harddrive doesn’t get formatted again, but it will if you install Ubuntu freshly.)

      So then I installed 9.10 from scratch.

      That worked!

        With “I’ve tried the update also” I of course meant I’ve tried the upGRADE also.

        Think something went haywire with my ISO download, looks like everything is there but it won’t install or play in the demo mode. Thought I would just go online and order a copy but since I have done that with a prior version they said they can’t send me one due do demand. I think this means alot of people are in the same boat. Guess I will have to try downloading the ISO again and hope for the best. Lesson to self NEVER jump on the first day bandwagon again!!!

    Upgrade didn’t work. Failed – downloading ISO to try a fresh install. Its a shame.

      There was probably a connection snap, and some files required for the upgrade went missing. Hope the download works.

    Just started the upgrade last night, and finished it this morning, now, after booting, I get only graphic garbage on the screen, and an unusable system. I’ll be backing up the last few days worth of files that aren’t yet in my backup set, wiping the drive, and going back to what worked before I tried this upgrade. I’ve said a few unkind things about Ubuntu this morning, as it looks like I’m going to waste a day getting things back the way they were yesterday before this upgrade killed my OS

    Disaster! I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. Now my computer boots to a blank screen. I had to go into grub and boot to an older kernel version 2.6.28-16-generic, instead of 2.6.31-14-generic, to get booted. Once booted I have no audio, and my system runs like molasses. Luckily, I still have Internet access so am able to get to Ubuntu forums, where I am searching for fixes to the various problems. About 6 hours of searching, so far, and nothing I have tried works. Beware!

    use a fresh install to get ext4 filesystem and encrypted home, everything works as it should, pity about the upgrade, took to long on upgrade, i found its quicker to d/l the full install version, and you have a disk to recover from too

    excellent OS , everthing just works, big leap forward from 9.04 now on ASUS G1SN laptop with NVIDIA GPU, and Atom 330 both 64bit

    BBC I player now works with adobe flash for 64 alpha

    TBF it rocks, XP runs sweet in virtual box, and “crossover” for MS office works, will decide later whether to dump crossover and stay with virtualisation , no dual booting any more

      The upgrade has a known issue. I would recommend a fresh installation as it takes almost the same time downloading and installing.

    Follow the instruction to upgrade and it stopped in the middle complaining swap space not found. Do not upgrade if you don’t have to!!!

    i’ve got 9.04 installed via wubi on a vista laptop. upgrade took about 25mins. initial bootup was a little slow. sound issue fixed (now through speakers and not just headphone socket!).

    maybe still ext3 (haven’t checked, but not bothered anyway)

    happy.

    I do not have working internet after the upgrade. I'm really pissed. And I have no idea what to do. It's *broken*.
