What You Need to Know About Moving From Feedburner to Google Accounts

Just recently we wrote about how we faced problems [1] while moving our Feed subscribers account from Feedburner to a Google Account, but that should not stop you from moving, since one day you will be forced migrated and that would not give you to time to transfer all your feeds to the new account.

Here is what you should know about moving your Feedburner account to a Google Account.

Step 1: Email Google Support With a Request

To migrate your FeedBurner account to a Google account you will have to send a email to adsense-support-aff@google.com providing them with the following information:

  • Your FeedBurner account username
  • The Google Account email address you use to sign in to AdSense

Once you have done that, expect at-least a day for Google to respond back to you, with a account migration response.

Step 2: Change your Feed Subscription Links

With the move to your old accounts the old http://feeds.feedburner.com/yourfeed will still be valid but it is highly recommended that you move all your feed subscriptions URLs to http://feedproxy.google.com/yourfeed, this is because eventually the feedburner URL will die out in future creating problems for you.

Step 3: My Brands DNS Changes

This should be step 2 but many users don’t use MyBrand for feeds. With the move to a new server, Google would require a DNS change to the MyBrand service where Feedburner allowed users to use personal URLs. If you are using MyBrand, you will have to change the CNAME account for feedsor whatever alias you have been using to ghs.google.com.the period at end is required by most of the servers, so do not ignore it, our own server has had problem with the CName record, and we are yet to hear from Google support.

Things You Need to Question With This Move?

Though many users may feel moving from Feedburner to Google a secure move, there are still several questions to be answered, like;

How do we handle Email Subscribers?
Why does the awareness API not work? Is it because, it’s hosted on Feedburner? When will that change happen?
Is there a new URL we need them to use? If so where is it?
Is Google only concerned about feed reading subscribers?

Though there are several questions about moving to Google accounts, we still urge you to move rather than being forced to move, have fun along the way.
