For those who do not wish to read it, Wine is an application which lets you run the windows API libraries on Linux, basically allowing most general purpose Windows applications to run inside of Linux in the Wine environment.

Wine recently got it’s new development release out. With Wine 1.1.29, we have:

  • Improved Gecko integration, by using  Wine’s network layers.
  • Use of external libmpg123 for mp3 decoding.
  • Better handling of Internet proxy settings.
  • Better support for jpeg and png formats.
  • Fixes on some game installers not working with Wine.
  • Fixes on the UI, showing wrong buttons and poor layout at places.
  • Fixed 64 bit Wine installer.

With all these fixes and improvements, Wine is surely on a define path to improvement. This brings good news to many other projects which are completely built on Wine, like Cedega from Trans Gaming which although commercial, uses Wine for it’s base to run windows games on Linux with full graphics support.

All is Green Here – New Gmail and Chrome Grass Themes

I’ve gone green. I don’t know how it happened. I don’t recycle much and I don’t ride a bicycle to work. I don’t even care much for the green grass in my yard, especially when it’s time for mowing. But I sure like looking at it on my laptop PC.

When I heard Gmail had added 4 new themes, I checked them out and found the Grass Theme. Once I picked that out, I remembered that my Google Chrome browser already has a grass theme. Here’s what it looks like now when I check my email.

gmail.grass.theme

Now with all that grass growing in my web browser, you’d think I’d be happy to stop there. No, I didn’t. I went right out and grabbed a few grass wallpapers and now my desktop needs to be mowed.

I hope this hasn’t made you green with envy. Worse yet, you could have gotten a little green around the gillsif you have allergies. If so, I’m sorry about that. In any case, have a good day and play it safe out there.

How to Enable DreamScene in Windows 7

DreamScene was a Windows Vista Ultimate extra which allowed users to have animated (video) wallpapers. In a way it was a dream come true for any users who wished to have a more dynamic desktop. Unfortunately, Microsoft dumped this feature in Windows 7 in favour of Desktop Slideshow. However, with a little bit of effort you can use DreamScene even on Windows Seven.

  • Before getting started make sure you have Aero turned on. The quickest way to enable Aero is to select any Aero theme from the Personalize options.
  • Download the Windows 7 Dreamscene patch (32 bit only) from here. Start the installer (you will need administrator privileges).

DreamScene in Windows 7

  • Wait for the patch to finish. Once it is done, Explorer will automatically be restarted and you will get an option to set any supported video (WMV or MPG) as Desktop Background from the right click context menu.

That’s it! It was really as simple as that.

Prevent/Fix Operation Aborted Errors In IE

internet_explorer_operation_aborted

The screenshot above is the worst nightmare of any webmaster, it relates to improper JavaScript coding that prevents your site from loading in Internet Explorer.

And considering the Sitemeter debacle quite sometime back, which prevented users from visiting the site running sitemeter code because of a problem in their JavaScript code, it can be pretty annoying as you are still losing traffic for no fault of yours.

Many might say it is IE’s fault as other browsers handle JavaScript errors pretty well, however that is how it handles things, so we need to make sure that the JavaScript code does not have errors in the first place, I am saying this because I myself have made a mistake once and lost traffic from IE users, you can read more about that experience in my post Incomplete testing can lose you traffic.

To overcome this error, I had told you about some simple steps you can do on your end to avoid operation aborted errors, to add to that the IE blog today wrote a extensive tutorial that will help developers to avoid visitors from seeing the dreaded error on their websites.

The post is pretty detailed and talks about possible scenarios the error will occur in and the steps you can take to debug your code to track such errors.

Definitely useful considering the fact that IE still holds a considerable share in the browser market, so no matter whether you love it or hate it, you still have to code for it.

Windows Seven : Access Hidden Regional Themes

Windows Seven ships with several region specific themes and wallpapers which are hidden by default. Prior to Windows Seven installation you are asked to select the language, time and currency format. This information is used by Windows to determine which country/region you belong to.

Regional themes are available for United States, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and South Africa. Although Windows only displays the regional themes if you belong to these regions, all the themes are copied to your hard disk during installation. As a result, you can easily access these additional goodies even if you don’t belong to these countries.

Windows Seven Hidden Themes and Wallpapers

All the country specific goodies are stored at C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT (where C:\ is the Windows Seven partition). AU, CA, GB, UA and ZA are the country codes for Australia, Canada, Great Britain, United States and South Africa respectively. Open any of the sub-folders and double click on the theme files to apply them. If you are only interested in the wallpapers just copy paste them. If you are still not satisfied you can download more themes from the official Windows Seven Personalization Center.

Speed up Windows startup by delaying less important startup programs

The programs that get executed every time you boot up your computer (called startup entries) affects the speed of the startup process very badly. This situation could be managed by disabling unwanted programs and selectively enabling startup programs using any   startup manager. Here is a tip to speed up the startup even more by delaying the needed-but-less important startup programs using a very good freeware security tool for Windows, WinPatrol.

Once installed, WinPatrol will run in the background and will alert you if any change is made to the system settings, there by, preventing malwares from getting installed. What we are going to use now, is the ‘Delayed Startup’ feature of Winpatrol.

How To

  • Launch WinPatrol
  • In the “Startup Programs” tab, right click the program you want to delay and select “move to delayed start”
  • Switch to the “Delayed start” tab and you’ll find the program you just delayed in the list there.
By default, the delay value is 30 seconds, but you can set it to a maximum of 1 hour, by right-clicking the program in the list and selecting the ‘Delay start options’.

Usage Tips

  • This method could be used to delay helper/tray agents like iTunes helper, PC suite helpers of phone softwares etc.
  • DO NOT delay programs/processes related to your display, sound card, touch pad and anti-virus/firewall
  • You may weigh programs of their importance to you and then set custom delay timings so that multiple programs won’t be executed simultaneously, saving up the total system performance .
