Flock LogoFlock has recently released its public beta version of its Flock Browser which has integrated support for Flickr and inbuilt news reader and few more features, for an more extensive review on the browser you can read it at TechCrunch .

Though Flock browser is similar to Firefox, it still has an slight edge with a better look and feel to it but I am not going to start a comparision here.

I have been using Flock since it has released its developer version, but it has lacked the kind of extensions that is developed by the Mozilla community and will do for some time.

There are so many extensions I have become accustomed to with Firefox which are not avialable in Flock.

But now you can migrate your favorite Firefox extensions to Flock too.

The conversion process is quite simple and it involves three steps.

1. Find your extension you want to migrate to Flock.
2. Convert it to an Flock extension.
3. Install it in Flock.

1 and 3 are what what you will probably know by now and are probably accustomed to it with Firefox, I am going to tell you how to do the 2nd part.

For that you will not require any technical knowledge as there is a Flock'd site to convert extensions which will do this for you.

Find your extension you want to migrate to Flock

Browse or search any extension you would like to install in Flock from the Mozilla addon's site. Once you find the extension you want to use in Flock, just right click on the Install now link and click on Copy Link Location to copy the link for the extension.

Find the extensions to use

Once you have the location of the extension url copied, Step 2 will involve converting that extension for Flock usage.

Convert it to an Flock extension

To convert the extension for usage in Flock, Load the Outraged Artists Flock Extension Converter link in another window and paste the URL you copied in step 1 there, the conversion process will take a few seconds to a minute.

Install it in Flock

Once the Extension is converted to be compatible with Flock just click on the link you are provided with and it will install the same extension on the Flock browser with the same functionality you have while using the extension in Firefox.

Install Converted extension to Flock

You can also find a list of extension's already converted by other user's there including about 7 of absolute necesity which I already converted over a period of time, like Google Toolbar for firefox,  Stumble Upon, Paypal send money and some more extensions which I regulalry use.

You can Install the extensions already converted by using the install link provided along with the extension name.

There are already 280+ extensions converted for compatibility with Flock, so you can contribute more with those that have helped you and you would like to also install in Flock.

You can also check on the lists of Firefox extensions I recommend in the Related Links section at the end of the article.

Flock’d isn’t perfect, it’s actually lost compatibility with certain extensions since I’ve migrated it from a plain-text converter to an XML-based one (some extensions that are written in a certain format will definately not work, but I’m working on it)

There are many more uses for Flock’d though… it also adds compatibility for not just Flock, but with Bon Echo and Netscape 8.x. I’ve completely released the whole thing as GPL on sourceforge, though since I can’t get SVN to work properly, that source is a little dated.
