Why You Couldn’t Block Mark Zuckersberg on Facebook or Anyone for that Sake if it is done en Masse

Facebook users were quite annoyed a few days ago when they discovered that they cannot block Mark Zuckersberg. They speculated that it was a mechanism deliberately put into Facebook so that no-one could block Zuckersberg. As it turns out, this is not the case and Mashable has received a clarification from Facebook on this.

The response from Facebook says,

This error isn’t specific to any one account. It’s generated when a person has been blocked a certain large number of times. In very rare instances, a viral campaign will develop instructing lots of people to all wrongly block the same person. The purpose of this system is to protect the experience for people targeted by these campaigns. We’re constantly working to improve our systems and are taking a closer look at this one.

Clearly, it is a mechanism to save people from personalities being hit by viral blocking campaigns. The whole matter fired up when a website  Block Zuck launched a  campaign to block Zuckersberg.

This feature in Facebook was not seen or heard of until now. However, with Facebook’s shady methodology, it is not clear as to which came first. The mass-block protection feature or the blocking mechanism?

Intel Launches Dual Core Atom N550 For Netbooks

Intel Atom N550Intel has launched the new dual core Atom N550 processor for netbooks. It has a clock speed of 1.5 GHz and is the first dual core Atom.

The netbook space hasn’t been seeing a lot of action lately; almost all major netbook manufacturers like Asus, MSI and Samsung are now planning to launch their own tablets. Tablets are now the next big thing.

However, netbooks may have a chance to regain their lost glory. Today, Intel announced the new Intel Atom N550 dual core processor. This is the first dual core Atom processor and is based on the new Pineview architecture. It has a clock speed of 1.5 GHz and an L2 cache of 2 x 512 KB. It supports DDR3 800 MHz RAM and offers battery life similar to the Atom N450, with much better performance.

Most netbook users have always lamented about the slow performance in netbooks; the Atom N550 will probably change that. It was reviewed by a few hardware sites back in June and performed very well in the benchmarks. It improves the multitasking capabilities and offers improved application and graphics performance. It can also handle 720p video flawlessly and is perfect for watching high resolution Youtube and Hulu videos.

Intel also announced that netbooks based on the Atom N550 will be launched by Acer, ASUS, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, MSI, and Toshiba by the end of 2010.

Demon ISP in UK wants to Prioritize Gaming Traffic

Demon is a popular ISP in the UK and has recently released a broadband plan that prioritizes gaming. The most important requirement for gamers is a low latency with the server and less congestion. The latest broadband plan from Demon ISP is exclusively planning to serve these two requirements and is an attractive plan for all games at the same time.

However, this plan will prioritize part of the traffic for gamers, which raises some considerable Net Neutrality issues. To this, Demon says that it has allowed this usage seeing that most of the Demon network is active in the morning during business hours and it is allowing this usage only in the evening.

Apart from this, the specs of the connection is advertised as low latency and ping time, 24 hours UK based support with 20 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speed. The only limit is a 100 GB upper cap on usage between 8 AM and 11 PM. In whole, the gamer pack costs £23 a month.

Warner has taken this decision after taking a survey of many gamers who complaint that those nearer to the exchange got an unfair advantage in the game due to their broadband and connection speed. Hence, this is a deciding factor in a game.

It is good to see that an ISP cares so much for specifications in the UK whereas in countries like India, broadband is still selling under highly shady details with unmentioned upper caps on usage and poor connection using shared networks.

Cameron Diaz is the Sweet Spot in Malware Baits

Cameron Diaz is the top favorite celebrity on the Internet when it comes to malware. Security company McAfee recently conducted a study in which, Cameron Diaz turned out to be the name associated with malware at large. It is a hot favorite for attracting traffic and the success rate, as projected by McAfee is a whooping one in ten when considering search results.

The search result was tested for the term “Cameron Diaz and screensavers”. McAfee researched the results returned for the names of celebrities, politicians and numerous other famous personalities. The data was estimated by comparing stats from McAfee SiteAdvisor against a search term.

SiteAdvisor provides content advice for websites like presence of malware. The earlier record was held by Jessica Biel who dropped to third place this year. Julia Roberts took second place while Brad Pitt, at 10th position was the first man. As evident from this, men are more  susceptible  to getting affected by malware.

The news of  McAfee being acquired by Intel gained pace recently and you can get more on it from this earlier coverage. With this acquisition, Intel is not only acquiring a security firm but also a huge data powerhouse in the form of the SiteAdvisor. Let us see what Intel cooks up with McAfee.

Gmail “Undo Send” Duration Now Up to 30 Seconds

Gmail Labs

Gmail has a nifty little feature called “Undo Send” in Gmail Labs which allows you to unsend emails after you have sent them. You could unsend emails for up to 5 seconds until now, as Gmail delayed the emails for 5 seconds before it actually sent them. This gave Gmail an easy way to handle the huge email traffic flowing through its servers and also provided a nice feature to its users. It has helped me a lot of times by allowing me to unsend my emails and correct them in case there were any mistakes.

Google now allows you to dial the delay duration up to 30 seconds. You can change the “Send Cancellation Period” to 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds by visiting Gmail > Settings > General > Undo Send.

Apple Seeks to Patent Kill Switch for Jailbroken iPhones

Apple
Apple has applied for a new patent which covers a series of measures to protect iPhone users from thieves and unauthorized users. Using the technology in the patent titled “Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorized Users of an Electronic Device”, Apple can identify users based on their images, voice recording and even their unique heartbeat patterns. If any of these don’t match, the user can be flagged as an unauthorized user and the iPhone’s camera can be activated, the captured images can be geotagged and sent to a remote server. It can also log keystrokes and phone calls and send it back to the remote server.

All the sensitive data of the user can also be backed up to a remote server and then deleted remotely, once unauthorized access is detected.

What’s alarming about the patent is that some of the methods it uses to identify unauthorized access include hacking, jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone. Jailbreaking the iPhone allows you to gain full access to the file system and run any code you want, as opposed to apps approved by Apple only. Using the technology described in the patent, Apple could automatically disable jailbroken or unlocked iPhones citing unauthorized usage.

Jailbreaking and Unlocking were recently declared to be legal by the regulators in the United States.

Google Testing Real Time Search Results as You Type

Google has been experimenting with search results in the past, and they continue to run several more tests to enhance the search experience for the user. Earlier this year, Google had launched real-time search where they displayed real-time results from .

However, they are now taking the real-time search to another level by displaying search results as you type in letters in the search box. Real time search results are displayed when you type in characters into the search box, they continue to change as you type in more characters or use the autocomplete feature.

The new real-time search results as you type was discovered by a SEO consultant Rob Ousbey and posted on his blog, which you can find here. Here is a video of the real-time search results as you type in action below.
