Mininova Deletes Illegal Torrents, Goes Legal

Mininova.org [1], one of the biggest and most popular torrent services has just lost a battle in court. As a result, they are deleting a large number of torrents from their servers that they don’t have rights to distribute.

As this [2] blog entry explains, Mininova is limiting itself to Content Distribution Service. It means, they can only distribute the content for which they have distribution rights and all the other stuff just goes out the window. There is no specific information of how many torrents would be deleted but speculation is that it will be in tens of thousands.

This is a sad day for thousands of users who get most of their content such as music and movies through torrents. Do you think the same would happen to other torrent sites as well? What are some of the alternates now?
