How do I update my Firefox?
By on May 30th, 2007

Update: In newer versions of Firefox, from the Help menu click on the “Check for Updates” option to download the latest update for Firefox. The options below will continue updating you when there is a new update available.

Following up on reader queries, another one of my readers has a doubt which needs to be solved. Here is a simple solution for the problem.

Reader Question: I have been using Firefox for 3 months but do not know how to update it, can you tell me how do I update my Firefox browser?

Hi Javine,

Firefox has a in built feature that allows you to update the browser whenever a new version is released. To do that you have to follow few simple steps so that you are alerted of new updates in future.

The first step involves you going to to the Tools -> Options submenu as shown in the screenshot;

Choose firefox options from tools menu

Once you have done that a new window will popup showing you various options, in that you will see various buttons. From the buttons choose the advanced button option you will see a screen that is something like this.

A additional note that you will not see all the buttons which is displayed in the screenshot as few buttons have been added using plugins that I use. Once you have selected the advance option move to the update sub tab which can be seen in the advanced option.

Firefox Advanced Options

You will see a new option menu with details on what you should upgrade within Firefox. I will explain the options so that you can easily choose the one’s you want, check the screenshot below to have a look at what the options are;

Firefox update advaned menu options

In the above picture you will se options to Automatically check for updates for Firefox, Installed Add-ons and Search Engines. The second option allows you to choose whether Firefox should automatically download the available updates or ask you whether you want to download it.

First of all to be sure that you are not running any pirated versions of Firefox always download your software from http://www.getfirefox.com or http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/.

To automatically update your Firefox browser you will have to choose the option as shown in the screenshot above. Doing so will authorize the Firefox software to look for updates and download it whenever it is available.

You may also choose the first option so that you can be alerted when any new update is available. Using this option will allow you to choose whether or not you want to install the available updates.

I hope this answers your query and helps you in keeping your software updated without concerns.

If you are new and want an answer you are always welcome to contact me with your queries. Techie Buzz will be glad to answer any of your questions.
