Rumor: Google Buys Groupon For $2.5 Billion
By on November 29th, 2010

According to a post published on a blog called VatorNews, Google has already bought Groupon for $2.5 billion. Rumors of a Groupon buyout by Google have been circulating since quite some time now, and the expected acquisition price was also in the range of $2 billion to $3 billion.

While we cannot comment on the credibility of the source, VatorNews claims that an unnamed insider that is a reliable source confirms the acquisition. No other details about the rumored acquisition are out yet, but the news could definitely be true. Both Google and Groupon haven’t commented on the news yet, but we should know for sure by Monday morning.

A major issue with the acquisition would be getting it approved by the regulators. Google has been quite aggressive with the pots of cash that the Adsense keeps generating. It recently bought Admob for $750 million, and ITA Software for $700 million. The Groupon deal, if true, would be its biggest buy since Doubleclick ($3.1 billion) in 2007.
