Apple Already Testing Next Generation iPhone?

The news [1] comes from an iPhone developer Pandav [2] who spotted usage records from an unknown/unreleased iPhone model. The app being used is iBart which is a public transportation guide for the San Francisco area.

It is being referred to as iPhone 3,1 since references to it were found in some firmware files back in August. The news looks pretty convincing because of two reasons:

  • Before Apple released the iPhone 3GS there were referrals to an iPhone 2,1.
  • iPhone 2,1 was similarly tested in and around the San Francisco bay area.

There are no details yet about features of the upcoming iPhone, but speculations include a video camera [3], a multi-core processor [4] and Verizon compatibility.
