Sony Ericsson rolled out the Android 2.1 Éclair update for the Xperia X10, X10 Mini and the Mini Pro back in November last year.
Now, nearly 6 months later, AT&T and Sony Ericsson have finally started rolling out the Android 2.1 update for the AT&T branded X10’s in the United States. Along with the bump in the Android OS version, X10 owners will also get 720p HD video recording, dual-touch support, increased home screens, face detection in video recording and continuous autofocus.
The Sony Ericsson Product Blog states that they couldn’t be more excitedabout releasing this update to the end user. I wonder what are they so excited about. All the popular handsets from HTC and Samsung are receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, and Sony Ericsson is getting excited on releasing the obsolete Android 2.1 update for the X10.
However, X10 owners in the United States should not blame Sony Ericsson for this. AT&T is the reason behind this delay in the Android 2.1 update. Also, thanks to AT&T, X10 owners in the United States will never get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update which Sony Ericsson will release sometime in Q3 of this year.
X10 owners in the U.S. should head over to this link to get the update for their handset.
Along with the Xperia Arc and Play, Sony Ericsson has started rolling out a new firmware update for the older generation Xperia branded handsets the X10. Apparently, the update is also being rolled out to the Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro and the X8.
The new firmware update does not bring any major changes, and nor is it the anticipated Android 2.3 update for the X10. The update is basically aimed at improving the general system performance and stability.
X10 users over at XDA who have updated their phone to the latest firmware (2.1.B.0.1) report performance improvements, smoother operation, and improvements in camera image quality as well. The Timescape app is also much smoother now. The firmware update also includes a new baseband, so users should expect an increase in network reception along with higher data transfer speeds.
The new firmware is also root able, so users don’t need to worry about losing root access to the system partitions. At the moment, the firmware update is being rolled out only in Germany. Expect this firmware update to roll out in more regions of the world beginning from tomorrow.
Yesterday, Motorola and Verizon announced the Droid X2. Today, Verizon and Sony Ericsson have teamed up to announce the Xperia Play. The Xperia Play is already available in various regions of the world, and will be available in the U.S from this month’s end.
The Xperia Play sports a 4-inch TFT display with FWVGA (854×480) resolution. The handset is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, and an Adreno 205 GPU. The handset also packs 512MB of RAM and ROM.
The handset will run on Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread with Sony Ericsson’s proprietary UI running on top of it. The back of the phone sports a 5MP camera, while there is a VGA camera in the front for video calling. Since the Play does NOT run on Android 2.3.4, users cannot video chat using Google Talk.
The Xperia Play will be the first PlayStation Certified smartphone to be available in the U.S. Being a gamer oriented phone, the handset will ship with 7 games on-board including Asphalt 6, Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, The Sims, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot and Tetris. Users can download more than 50 high-quality games from Verizon’s VCast Apps.
The Xperia Play can already be ordered online at VerizonWireless.com, while it will hit the retail stores on May 26th. The handset will set users back by $199.99, on a two-year contract.
Sony Ericsson has just announced the Xperia Mini and the Xperia Min Pro, at their on-going event in London. The Xperia Mini is the smallest phone ever to record videos in HD 720p resolution.
The Xperia Mini features a 3-inch HVGA (320×480) screen with BRAVIA display engine. The handset is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, and packs 512MB of RAM.
The back of the Mini sports a 5MP camera with Auto-Focus and LED flash, which is capable of recording videos in 720p HD resolution. The usual arrays of features and sensors GPS with A-GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, FM Radio, Accelerometer, eCompass, and a 3.5mm audio port are also present. Sony Ericsson claims that the battery life of the Mini is up to 30% better than its predecessor the X10 Mini.
The Xperia Mini Pro is exactly like the Xperia Mini, except that it sports a side slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The handset is labeled as a Compact QWERTY messenger’ from Sony Ericsson.
Both the handsets run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with Sony Ericsson’s proprietary UI on top of it. The company has also revised the four corner UI menu, originally found in the Xperia X10 Mini/Mini Pro.
The Mini/Mini Pro will be available in a bunch of colors including blue, dark pink, white and black. The handset will be available in retail stores all over the world by August. Here is the link to the press release.
Unfortunately, we could only pick one winner and that saddened us. However, don’t worry. Our 5th birthday is coming up soon and we will definitely have a Birthday Bash and giveaway huge prizes to our readers.
Coming back to the contest, I want to personally thank the folks at Sony Ericsson India and their PR team including Vasundhara and Deepanshi to help us set up the contest and award a lucky winner with a free Xperia Arc.
We had a tough time picking the winner and did a random spin using random.org to pick the winner after using some criteria to sort out the best entries for the contest and picking all the users who had answered all three questions. And the winner is…
Congrats Vikisha on winning yourself a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. We hope you have fun with the phone and click a lot of photographs. So this is the end of the contest, but wait there is more. We are always in a generous mood. We will be giving away either a memory card (mobile) or a headset to the 5 people who came in between number 2 and 6. Isn’t that great .

Before the advent of Android and iOS world dominance, Sony Ericsson was popular among the general users for its Walkman and Cybershot range of handsets.
When Android started gaining ground, Sony Ericsson started focusing on its Android powered handsets available the Xperia brand. The company still released some Walkman branded phones, but there were below par.
Today, Sony Ericsson is going to change all that with the release of its first Android powered Walkman phone the W8. The W8 is similar to the Xperia X8, except for some fancy colors and the Walkman logo.
The W8 features a 3-inch touch-screen display with HVGA (320×480) resolution. The phone is powered by a 600 MHz processor, and packs 168MB of RAM. The back of the phone sports a 3.2MP camera.
Sadly, the W8 will run Android 2.1 Éclair which is downright disappointing! I highly doubt Sony Ericsson will treat this handset with some Froyo or Gingerbread love. The specs of the handset are nothing to write home about, but hopefully the audio quality of the handset will make up for it.
The Sony Ericsson Walkman W8 will be available in India, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and some other regions of the world by Q2 of 2011, in a bunch of colors. Here is the official product page of the W8.
It was just a few days ago, that Sony Ericsson released details on how to unlock the Xperia Arc, Play and Neo handsets boot loader.
Now, in just a matter of days the talented developers over at XDA forums have managed to get root access on all the above said handsets.
The method to get root access is a pretty simple one Users first need to unlock their boot loader, and then flash some required files using fast boot. However, at the moment this method works only on the UK firmware of the Arc and the Play.
The developers behind gaining the root access Bin4ry and zdzihu are already working on rooting the global firmware.
Xperia Neo and Arc owners should head over to this thread, while Play owners should head over to this thread for the required steps and file.
Hopefully, Sony Ericsson will soon release the Android 2.3 Gingerbread source for the the latest bunch of the Xperia handsets. This will help the developers in cooking custom ROMs for the Xperia Arc, Neo and Play.
