The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, or the Playstation phone, has been one of the most awaited Android smartphones in the past few months. Ever since it was first leaked, it had the entire Android community excited.
We did get to know the exact hardware specs and other details a few weeks back, just after CES 2011 ended. Now, we have a leaked commercial for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, thanks to DroidNYTT. It features an Android robot undergoing surgery in a shady alley to get a pair of thumbs, presumably to use the gaming controls on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Not the best ad we have seen, but definitely cool.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play comes with a 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. It has a 1 GHz CPU and 512 MB RAM with an Adreno 205 GPU. It will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will come with exclusive games designed specifically for the Xperia Play. It is quite similar to the PSP Go in terms of design and form factor.
It will be unveiled officially by Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress at February 2011. The exact launch and pricing details will be available then.

We’ve already had quite a few leaks related to the Xperia Play, and we now have the complete list of hardware specs as well as some benchmark performance numbers of the Xperia Play. We have also seen it in images, and now thanks to BGR, we also have two videos of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play in action. It seems to be a final production prototype and from the videos, the Xperia Play seems to be a definite hit.
Check out these two videos of the Xperia Play in action:
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the Playstation phone, comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a custom UI shell by Sony Ericsson and will be powered by a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. It has an Adreno 205 GPU and comes with a 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. It has a sliding joystick instead of a keyboard which resembles the PSP Go and has performed quite well on the Quadrant and Neocore benchmarks. It will have an exclusive library of PSP games and will also support the Android Market apps and games.
The PlayStation Phone from Sony Ericsson is already one of the most anticipated handsets of 2011. We also know that Sony Ericsson will be launching the Anzu/X12 next year. However, the guys over at Blog Of Mobile, have managed to get their hands on leaked pictures of a never seen before Sony Ericsson handset. Along with this, they have also found tons of images shot from the phone and the phone seems to be sporting an 8MP camera.
From the leaked picture shown above, it is clearly visible that the microUSB connector and the 3.5mm jack are located at the top on this mysterious handset. The handset also sports a very large front facing camera, possibly for HD video calls. The handset also seems to be running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Sony’s Mediascape UI on top of it. The company will be announcing a slew of new Android handsets at the upcoming MWC (Mobile World Congress) in 2011.
Earlier, Sony announced that they aim of becoming the largest Android handset manufacturer in 2011. Looking at the current state of Android offerings from Sony – the Xperia X10 family all I can say is that the company needs to come up with some really good Android handsets to backup its statement.
