Xperia P Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Firmware Leaks

Last month an Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean based ROM had leaked for the Xperia S. This month, the Xperia P joins the list with a JB base firmware leaking for the handset.

Like the Xperia S JB firmware, the Xperia P JB firmware is not good enough to be used a daily driver since it lacks basic connectivity features including mobile data and Wi-Fi. However, the firmware does provide a glimpse of all the features that Sony will be bringing to the handset with the update including Clear Audio+, its new enhanced suite of Media apps (Walkman, Album etc.), slight UI refresh, updated Camera app, a new lock screen and Xloud.

Sadly, Sony won’t be bringing its Small apps feature to the Xperia P, as originally seen on the Xperia T and Xperia Z. Sony will not be updating the kernel of the Xperia P with this update as well, which might not go down well with the developers.

Even then, the Android 4.1.2 update will bring quite a lot of new features to the Xperia P, which is not bad considering its a mid-range phone. Sony is expected to roll-out the Jelly Bean update for the Xperia P sometime in the next couple of months.

Sony Xperia P, U, go And Sola Get A New Bug-Fixing Firmware Update

Sony has started rolling out a new firmware update for its mid-range Droids – the Xperia P, U, Sola and go. The update does not bump up the firmware version but includes improvements to Wi-Fi performance, NFC, Camera, Messaging and more. There is also an overall improvement in the performance and stability of these handsets, thanks to the new update.

Owners of the above handsets can install the latest update on their handset directly via OTA (Over-The-Air), or can alternatively use Sony’s PC Companion.

Xperia U, go and Sola owners will automatically be notified about the update being available, if they are already running Ice Cream Sandwich on their devices. If not, then they will have to use Sony’s PC Companion app to update to Ice Cream Sandwich first.

Xperia P owners will get the OTA update depending on their region and carrier’s approval, which might take sometime.

While the Xperia Sola, go and U will not be upgraded to Jelly Bean from Sony, the Xperia P will get the update sometime next year.

Sony Xperia P, U, Go And Sola Gets A Software Update

Earlier this year, Sony launched the mid-range P, U, Go and Sola smartphones. Sadly, all of these devices were shipped with the out-dated Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Operating System. However, as promised, the manufacturer has already released the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Samdwich) update for these devices. Today, Sony is rolling out a new software update for the Xperia P, U, Go and Sola.

Before you get too excited, let me tell you that the latest update does not bring the newer Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS. However, it comes with lots of other enhancements, bug fixes and performance tweaks. According to the manufacturer, all Xperia P users will get a notification when the upgrade is ready, but direct availability in the phone may vary across different markets and carriers.

On the other hand, Xperia U, Xperia Go and Xperia Sola users with Android 4.0 will receive a notification in your phone and will be able to download it over-the-air. The latest update brings improvements to: stability, WiFi, tethering/portable hotspot, camera (capture and playback), NFC and Messaging.

If you have not yet upgraded your device to the Android 4.0 OS, then you will need to manually connect your device to the computer and use the PC Companion for Windows or Sony’s Bridge software for Mac. The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade will depend on the market as well as the carrier.

Sony Rolls Out Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update For The Xperia P

As promised by Sony, the company has started rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia P. Sony had promised to roll-out the ICS update for the Xperia P sometime between August 16th to August 23rd, and the Japanese company has managed to keep its word.

The company in a blog post announced that it has started the Ice Cream Sandwich roll-out for the Xperia P in certain markets and will continue the roll-out globally over the next few weeks. The company has also posted a small change-log of the update which is as follows -:

  • New ways to experience your media with new media applications – “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies”
  • Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption)
  • Lock screen with improved functionality
  • Resizable widgets for improved personalization
  • Improved control of your mobile data consumption
  • Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications

The blog post from Sony also states that the OTA update might take some time to show up on your phone, so users are recommended to use Sony’s PC Companion software to install the update. The company also mentions that the ICS update for the Xperia U, Sola and go is also just around the corner.

Xperia P Ice Cream Sandwich Update Coming In The Third Week Of August

Sony is probably the only Android OEM manufacturer that has updated nearly the whole of its 2011 line-up of Xperia handsets to Ice Cream Sandwich, and then started rolling out ICS updates for its 2012 devices. After rolling out the ICS update for the Xperia S, the company has turned its attention to its budget-oriented dual-core handset, the Xperia P.

The P packs in a dual-core NovaThor 1GHz Cortex-A9 CPU an ARM Mali-400 GPU, 512MB of RAM and a microSD card slot. The handset offers quite a bang for its buck, but has been pretty much over-shadowed by the 2011 line-up of Xperia devices from Sony.

Thankfully, the Japanese company has announced via its Facebook India page that it will start rolling out the ICS update for the Xperia P somewhere between August 19th to August 25th. Considering the hardware similarities between the Xperia P, U and Sola, the ICS updates for these phones should not be far away as well.

Sony Xperia P Announced; Comes With a WhiteMagic Display!

Sony has just announced its latest addition to its Xperia NXT series of  handsets, the Xperia P. The phone has an aluminum unibody, and has a 4-inch display with qHD (960×540) resolution, and comes with Sony’s new WhiteMagic display. This helps in making sure that the display is visible easily outside in the bright sunlight.

The Xperia P uses Sony’s own NovaThor SoC, which packs in two Cortex-A9 CPUs clocked at 1.2GHz and an ARM-Mali 400MP GPU. There is also 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory.

The phone also has an 8MP camera, which is also capable of recording videos in full HD (1080p) resolution. The usual bunch of connectivity features like HSPA+ 21Mbps, mini-HDMI port, GPS with A-GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC are also present. Sadly, the handset runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, instead of Ice Cream Sandwich, which is quite a disappointment.

The Xperia P will ship in mid-Q2 of 2012 at an unknown price.
