How To Limit or Disable Trash Feature in WordPress 2.9

2.9 introduces a new feature which allows you to Trash a post instead of actually deleting it. If you use WordPress 2.9, you will see that the delete link has been replaced by Trash.

Change Trash Retain Limit

By Default WordPress 2.9 is set to retain the Trash posts for 30 days, unless you manually delete it. To curtail the number of days trash post is stored for, add this line to your wp-config.php file.

   1: define('EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS', 7);

Doing this will limit the trash to only 7 days, change the number to limit to any other number of days you want.

Disabling Trash Feature Completely

If you do not want the trash feature, you can always disable it. However, you will need to add a line to your wp-config.php file.

   1: define('EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS', 0);

Doing this will ensure that no posts are store in the trash. In addition to that, the Trash link will display Delete Permanentlyinstead.

Moderate Comments and Add Custom Fields in Windows Live Writer

Quite sometime back I had a email conversation with few of the core developers from the Windows Live Writer team. I had sent them a Windows Live Writer wish list which listed some features that I felt were required in WLW. Thanks to Brandon who caught my tweet and offered to listen to my needs, and Joe Cheng from the WLW team for listening to the requests, some of the features are now available as WLW plugins.

The WLW team has announced a new plugin which adds new features to WLW, namely:

  • A plugin to moderate new comments on your blog (Approve/Spam/Delete, no replies yet)
  • A plugin to add custom fields to your blog post (#awesomeness).
  • A plugin to update your blogs tagline.

Moderating Comments in Windows Live Writer

To moderate comments using Windows Live Writer, click on the Comment Management link in the sidebar, or go to Insert menu and select Comment Managementfrom the list. You will be promoted to enter the password for your blog, enter the password and choose if you want to save it for future use.

The plugin will fetch all the recent comments and display it to you, you can approve, spam or delete the comments. However, you will not be able to reply to them. You can also try out another based app to reply to moderate WordPress comments from your desktop.

Adding Custom Fields to WLW

One of the most wanted features for WLW has finally arrived, this was one of the reasons why I wrote the All in one SEO pack WLW bridge. With the help of this plugin, you can now add custom fields to the posts you write in WLW, saving you time and efforts to re-edit the posts in the admin interface, just to add custom fields.

To add custom fields to your post, you will have to first publish an article, before the article is actually published, you will be shown a dialog box to activate the custom fields plug-in for the blog.

Once you have activated the plugin, you will be shown a input box to enter the custom fields for the plugin. Once you have input the values, click on the Ok button to add the custom fields to your post.

The next time you publish an article, the custom fields input box will be automatically shown to you. This feature will definitely save several bloggers a lot of time.

Installing Plugin in WLW

To install the plugin download the WordPressPlugin.dll and add it to the your WLW plugins folder. The plugins folder could be located in either of the folders listed below, based on your installation.

  • C:\Program Files\Windows Live Writer\Plugins
  • C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Writer\Plugins

Once again thanks to the WLW team for adding these features. We certainly look forward to seeing the rest of the things in our WLW wish list knocked off soon :-).

Top Theme Frameworks to build WordPress CMS Themes

Any WordPress user will find that there is a vast array of themes to choose from. However, very often there is a need to customize pre-existing themes to one’s own requirements for the best possible presentation of information. It is here that WordPress Theme Frameworks come in very handy.

The best and most useful WordPress Theme Frameworks are those which allow users to customize their themes in an organized visually appealing manner where information is not only in an easy-to-read format, but is also arranged in a useful systematic manner. Thematic is one such WordPress Theme Framework. Thematic is open-source, free, search engine optimized and gives users, especially beginners, an upper hand when it comes to adapting themes based on their custom needs.

ThemeHybrid is another good place for WordPress Theme Frameworks. It offers free service to members and has great community support for all your WordPress theme needs.

The modus operandi of Carrington, another WordPress Theme Framework, according to the site itself, is the creation of custom templates. It is a minimalist CMS theme for WordPress that chooses classy elegance to over-the-top designs and is perfect for those who prefer a more subtle style to something overtly showy. All downloads from here are free and GNU GPL v2 licensed.

Now for those who would prefer a lighter CMS theme for WordPress, the Whiteboard theme, designed by Brian Purkiss would fit the bill perfectly seeing that it is only 76KB. And so, you get a fast-loading theme, something that is a definite plus point as it would reduce the number of people who might just get bored while a page loads and go off to another site!

WP Framework also provides a clean and basic WordPress Theme Framework that is highly extensible, can be easily modified directly and stays abreast of the latest WordPress updates.

After you choose and download the WordPress Theme Framework of your liking, you can let loose your creative ingenuity to blend content and design elements together in a manner that best suits your content.

WordPress 2.9 To Have An Image Editor

With each new version of WordPress are included some new features that make life super easy. The version 2.8 which was just rolled out earlier this year included easier navigation, additional plugin installation support and a few other really helpful features.

This time, WordPress is going a step further and including a much needed image editor in the next version of WordPress. The following screenshot, courtesy of WP-Engineer, confirms this:

It will most probably not replace the image editing software generally used by bloggers but provide a convenient and quick way to editing images on the fly. Reportedly, WordPress 2.9 will also allow have a new filter to set the excerpt length and a Trash bin to store your deleted items in case you want to restore them.

Use PostgreSQL for WordPress Instead Of MySQL

MySQL is the preferred database for , however not everyone likes MySQL and there is no easy alternative to make WordPress use another database.

If you want to use PostgreSQL with WordPress there is a that will allow you to do it without making any changes to the internal WordPress codebase.

PostgreSQL for WordPress (PG4WP) gives you the possibility to install and use WordPress with a PostgreSQL database as a backend. It works by replacing calls to MySQL specific functions with generic calls that maps them to another database functions.

When needed, the original SQL queries are rewritten on the fly so that MySQL specific queries work fine with the backend database.

Support for other database can also be added if the appropriate drivers are written for them.

We tested this out on a local installation and were able to use PostgreSQL with WordPress without any issues.

The only problem we see with the plugin is that you need to perform a fresh install for this to work, however it might work on older installations if you are able to import the MySQL database to PostgreSQL.
