The freeware is a nice utility that brings back the Windows XP folder options feature with many other options included within. Apart from changing icons you can also open selected filetype in regedit.  It works perfectly in Windows 7 and Vista. Since the tool is portable, it can be used on any PC straight away without any installation. I recommend this tool as an easy solution for changing filetype icons.

What is the Best Free Online Virus Scanner?

[Windows Only]

security-high-2 The other day, I was reading a newsletter from Windows Secrets. At one point, Fred Langa recommended three different online scanners for detecting malware. He said Three free sites to try are: McAfee’s Freescan, Trendmicro’s HouseCall, and Symantec’s Security Check.

Fred is a trusted source to me. I’ve been reading PC advice from him since years ago, when he wrote the Langa List newsletter. However, I decided to try out Fred’s recommendations, because I’ve never been a big fan of online scanners. If there’s a good scanner out there, I want to know about it.

McAfee Freescan

First, I took a look at McAfee’s service. The foremost objection that I had to this service, is that it requires Internet Explorer. It also runs as an ActiveX application, which is another thing I’ve never liked. The scan seemed to be slow, but it seems to do a good job of detecting infections.

The last item that I believe it fails in, is that it can only detect infections. It cannot remove them. I wouldn’t waste my time here again.

Symantec Security Check

Next, I tried out Symantec’s service. You might be more familiar with their well known Norton security products. My initial impression of Symantec’s scanner suffered a big drop because it also requires Internet Explorer. However, I was impressed by the nice looking interface.

As nice as it looks, it can only detect malware, and you’re out of luck if you expect it to actually fix any problems. Adding to that, it gave me one false detection on a piece of software which I know is completely safe. Clicking on the Fix Nowbutton only sends you to Symantec’s site to read all about their premium anti-virus software.

The final failure that keeps me from returning, is that it told me that my computer had no antivirus software, even though I was using Microsoft Security Essentials. Hmmm, nice sales tactic, but it only works on foolish people. (Sorry! I mean those less knowledgeable about PCs.)

TrendMicro Housecall

At last, TrendMicro has unchained itself from Internet Explore. It works in any browser, and the scanner is offered as an installer EXE file. The scanning is typically slow, just as I saw with the other two services. However, another bright spot is that it can actually FIXsome of the problems it finds. Housecall is actually a service I could recommend.

The only drawback is that you have to save the installer file, or go back to the website if you want to scan with it in the future.

Of these three services, Housecall won easily. Some time back, I also reviewed ESET online scanner and it was just as good as Housecall, maybe better. Check it out.

I would only recommend an online scanner like these as a follow-up after cleaning a PC that was badly infected. Typically, I depend on MalwareBytes to clean up serious infections. If your current antivirus and antimalware software has failed, it’s not likely an online scanner will do you any good.

On the other hand, scanning with an online service like these won’t hurt, and it could pick up something your current software has missed. There are also several other online scanners that I haven’t tried yet. Do you use any online scanners that you’d recommend? Let us know in the comments below.

Thriller and Mario Paint Composer

media-playback-start-3[Windows + Mac]

Today I ran into a video showing off the Thriller tune in Mario Paint Composer. I was amazed. Here’s the video …

Click here if you can’t see the video.

I’d never heard of Mario Paint Composer, but it’s been around since 1999 on Nintendo game systems. According to Wikipedia, Mario Paint was rated the 162nd best game made on a Nintendo System in Nintendo Power‘s Top 200 Games list.

The design team at unFun Games has a version you can run in Windows and Mac. Anyone, even someone as musically stupid as me, can create their own tunes in it. Here’s what the authors of the game say about it.

Mario Paint Composer is a remake of the music system from the original Mario Paint for the Super NES. It is made by unFun Games. The game is, of course, completely free, but we ask that you check out our website if you like it. You’ll find other fun online games to play there for PC and Mac!

Mario Paint Composer is 100% virus/spyware free. It will not harm your computer in any way.

I downloaded and unzipped it to my computer and within only a few minutes, I’d figured out how it works. You can load tunes, save tunes and even download tunes that others have created.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Mario Paint Composer is fun for all ages. It’s easy to create and share music with others and the software is easy to use. It’s portable freeware and you can run it from a Flash card or USB stick if you need to. This one gets a big thumbs up from me.

Boxee Box Home Entertainment System – Available for Pre-Order

boxee-logoBoxee is a social media service that started out as freeware for creating HTPCs (Home Theater PCs) that can run on Windows, Mac and Linux. They’ve partnered up with the famous D-Link company, which is better known for manufacturing routers, to create the Boxee Box.

The Boxee Box is a basically a small computer (set top box) that joins your TV to your internet connection. It allows you to play media files from your home network or tons of content off the internet. You’ll find thousands of popular TV shows, movies and music in addition to many of the popular sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Pandora.

Here’s what the Boxee site says about this new product.

    • Play what you normally watch on your computer   (whether it is on the Internet or your home network) on your TV
    • Tailor the Internet experience to a huge flat screen
    • Do it in full HD, 1080p with 5.1 surround whenever possible
    • Share the stuff you watch with your friends and see what they are watching
    • Use a simple remote rather than a keyboard and mouse

What’s it look like? What’s in it?

It looks odd to me. Here’s a peek at it.

It comes with a unique RF remote controller that has navigation buttons on one side, and a qwerty keypad on the other side.

They promise that the Boxee Box is easy to set up. In general, you plug it into the outlet, connect it to your TV, then Boxee pops in to tell you how to connect to the internet via your home network. If you have a previous Boxee account, it will import all of your settings and services.

Here’s what the some of the screens look like.

I was not able to find out what operating system that they use in the box, but it runs on the the Intel CE4100 system-on-a-chip, which is a new Atom style processor. Here are the system specs quoted at Amazon.

Where to get it?

The Boxee Box is available as a pre-order for $199.00, exclusively at Amazon (in the US) and Best Buy / Future Shop (in Canada). The units are scheduled to start shipping in November and the cost will increase to around $230.

You can download the Windows, Mac and Linux software here.

I have a feeling that the Boxee Box will do well, but they have some stiff competition coming from Google TV, Apple TV and even Microsoft. I think they’d do much better at a price point closer to $100.

Collect Complete PC System Information with WinAudit

[Windows only] There are dozens of utilities around that will give you details about the guts of your PC. If you’re looking for a free and easy to use system information tool, WinAudit is one of the best. Here’s what the authors of WinAudit say in their description of this program.

  • E-mail
  • Database export

The program is offered for download as a ZIP file. After downloading, you should unpack the single program file to a safe place. To launch the program, simply double click the WinAudit.exe file.

When running in normal mode, this is what you’ll see:

The first things you should do are to set your default language under the Language menu and then click the Options button to set the types of information you want to collect. As you can see next, there are plenty of categories of information to be seen.

The report interface is easy to navigate and search.

Once you are done looking things over, you’ll be asked if you want to save the report. The reports generated can be saved in several formats, such as PDF, CHM, CSV, TXT, HTML or XML.

The information you file away should probably be saved someplace safe, either online or on another PC. That way you’ll have it if you ever need to replace broken hardware or software.
