Beware of the Fake System Tool

malware[Windows]

The other day, I spotted a warning at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. They presented some great information about a piece of malware called    Winwebsec,  which is more commonly seen as “System Tool“. Apparently it’s popping up more often now, so I decided to put out a warning to our readers.

I’ve actually run into this one before, while fixing some of my friends and family’s computers. It wasn’t much trouble to get rid of at the time, but I’ve read that some of the newer versions are more difficult to remove.

An infected computer will start getting fake warnings like the one shown here. These warnings are very realistic. Their purpose is to try to fool you into buying some more fake software that will make things even worse for you.

system-tool-fakealert

I looked around and I found one or two good articles that tell you how to remove the fake System Tool, but I decided to put together my own little guide.  Below you’ll find a slideshow that I’ve put together. It will give you a better idea of what to look for and some suggestions on how to remove this Fake System Tool.

If you can’t see the slideshow here, you can view it at Google.  For those interested, here are some cool technical details about this infectious fake.

As many of you have learned by now, not all free screensavers are created equal. Many times, free means that you have to install stupid toolbars, adware and other unwanted junk along with the screensaver. That’s not true of the ones at NewFreeScreensavers.

Microsoft to Launch Windows for Tablets Only by Q3 2012

Despite rumors of Microsoft working feverishly on a Windows tablet launch in 2011, it seems that Microsoft’s answer to Android and iOS for tablets won’t be ready until Q3 2012. A recent report by Business Week says that Microsoft won’t launch a tablet version of Windows until the 2012 back-to-school season, which by all measures will be too late for the software giant.

“If 2011 is the year of the tablet wars, Microsoft will be awfully late suiting up for that battle, said Michael Gartenberg, a New Jersey-based analyst for research firm Gartner Inc. It’s not a good position to be in.”

It has already been over an year since Apple unveiled the iPad and in less than a week, the iPad 2 will be available around the world. Android has also entered the tablet race and is poised to become the leading tablet platform soon, thanks to manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung and HTC rushing to launch tablets running Android.

Even HP’s webOS tablets and RIM’s Blackberry Playbook will be available by the end of 2011. Microsoft will likely be the last major entrant into the tablet arena, and it will probably be too late for it to gain a foothold of the market then. The only hope for Microsoft is if it is able to leverage the huge Windows market share in PCs and the power of the vast library of Windows software already available.

The tablet market is set to explode in the coming years, as consumer focus shifts from personal computers to tablets. By the time Windows tablets are launched, we will probably see the iPad 3 and the third generation of Android tablets in the market. The future of Microsoft’s tablet OS seems very bleak.

German Foreign Office Falls Back to Using Windows XP

The German Foreign Ministry has undone ten years of hard work and has decided to fall back to using Windows-XP against the current process of the migration to Linux. This comes as a double shock, first the migration away from Linux and second, the choice of the now-obsolete Windows XP.
open-source
The migration to Linux started in 2001 and by 2005, the Government has been using,

open source software such as Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice on its desktop systems. Mobile systems use a Debian GNU/Linux based Linux and office PCs are configured with a dual Windows / Linux boot.

Open-source was operational on German-government systems by 2007 and they reported obvious profits in using open-source over closed source. However, recently, the foreign ministry has seen some problems in running open-source and has decided to fall back to Windows XP saying,

the cost of adapting and extending it, for example in writing printer and scanner drivers, and of training, have proved greater than anticipated. The extent to which the potential savings trumpeted in 2007 have proved realisable has, according to the government, been limited though it declines to give any actual figures. Users have, it claims, also complained of missing functionality, a lack of usability and poor interoperability.

The government claims that the cost of migrating to Windows will be far less than the cost of managing an army of programmers to write drivers for all the hardware they have currently. This raises some serious questions on the hardware and the technical expertise that government employees have.

The reason for this migration seems to be twofold. First, the government employees seem exceptionally familiar with the Windows UI, specifically that of Windows XP and have resentments against using anything else. Secondly, the German government possibly uses some legacy hardware that has driver issues with Linux, but has full Windows support.

However, if even after a decade of migration, the government had to turn back, it proves that Linux is not ready for the common-man yet and is still, an operating system for power-users.

Using a Comic Book Viewer and Not Growing Up

[Windows, Mac, Linux]

Did you ever read comic books when you were younger? Maybe, you are like me, and you will never grow out of enjoying a good comic book. If that’s the case, you may want to read and collect comic books on your computer.

Recently, I spotted a post at How To Geek about a great comic book viewer for Ubuntu Linux, called Comix. I tried it out and I was not disappointed. Comix is already in the Ubuntu Software Center, and you don’t have to work hard to find it.

Typically, I spend most of my time on Windows computers, and I wondered if there was a good comic book reader for XP, Vista and Seven. I found the answer very fast on Google. There’s a great viewer for Windows and Mac, called Comical. It’s an Open Source project, and fairly new, but it makes viewing comic book files pretty simple.

Here is the description of Comical from the readme file.

————————————————
Comical – The Comic Book Archive reader
————————————————

Finally – a cross-platform, open-source CBR and CBZ reader!   Read your favorite scanned comic books and graphic novels with Comical’s absurdly easy GUI and in-your-face double page display!

Nifty Features:

  • Single-Page or Double-Page display modes.
  • Several zoom modes – Fit, Fit-to-Width, Fit-to-Height, Original, and Custom.
  • Crisp image scaling with algorithms adapted from FreeImage 3.
  • Autodetects double pages scanned together and displays it accordingly.
  • Page rotation.
  • Full-Screen mode.
  • Left-to-Right or Right-to-Left browsing.
  • Displays JPG, GIF, and PNG images.
  • Supports RAR(.cbr) and ZIP(.cbz) comic book archives.
  • Supports all encrypted RAR archives as well as ZIP archives with pkzip 2.04g
    encryption.

I’ll take a moment to explain the two file types .CBR and .CBZ, that are mentioned above. CBZ means Comic Book ZIPped, and CBR means Comic Book RARed. Both of those are simple archives of images. Therefore, the Comical viewer is a great tool for viewing any collection of images that is archived as a ZIP or RAR file.

Do you need to know how to open ZIP, RAR, ISO or other archives?

There are very few places that offer truly free comic book files. Here is one place that will help you find some.

Free Online Comic Books

Searching online, you’ll find that most of the comic books there are pirated copies and are located in places that are not always safe to visit. Please be extremely cautious while looking for free comic books. I recommend using the WOT addon for filtering out risky search results.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

The Comical viewer is small, easy to install, and simple to use. If you need an easy way to read CBR and CBZ comics, this is a great solution.

New Official Windows 7 Themes – Antarctic and Rango

In most places in the northern hemisphere, frigid winter has already begun making way for the delightful spring. Snow covered sideways and icy winds have been replaced by blooming magnolias. However, if you are already missing the snow, you can deck up your desktop with Microsoft’s new “Antarctic” themepack for Windows 7. The new themepack features 15 stunning wallpapers that capture Antarctica in all its glory. Australian comedian Andrew Denton had been very correct when he remarked that, “If Antarctica were music it would be Mozart. Art, and it would be Michelangelo. Literature, and it would be Shakespeare”.

Microsoft has also published a “Rango” themepack, ahead of the release of the animated film of the same name. Rango is a comedy that tells the tale of a pet chameleon who aspires to be a hero, and is then thrust into the role when he ends up in a western town plagued by bandits. The movie features Johnny Depp’s voice in the titular role. It will hit the theaters on March 4 in US and UK, and on April 20 in India. In the meanwhile you can enjoy seven lighthearted wallpapers from Rango courtesy of Microsoft.
