Movie Rental Site Vudu Suffers Break-in; Customer Data Stolen

Wal-Mart owned movie rental/purchase site has become the latest victim of data breach. But unlike some of the previous attacks, Vudu data breach didn’t involve any remote hacking attempts.

Some lawbreakers broke into Vudu’s office and stole a number of items including hard drives. Unfortunately for its users, the same hard drives contained usernames, passwords and the last four digits of credit cards of some customers.

Vudu has sent out emails to all affected users urging them to reset their passwords. They have also released a press release which is provided below.

On March 24, 2013, there was a break in at the VUDU office and a number of items were stolen, including hard drives. These hard drives contained customer data including names, email addresses, mailing addresses, account activity, dates of birth, and encrypted passwords, but NO full credit card numbers. We are proactively retiring and resetting all passwords and notifying all customers. As another level of protection for customers we are also providing AllClear ID identity protection services. We reported the theft to law enforcement immediately, and are cooperating fully with their investigation.

Luckily, Vudu doesn’t store full credit card numbers of its users. Hence the damage was greatly reduced. So, if you are a Vudu customer, we strongly recommend changing your password as soon as possible. Also, if you have used the same password for some other service(which is actually a very bad idea), please change those passwords as well.

Apple iPhone 4 Pre-Orders Shipped Early; Hits Walmart And Best Buy As Well

Reports are flying in that most people are receiving their iPhone 4 pre-order before the scheduled date – tomorrow. For some other people, their iPhone 4 is in the FedEx delivery truck and should be in their hands by the endApple iPhone 4 of the day. However, it will be interesting to see whether Apple and AT&T will activate these phones before tomorrow i.e. Wednesday.

I guess the pre-orders were shipped early to soften the load on AT&T, and Apple servers, as well as FedEx delivery service. Engadget also reports that the first batch of iPhone 4s have hit the Walmart and Best Buy shelves. Neither Best Buy nor Walmart have confirmed this news. However, the images posted on the website do look legitimate.

Update: Apparently, some people who received their iPhone 4 early were able to activate it without any hitch.

iPhone 4 Will Be Available At Wal-Mart On June 24th

Pre-ordering for the latest iPhone starts June 15th and it will be available at Apple and AT&T stores on June 24th. However, it seems like Apple has a more aggressive sale goals this time. For the first time, the new iPhone will also be sold through a number of large retail chains including Wal-Mart and BestBuy.

iPhone 4

Lot of retailers have previously carry iPhones but none of them have been lucky enough to sell the device on its launch day. This will provide people some convenient alternatives and cut the lines short at Apple and AT&T stores. From Apple’s point of view, it will be easier to cater to the already huge and growing demand of iPhone buyers and not make them wait for hours. Plus, this strategy is in sync with Apple’s plan to sell more iPhone units than ever before. According to this latest report from Apple Insider, Apple has ordered enough parts to sell an average of 3 Million iPhone 4’s per month.

Asia Optical is a company that makes VGA lens kits for Apple iPhone 4 camera and according to its chairman Robert Lai, they are currently delivering 3 million units per month to Apple. If Apple does sell 3 million units per month, this will be a 20% increase in year-over-year sales.

Walmart Selling iPhone 3GS for $97

With the anticipation of the release of next month at , the 3GS will slow but surely lose its charm since people would rather wait to get the next generation device rather than buying an old device.

iPhone 3GS

However, now Walmart is enticing users to buy an iPhone 3GS by dropping the price to $97 for a two year contract. For $97 users will get an iPhone 3GS 16GB phone with a binding 2 year contract with AT&T.

If you have been reading this blog, you would know how I had raised issues on how Apple was keen on dumping iPhone 3GS in other markets when it announced the iPhone 3GS in India.

So would you be prepared to buy an iPhone 3GS for $97 considering that an iPhone 4G is just around the corner, or would you pass the offer and rather buy an iPhone 4G instead. Do let me know through your comments.
