Rumor : HTC Thunderbolt Specs Leak

Please read this post with a huge pinch of salt. The folks over at HTC Inside have managed to get their hands on what is supposed to be the specs of the upcoming HTC Thunderbolt. It is already known that the Thunderbolt will be the first 4G LTE handset from Verizon and HTC and will be unveiled at the upcoming CES.

HTC_Thunderbolt_Specs

Apparently, the Thunderbolt will pack in a dual core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor. The device will also sport a huge 4.3-inch LCD along with an 8MP camera at its back accompanied by 2 LED flash. The front of the phone will house a hold your breath 5MP camera for video calling. The Thunderbolt will have 16GB of on board memory along with a microSD slot expandable up to 128GB. The handset will also launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board. Oh! The phone has a huge 1800 mAh battery as well.

Now, I guess readers must have understood why I told them to read this post with a huge pinch of salt. Qualcomm had demonstrated its dual-core Snapdragon processor just a month back and the company made it clear that it won’t hit the handsets before Q2 of 2011. Also, a 5MP front-facing camera? Seriously!?!!

In my opinion, the Thunderbolt will be similar to the Desire HD except for a few subtle changes and the 4G LTE support.

T-Mobile UK’s Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 Update Rolling Out Now

Samsung started rolling out the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for unbranded Galaxy S handsets in early November. The Korean company has been slowly rolling out the update to unlocked devices in various regions of the world. It was just a couple of days ago that the company started rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S in India.

Now, Samsung and T-Mobile UK have started rolling out the Android 2.2 update for T-Mobile branded Galaxy S devices in the U.K.

Along with the usual KIES release, T-Mobile has also released an OTA (Over-The-Air) software update. However, the OTA update might be delayed so users are recommended to try out KIES first. It is still unknown when all the four carrier branded variants of the Galaxy S AT&T’s Captivate, Verizon’s Fascinate, Sprint’s Epic 4G and T-Mobile’s Vibrant in the United States will get their share of Froyo love.

Hopefully, Samsung will release the Android 2.2 update for these devices before the end of the year.

Motorola Droid Gets A Software Update – FRG830

The Motorola Droid is the bestselling Android handset until date. The phone launched with Android 2.0 on board, and then later was among the first few handsets to get the Android 2.1 and 2.2 update early. Now, Motorola and Verizon are going to release another software update for the Droid.

The FRG830 update for the handset updates many of the applications and widgets and also fixes some bugs.

The update also brings with it support for Microsoft 2010 Exchange and a new Gmail user interface’ which sounds pretty interesting.

Here is the full change-log from Verizon :

o Updated Twitter application with new authentication support

o Updated Amazon Widget

o Updated News & Weather widget

o Improvements to Exchange ActiveSync and support for Exchange 2010 connections

o Added new Gmail user interface

HTC Merge Makes An Appearance On Verizon’s Website

The Merge was supposed to be announced by Verizon and HTC at the Droid celebration party in Seattle, tonight. Sadly, that did not happen but the handset did make an appearance on Verizon’s website. Though, the image was pulled back a few minutes later. The full 360 degree view of the phone was up on the site before being pulled.

Merge_360

This definitely means that the Merge is quite close to its release. The HTC Merge is the Verizon’s version of the T-Mobile G2 or the HTC Desire Z. The handset sports a 3.7-inch S-LCD and is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm Scorpio processor. The handset runs on Android 2.2 with HTC Sense UI on top of it. The Merge also packs a pop-out four-row QWERTY keyboard.

However, it is still unclear whether Verizon will be branding the Merge as a Droid device or just another Android handset in their portfolio.

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Unveil New Mobile Payment System – ISIS

WSJ had reported yesterday that the major wireless providers in the US – AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile were working on a joint project to deploy a mobile payment system. It looks like that piece of information was absolutely spot on.

ISIS aims to use NFC technology to enable easy mobile payments and point-of-sale purchases. With all the three heavyweights backing it, the service already has a massive user base to begin with.

ISIS Mobile Payment System

“The new venture will enable contactless mobile payment and commerce services using near-field communication technology. NFC uses short-range, high frequency wireless technology to enable the encrypted exchange of information between devices at a short distance. The new system is being designed and built to include strong security and privacy safeguards.”

“Our mobile commerce network, through relationships with merchants, will provide an enhanced, more convenient, more personalized shopping experience for consumers,” said Michael Abbott, Chief Executive Officer of Isis. “While mobile payments will be at the core of our offering, it is only the start. We plan to create a mobile wallet that ultimately eliminates the need for consumers to carry cash, credit and debit cards, reward cards, coupons, tickets and transit passes.”
