As is often the case with Ashampoo products, shortly after they roll out new versions, you start seeing free offers for the previous versions.
There’s nothing wrong with that at all. I’ve used several Ashampoo products after free versions became available. I’ve found their offerings to be very good in most cases. Ashampoo WinOptimizer is also one of those cases.
What is WinOptimizer?
WinOptimizer is a PC cleaner and optimizer. After scanning the system, the software offers you opportunities to change the PC settings to increase performance. It also scans for unnecessary (junk) files and orphaned or corrupted registry keys.
Here are a few additional features:
WinOptimizer has consistently had a 4 out of 5 user rating at Download.com and is a popular download despite a normal cost of around $40 or $50 USD after a trial period.
In order to get it for free, you will have to jump through a few hoops. However, none of the hoops are on fire, and I’ll guide you through them step by step.
Many of us use heavy applications for maintaining our PC registry issues, start-up program list and so on. These heavy applications themselves sometimes cause trouble with the PC. If you are searching for a simple tool that can help you to do these jobs, Mr.Fix is for you!
Mr.Fix is a freeware tool. This is a registry cleaner that helps you to fix your registry issues in a single click. Apart from registry cleaning, it also has some other interesting features that are worth looking at.
As the name says, it’s main objective is to scan for issues/errors in the registry. It gives you a list of corrupted keys and entries in your registry. You can select the errors you want to fix and click “Fix Now”.
Another good feature in this application is it’s built-in uninstaller through which you can uninstall the applications installed on your PC and keep it clean.
Apart from these, it has start-up manager by the help of which you can monitor the processes which run in the start-up. You can also add some tweaks, like hiding the programs list in the start menu, hiding the shutdown button and so on!
If you are using some big heavy apps for normal day-to-day registry cleaning, then this is a good substitute for that. It only occupies around 1.6MB of your disk space! Overall, keeping in mind many factors like interface and efficiency, this tool can be given a average rating.
Festive season is on! I am sure many of you are looking for creative ways to wish your beloved ones. If so, here is a tool that might help you wish your beloved ones.
Photo Card Maker is a freeware that helps you to create personalized greeting cards for different occasions such as New year, Christmas and so on. You can write your own message and add your own photo to the cards and send it to your beloved ones.
Using this tool is very simple. All you need to do is select a template from a gallery of 32-35 templates. (If you want more templates, you can even visit the official website. It has some new christmas templates). After selecting a suitable template, add your desired photos and edit the greeting message. Save it and send it to your beloved ones!
This tool could have been a lot more better. At the first look, I thought it has some amazing features. I was expecting auto-fitting of photos in the frames. That feature was missing. It would really look awkward if you had a square/rectangular photo inside a circular frame! So, a point goes down here.
Another feature I was expecting from this is that it could have had a “Send Greeting” option integrated in itself. But, now you need to save it and send it seperately.
However, it has got an average collection of themes. It has templates for various occasions such as Sports, Christmas, Cartoon, Love and so on. You can even download the latest ones from its website.
If you already know what DNS is, then you might get a real kick out of Dns Jumper.
Dns Jumper is a small, portablefreeware application which makes changing your DNS settings as easy as clicking a button.
Here’s what it looks like:
You’ll need to download and unpack a ZIP file in order to gain access to the Dns_Jumper.exefile. There is no installation. Just move the EXE file to a safe folder and double click it to run Dns Jumper.
The home site for this little utility is fairly new, so it’s not rated by anyone yet, but this particular app seems to be quite safe to use.
Using this free little app sure beats having to dig into the Control Panel settings. The fact that it’s portable freeware is just icing on the cake. However, since I’m not familiar with the site and it’s author, I’ll reserve giving Jumper a higher rating. Oh, one thing I’d suggest to the author is … get rid of the music.
Antivirus software are usually used to protect your computer from threats, however, after using an Antivirus for a while you might decide to remove it completely, either due to not being satisfied with it, or because the trial period for it ended. Whatever the reasons, sometimes Antivirus software are stubborn and don’t have straightforward removal tools. I did encounter one such issue while removing ESET from the computer.
Here are some Antivirus removal tools which will allow you to completely uninstall popular Antivirus software from your computer. A big thanks to The Windows Club forum for the putting up these tools.
Kaspersky : KAVRemover will help you to remove all Kaspersky Labs products. Download KAVRemove.
AppPaths is a handy program which will display a list of installed software and allow you to export it or save the list as a file.
The app is both a Freeware and Portable Software. However, it only does one part of what it promises. It can only display the installed software list. The Save button is practically useless as it does not do anything. I searched high and low but could not find the file, this in turn makes this software not so good on our list.
Techie Buzz Verdict
We hope the developer of the application is reading this and will let us know where the application list is saved? We searched high and low but could not find it, while you are reading this, kindly add an option to export the data as both a HTML or text file.
We would have rated this app much higher, but alas for the missing save option, or mysterious save location as we might call it.
Google Wave might not be the best product of the year as it was made out to be. However, there are still many users who use it. Google Wave Desktop notifier is a Freeware and Open source software which will notify you about new waves in your Google Wave account in the system tray on your desktop.
Google Wave notifier can come in pretty handy if you do not want to keep up with new waves without having to open the website every time.
Oh am I running out of cash? How did that happen? These are few questions we tend to ask ourselves whenever we are reaching the end of the month, since many times we do not keep track of income and expenditures and don’t realize when we cross our budgets.
Budget Tracker is a simple tool created in Adobe Air which will allow you to track you income and expenses and create a proper budget without breaking your head. It allows you add different types of accounts such as Income account, Utility accounts, Loan Accounts, Credit Card accounts and Misc Expenses Account.
Techie Buzz Verdict
Budget Tracker is a very basic budget tracking program and does not feature things such as an option to add day to day expenses. In addition to that, it also lacks the ability to create budget accounts for different months, so you are need to edit the same account over and over again.
If you are a regular reader of Techie-Buzz, you might remember that we had reviewed a freeware, with which you can mount folders as virtual drives (Virtual Subst). Today, we have found another useful freeware that you can use for mounting folders as drives. If you are wondering how this tool can be helpful, check the previous post that is linked above.
Virtual Drives Manager is a really simple tool. It has a very minimal interface. All you need to do is, select a folder> click on “Create Virtual Drive”. It will make the selected folder as a drive!
Here is a screenshot of how it looks.
This small application doesn’t need any installation. You just need to extract the RAR file and start using it.
Quite sometime back we had told you on how you can find the XP Product CD key on your installation disk. If you are planning to re-install your system or format it, here is a nice freeware which will allow you to find your Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 CD Key.
Though the product says that it only extracts CD keys from XP, we successfully ran this on Windows Vista and Windows 7 too.
