Dealing with completed tasks is pretty simple too, all you have to do is select the task from the main interface and click on the “Mark as done” button.

Say for example, you want to travel somewhere 6 months down the line, you can create a task and set reminder to book tickets 2 months in advance, this will help you get a cheaper deal, while booking tickets.

Keep Your USB Drive Private with SafeHouse Explorer

safehouse-icon Ever since USB sticks have become popular, there’s been a real demand for methods to keep the files on them private. Many people worry what’ll happen to their data if they lose their little USB sticks.

The first solutions I used was simple file encryption. It works fine as long as the encryption programs could be stored on the USB stick. Other methods I’ve seen even go as far as special hardware built right into the stick. That makes them more expensive but still affordable by business users. If you look hard, you’ll find dozens of ways to keep the data on your USB drive safe from prying eyes.

Recently I’ve been trying out a great program called SafeHouse Explorer. It’s done everything I’ve wanted so far with few problems. Here’s what the home page for SafeHouse says about their software:

“What will happen to you when your private information falls into the wrong hands? It’s all preventable! SafeHouse Explorer is free security software for hard drives and memory sticks. Keep everyone out. Period. Get it now. Or be sorry later.”

Set up is simple. Download a 3mb installer file and agree to the terms of use as you run it. The SafeHouse program will appear in your Windows Add/Remove panel and start menu just like any other application. It can be used on your hard drives or USB drives and other portable media. To take it on the road, find the SafeHouseExplorer.exe file in the Program Files folder and copy it to a USB drive. It will now run as a “stand-alone” or portable program.

It works by creating an encrypted and password protected virtual drive (or volume) inside a single file. Simply click the “New Volume” button in SafeHouse and follow the volume creation wizard as it guides you through the process. It’s pretty simple and basically only needs to know the volume file name, location and the size you need.

safehouse-password-dialog

The SafeHouse Explore interface looks a lot like a Windows Explorer file browser. It acts like Windows Explorer even down to dragging, dropping and right clicking on files. You’ll have no problem getting used to managing the files in your protected volumes.

safehouse-explorer-view

SafeHouse Explorer has the following features and more:
* stand-alone on USB or other media such as iPods or floppy disks
* hides, locks and encrypts any file types
* 256-bit Twofish advanced encryption
* unlimited number of storage volumes
* volumes can be up to 2,000 Gigabytes in size
* password strength meter
* create self-extracting EXE encrypted volumns

Techie Buzz Verdict:
This is excellent free protection for your private data. It’s very easy to use and the stand-alone copy works even on PC’s that don’t allow you administrative rights. The only failing I saw is that when it’s run in stand-alone mode, each time you fire it up, it asks you to agree to the Terms of Use.

I feel good about recommending SafeHouse Explorer to anyone who needs to be a little paranoid with their private data.

Improve Your Typing Speed With Rapid Typing Tutor

An improved typing speed can go a long way towards boosting one’s productivity. The best thing is that you don’t need to join expensive classes to improve your typing speed. There are numerous free utilities which can help you. Rapid Typing Tutor is one such application.

Rapid Typing Tutor includes a large collection of typing lessons which will help you in getting accustomed to your keyboard. There are separate lessons focusing on specific character combinations, syllables, upper case letters, special symbols and words. During typing lessons you will be assisted by a virtual pair of hands. This is a neat feature and lets novice typists learn how to place their fingers on the keyboard. Rapid Typing Tutor includes fairly in-depth statistics and allows you to track your progress. You can even submit your score online and compare with other users.

Rapid-Typing-Tutor-Improve-Typing-Speed

The biggest problem with Rapid Typing Tutor is its interface. It is confusing and ugly. To make matters worse, each of the available skins is equally poor. The other problem is that during typing lessons Rapid Tutor only displays few words at a time. While this is fine for novices, it’s a huge distraction for advanced typists. It prevents them from seeing in advance which words are coming up next. If you type too fast, your eyes will get strained as the text will fly across your screen. The other big problem is that, Rapid Typing Tutor doesn’t put enough emphasis on accuracy. If you mistype nothing happens. Ideally you should have to go back and correct all the errors.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Rapid Tutor is a nice tool for beginners. The virtual keyboard and broad range of typing exercises allow novice typists to get familiarized with the keyboard. However, good typists who are looking to further polish their typing skills will only end up getting frustrated.

Techie Buzz Verdict

First, let us look at the good points of this one; It is a very light-weight app, or rather weightless. It reduces lot of time consumption by enabling you to upload screenshots with a single click. It automatically deletes the pictures after you close the application. That saves a lot of memory. Very simple interface.

There also a few bugs. It has an error in authorizing with Picasa account. However, no errors with Flickr. It doesn’t show any message about whether upload is successful or not after the upload is complete.

However, a nice app to have if you use Flickr a lot.

Install Portable Applications Using ZipInstaller

Portable applications are great since they don’t need to be installed and can be carried on a USB device. However, for people who have several dozen applications on their system, portable applications can be slightly inconvenient. Most portable applications don’t provide any option to create start menu entry or desktop shortcuts. In other words, if you want to launch the utility, you will have to manually browse to its location. The same applies if you want to remove the utility. In the end, most such portable utilities end up being forgotten and lie around unnoticed in some corner of your system.

Zip-Installer-Install-Portable-Application

ZipInstaller is a free utility which installs all no-install applications which are packaged in zip files. It extracts them to a specified folder, places shortcuts in your startmenu and desktop and even creates an uninstall module which can be accessed from Add/Remove Programs.

Techie Buzz Verdict

ZipInstaller has an obvious limitation – it works only for those applications which are packaged in ZIP files. Like all Nirsoft Utilities, it performs a specific task and does it extremely well. While it will prove to be an indispensable resource to some, others won’t even feel the need for it.

A Fast and Easy Control Panel for Windows 7 and Vista

Every day, I learn more about Windows 7 and it’s sometimes hidden features. Since I skipped Vista, a great deal of the options and settings are new to me.

There are dozens of utilities and settings applets built into Windows 7 and Vista. Often the easiest way to find them is to search for them by name in the Start menu.

The problem is that there are far more settings and utilities available than any average user would find on his own. What if you don’t know the name of the app or control you are looking for? What if you didn’t know it existed?

Some people at “The Windows Club” have tried to make it easier to find all the applets and controls with their new “Windows Access Panel“.

Here’s what they say about it:

Windows Access Panel v 1.0 is meant to minimize your trouble in accessing such programs. It has been tested on   Windows 7 & Windows Vista. It can simply be downloaded and used as a portable application. Place it in your Programs Files and Pin its shortcut to your Start menu and you are all set to a faster way of accessing   the ‘hidden’ Windows system utilities.”

windows_access_controlpanel-550px

I tried it and it’s simply great, but I do have a couple of recommendations for it’s improvement.

I was not able to resize the Windows Access Panel (WAP)  in any way. It was very large and disappeared from my screen on the sides. I think they need to make this window re-sizable and perhaps add more tabs to better organize the tools into smaller groups.

In the future it might also be nice to be able to add your own shortcuts or commands into WAP.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

It’s safe, it’s useful and will save you time. I especially like the fact that it’s portable. However, I look forward to improvements that will make it a “must have” application.
