Shortened URLs became immensely popular with the popularity of micro blogging sites like Twitter, Facebook etc. Shortened URLs are fine but they do not reveal the real destination of a link. You may be redirected to a spam site or may be the shortened link starts a malicious script, when clicked.

If you want to know the real destination of a shortened link, Unhid will come in handy. Just paste the shortened link in the box provided and hit the Unhidbutton. It will reveal the original destination of the shortened link instantly.

For example: according to Unhid, this shortened link redirects to Techie-Buzz homepage.

The browser bookmarklet: Unhid has a very useful browser bookmarklet to check the real destination of a shortened link. Just drag and drop the bookmarklet in your bookmarks toolbar and use it whenever you want to check the destination of a shortened link.

When you activate the bookmarklet, Unhid will prevent loading any shortened link directly. It will show a warning message which looks like the following one

unhid-bookmarklet-warning

Press ok and you are taken to the Unhid homepage where you will learn the destination of the shortened link. Press cancel and you can load the link normally.

Techie-Buzz Verdict

Unhid is cool and does a good job in revealing the destination of shortened links. But using the bookmarklet or the website is a bit time consuming. If they could come up with a browser extension that checks the destination of a shortened link in mouse hover property, it would be perfectly okay.

There aren’t any restrictions and you are free to add any number of tasks in any given day. The reports tab gives you detailed insights on how you spend your time on different projects, clients etc.

Techie-Buzz Verdict

The Colorhat tool serves the purpose well. However i would like to see more functions like: tracking a group project where more than one person is involved. If the developers can come up with an extension or a bookmarklet that shows the timer on browser status bar, it would be a great help.

Diagnose and Fix Common Monitor Problems with ScreenFix.net

ScreenFix.net is a handy web-resource which helps computer users get the most out of their monitors. It not only allows you to diagnose common problems but also suggests optimal settings and provides quick fixes.

ScreenFix consists of four checkers (diagnostic tools) and two fixers (repair tools). They are as follows:

  • TN Monitor Check: Many of the present day monitors utilize TN (Twisted Nematic) panels as they are inexpensive. However, TN panels have a significant disadvantage. Their color reproduction isn’t consistent and depends on the viewing angle. TN Monitor Check is a quick test to determine whether your monitor uses TN Technology.
  • Gamma Checker: Gamma settings affect an object’s perceived brightness and contrast. Correctly configuring your monitor’s gamma settings is essential if you are playing a game with dark environments. Gamma Checker assists you in calibrating your monitor’s Gamma level.
  • Phasing Checker: Incorrect clock/phase settings can lead to blurry and shimmering images. Phasing Checker helps you in figuring out whether your phase settings are incorrect.
  • Brightness Checker: The importance of having correct brightness settings cannot be over emphasized. It affects color reproduction and hence the quality of the displayed image. Brightness Checker helps you in calibrating your monitor’s brightness settings.
  • Flicker Fixer: Just as the name suggests, the Flicker Fixer attempts to solve flickering problems.
  • Dead Pixel Fixer: Dead Pixels are something nobody wants. Yet, they are one of the most common and annoying problems with LCD Monitors. There is no guaranteed way to fix dead pixels, but ScreenFix claims that their solution works in more than 50% of the cases.

ScreenFix - Fix Common Monitor Problems

Techie Buzz Verdict

ScreenFix-Techie-Buzz-RecommendedScreenFix is an extremely nifty website. It brings together a set of particularly useful tools and presents them in a simple yet efficient manner. Although it can’t compete with professional display calibration utilities, it is exceedingly useful in its own way.

How to Find and Download Torrents Without any Torrent Client

If you want to download torrents without using any desktop torrent client, Taffybox would be useful. It lets you download torrents using a java applet from your browser.

Other than a browser based torrent downloader, Taffybox is also a torrent search engine. You can search for torrents using the search box and if you know the link of a torrent file, just place it in the search box and hit enter. When the search results are shown, click the green button to start downloading the torrent.

download-torrent-without-torrent-client

Taffybox is free there are no registrations or signups involved. If you are a Firefox fan, read how to search torrents from Firefox.

Download Torrents using Bitlet

Similar to Taffybox, Bitlet let’s you download any torrent file without using any torrent client. Just go to the homepage of Bitlet and paste the torrent meta file url. Bitlet opens a pop up window and starts downloading the torrent in your computer.

download-torrent-uding-bitlet

If you want to give a torrent link for download in your blog or website, Bitlet can be very useful. You can create a direct link of any torrent file using Bitlet code generator and paste the link in your blog so that users can easily download it. They also have a bookmarklet which you can use to download torrent files without opening the Bitlet website. So next time you want to share a direct download link of any torrent file, use Bitlet.

Techie-Buzz Verdict

Both the tools are good but are no replacements of regular torrent clients. One problem with both the services is that the downloads are slow. While you can speed up torrent clients using special measures, there is no way you can speed up web based torrent downloads.

Conversationlist Builds Personalized Twitter Lists for You

Conversationlist-Create-Twitter-ListsTwitter Lists has received widespread acclaim since its launch. Millions of lists have already been created and the number will only continue to increase. Lists are one of the best ways to make sense of all the noise. However, if you happen to follow hundreds and thousands of users, then grouping them into meaningful lists can become a herculean task. Conversationlist is a free service which is trying to make things easier for tweeps like you.

Conversationlist dubs itself as a conversational approach to Twitter lists. The concept behind this service is really simple the people you engage in conversations with are most likely to be the people you are interested in. Once you authorize conversationlist, it will create a new list (called conversationlist) and automatically add any username you mention in your tweets. The lists are rebuilt daily and contain a maximum of 25 tweeps at any point of time. The ones you stop having conversation with are automatically removed.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Conversationlist is a good idea. However, in its current state, it may be too simplistic to be really useful. There is no way to increase the 25 user per list limit. You can’t disable auto-deletion of usernames from the list or adjust the duration of inactivity after which a username will be deleted.

Whether you find conversationlist useful or not will actually depend on your Twitter usage pattern. People who enjoy engaging in conversation with like-minded, interesting tweeps should find this useful. For others, it may be of little use. If you fall in the later camp, you can also check out Favstar.fm’s list builder, which automatically builds lists based on your favorite tweets. Do let us know what you think about conversationlist. Did you find it useful?

ServicesEditor Makes Tweaking and Restoring Windows Services Easy

It is common knowledge that Windows has many built-in services that a common user doesn’t require. Disabling these services can reduce boot times and enhance system performance. In the past, we have covered utilities like Vista Services Optimizer which optimize Windows services for better performance.

Services-EditorMost users tweak services using the Windows Services Editor (services.msc). The trouble with this approach is that every time you reinstall Windows, you will have to edit the properties of every service one by one. ServicesEditor is an online Service Manager which supports Windows XP, Vista and 7. Once you have selected an operating system you will be presented with the list of services for that system including their default startup type. You can change the startup type for any services. Once you are done, ServicesEditor.com will generate a registry file which can be merged with the registry to apply the changes.

Techie Buzz Verdict

ServicesEditor is a robust service which is excellent for tweaking as well as restoring the original configuration of Windows services. The best thing about ServicesEditor is that it saves your configuration as a compact registry file. Not only does this allow you to save your configuration for future use, it also enables you to share your tweaked configuration with friends and family. My only complaint with ServicesEditor is that it doesn’t provide any information what so ever about individual services. Hence, you would need to refer to Black Viper’s services list (or other similar resources).
