Compare Loading Time of Two Websites with Which Loads Faster

Speeding up your website is very important because nowadays search engines take the average load time of websites as one of the factors for ranking. Moreover, faster sites create a good user experience and it’s very essential on the part of website owners to optimize their website for faster loading.

There are several tools to measure the load time of your blog or website, but have you ever compared the average loading times of two websites side by side ?

Which Loads Faster is a nice web service which lets you compare the loading time of any two webpage side by side. Just head over to the home page and enter the URL’s in the text box as shown below:

Hit the “Go” button and the site will split the screen and load both the websites side by side. When both the websites have finished loading, you will be shown the average load time of each and the comparison in percentage. This is very useful, when you are comparing the load times of two websites or may be comparing two pages of your blog to find out which one loads faster.

There is another “Race” feature which lets you compare a series of URL’s in both frames. This will be handy when you are comparing a group or set of pages and want them to load automatically when the previous one has finished loading.

To try the “Race” feature, click the Race link on the site’s navigation menu and enter the “sets” of URL’s one by one

The test results can be shared with anyone using the share button (see example). Thanks to DownloadSquad for the tip.

Find Free Wifi Hotspots with WeFi

[Windows, Mobile and Mac]wifi-ico Since I have a netbook and occasionally take it on the road, I decided to try out WeFi. The WeFi application and web service promises to help you locate wifi hotspots and connect you to thousands of other WeFi users. Here’s what they say about the service:

WeFi is dedicated to helping you find, connect, and enjoy Wi-Fi anywhere around the world. We provide the tools that allow our community to map the global Wi-Fi network. Our dedicated community has already discovered over 60,000,000 access points around the world. Join us today and help us map the next million!

I downloaded the 8mb installation file and started the install process. I found that there are a few places that you might want take a closer look at during the install.

The first installation options default to installing a toolbar and new default search in your web browser. When I see options like these, I nearly always opt out. I hate toolbars and I’m happy with my search providers.

wefi-install-options

Just when I thought I was done with the junk programs they wanted me to install, one more option popped in. I can’t tell you how much I dislike added shopping applications like the Price Gong offer they served up.

wefi-price-gong

After getting through the options above, the software starts installing and you’ll see a cute animation with the little WeFi creature running past store fronts. It’s a little too cute. At that point, I was wondering if this was a serious company delivering a real product.

wefi-cute-install-animation

One final setting popped up after the little running logo. I decided that I definitely did not want to allow WeFi to automatically connect me to networks. I like to look them over before I allow my netbook to connect to strange new hotspots.

wefi-auto-connect-option

The final step was to actually create an account with WeFi. They step you through the sign-up and only require an email address in addition to letting you choose your username and password. Once that’s out of the way, the main WeFi interface finally launches.

wefi-interface

After playing with it for awhile, I decided that I liked the WeFi interface because it was very similar to most instant messenger clients. Below is a video showing you a little bit about how it works.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

I didn’t like the offers for the toolbar, the change to default search and the shopping assistant. However, I did like the fact that WeFi does offer an easy way to discover new hotspots and get in touch with other WeFi users. I have mixed feelings about it at this time, but I won’t tell anyone to stay away from WeFi.

Fake Warnings and Hoaxes on Facebook – Are You Smart Enough to Avoid Them?

joker Every time I hear about a new scam or hoax on Facebook, I have to wonder how people can fall for these. Don’t be fooled, a few minutes of research can save you some embarrassment. Here’s an example of one of the hoaxes that’s been going around.

Fox 4 news reported… ATTENTION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do not join the group that runs currently on facebook with the title “becoming a father or mother was the greatest gift of my life” This is a group created by pedophiles whose aim is to access your photos!!!!!!!…!!!!! Please rotate …this post to all Your Friends on Facebook xx

In truth, there were no groups started by pedophiles. It was all a big hoax, but it got passed along in Facebook and email so often that it took on a life of it’s own. Originally, there were no groups with that name or a similar name, but some other pranksters created similar groups, just to see how much trouble they could start. It even got to the point where people were creating groups to protest the original (hoax) groups. I was tempted to laugh when I read about this hoax, but I’m also sad that there are so many people ready and willing to post stuff like this in their Facebook page or email.

Read the truth about the Pedophile Group Hoax

Here’s another one – would you pass on this picture and description?

Whale swallows man in kayak

kayak-in-mouth-of-whale

Find out the truth behind this photo.

I found out about these hoaxes from an old friend of mine, Brett Christensen. He runs a website, newsletter and Facebook page that reveals the truth and the lies behind many of the rumors, hoaxes and scams you see in email and Facebook.

If you don’t want to be fooled, it only takes a minute or two in a search engine to find the truth. I recommend going to three different sites to perform a quick search before you pass on the next fantastic message you get.

Search Hoax-Slayer

Snopes.com

Scambusters

I also recommend signing up for the email newsletters from Hoax-Slayer and Snopes.

Hoax-Slayer newsletter (monthly)

Snopes newsletter (weekly)

In case you want up to date info, here’s the Facebook page for Hoax-Slayer that Brett maintains. Just post a question on his wall and he’ll probably answer back with all the facts he can find.

It’s not a sin to be fooled by an email or Facebook post. However, you won’t be gaining any friends and credibility by passing on stupid rumors and hoaxes. Take the time to check them out.

I’ve never been fooled by a hoax or a scam in Facebook (or email), have you?

BeeTV – Television, Movie and Sports Recommendation Engine [100 Invites]

Last year, we had featured Criticker -a movie recommendation engine. BeeTV is something similar, but for television shows, movies, sports and news. The Milan based beeTV was founded in 2006, but was launched in the 2008 DEMO conference.

Like most similar services, beeTV asks you to rate a few familiar TV shows and movies upon signing up. Based upon your initial ratings, it then prepares a recommendation stream (called your “Personal Content Channel” or PPC).

BeeTV-Personalised Television Reccomendation

BeeTV’s interface is spectacular. But, that’s not all it has going for itself. The organization is pretty neat. Enter your Zip code and it will churn out recommendation that includes content from your television provider. BeeTV can even help you find shows to watch on your computer, on your mobile phone and on your iPad. What’s more, with beeTV, you can easily filter out the freebies hidden amongst the crowd of premium offerings.

BeeTV released it’s iPhone app earlier today and an iPad app is in the works. It is also working with set-top box manufacturers to bring personalized recommendations directly to your television. BeeTV is currently talking with multiple system operators (MSOs) to integrate their on-demand titles and to connect their set-top-boxes to enable recording and reminders notifications. BeeTV will be hooking up with your cable’s API to allow you to control your set-top-box remotely. In the future, you will be able to record your favorite shows with the push of a button from your iPhone or BeeTV’s web interface.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Bee-TV-Reccomended There is a definite need for services like beeTV. Thanks to the abundance of TV channels and TV shows it is almost impossible to manually keep track of what’s new and what’s hot. BeeTV enables you to stop wasting time, by quickly finding content that you will like. It’s a pity that this service is currently limited to the US. I am sure everyone would love to have a localized version of beeTV for themselves.

Techie Buzz Rating: 4/5 (Excellent)

Invites: Currently beeTV is in closed beta. However, we have 100 invites to give away. Just head over to bee.tv and use the invitation code bee.techiebuzz.

Get Your Free ClipArt at OpenClipart.org

lady-bugI often spend too much time looking for the right image to use in a blog post or web page. My biggest problem is finding an image that I can use without worrying about copyrights. Most of the images you find on the web are not labeled with a clear message that says who it belongs to.

Since I’ve found OpenClipart.org, I think I’ll be saving a lot of time. Everything there is completely free. There are no strings attached. You can use their images in anything you publish.

open-clipart

OpenClipart.org has been doing this since they were founded in 2004. This is what they say about their project:

The usage of the name is to convey connection to Open Source software and culture. Also, the word conveys the concept of the project lowering barriers for participation for submission of artwork, development on the project, use of the site and use of the clip art stored.

If you just want to use the freebie art, you only need to go to the site and type in a search term or use the categories to find what you need.

They also offer several packages loaded with all of the clipart from the entire website. These can be downloaded in a couple of different formats.

Download Clipart

If you are an artist, they’d love to get your help with this project. Here’s how to get involved.

If you’re just an average graphics-challenged person like myself, be sure to tell everyone you know about this cool website.

Call Drop.io and Create a Public Voicemail as MP3

phone-msg-2-mp3 There are many file sharing services out there. Many offer simple free file hosting, however, I don’t know of any that offer as many ways to share files and share ideas as the Drop.io service. I recently received a letter from them that mentioned a cool feature I wasn’t aware of. Here’s the letter:

Few know this, but it’s easy (not to mention useful) to record a voicemail inside a drop.

Here’s how:
1. Start a ‘drop’ with 1-click
2. Inside the drop, hit the button that says ‘create a free number’
3. Call that number and leave a voice message
… that’s it! The message will automatically become an mp3.

Reporters use this function as an easy way to record interviews on-the-ground and podcasters use it for their shows. We like to leave personal greetings on drops filled with photos for our friends and family.

Check out the voicemail we left for you – and leave us a message in return.
http://drop.io/maynewsletter

I can think of several other ways to use a public (or private) online voice mail. There are many other useful Drop.io features you might want to check out. Here’s short video about them:

Here are a few of our previous posts about the Drop.io site and services:

1. Drop.io Extension For Google Chrome

2. Drop.io | A File Sharing Program, which is more than just RapidShare

3. Send 100MB Attachments With Yahoo Mail

4. Drop.io, A Service To Privately Share Your Files

5. Drop.io Extension For Google Chrome

Be sure to let us know if you have some new ideas how to use this or any other file sharing service.

Quickly Scan Any File with 40 Different Antivirus Engines

VirusTotal-icoThere are several online services that will allow you to check files for viruses or malware by uploading the files from your computer. One reason you might use one of these services is that you have downloaded a new program and you want to know if it’s safe to install on your computer. One of the services that I use most often is called Virus Total’.

Virus Total is a free, independent service that will analyze uploaded files with around 40 different antivirus engines. Here is the current list:

AhnLab (V3)
Antiy Labs (Antiy-AVL)
Aladdin (eSafe)
ALWIL (Avast! Antivirus)
Authentium (Command Antivirus)
AVG Technologies (AVG)
Avira (AntiVir)
Cat Computer Services (Quick Heal)
ClamAV (ClamAV)
Comodo (Comodo)
CA Inc. (Vet)
Doctor Web, Ltd. (DrWeb)
Emsi Software GmbH (a-squared)
Eset Software (ESET NOD32)
Fortinet (Fortinet)
FRISK Software (F-Prot)
F-Secure (F-Secure)
G DATA Software (GData)
Hacksoft (The Hacker)
Hauri (ViRobot)
Ikarus Software (Ikarus)
INCA Internet (nProtect)
K7 Computing (K7AntiVirus)
Kaspersky Lab (AVP)
McAfee (VirusScan)
Microsoft (Malware Protection)
Norman (Norman Antivirus)
Panda Security (Panda Platinum)
PC Tools (PCTools)
Prevx (Prevx1)
Rising Antivirus (Rising)
Secure Computing (SecureWeb)
BitDefender GmbH (BitDefender)
Sophos (SAV)
Sunbelt Software (Antivirus)
Symantec (Norton Antivirus)
VirusBlokAda (VBA32)
Trend Micro (TrendMicro)
VirusBuster (VirusBuster)

They keep those engines up to date with the latest virus signatures, and they also offer detailed results from each engine in their reports. Virus Total is available in nearly two dozen languages.

To use this service, you simply visit the web page, click on the file upload button, select the file and wait for it to upload. Once the file is uploaded, you will often have to wait a few minutes for the scan results to appear. If you think that sounds pretty easy to do, you are correct. However, Virus Total now offers an even easier method, the Virus Total Uploader.

After you install the Virus Total Uploader [Windows Only] on your PC, you can right click on a file, then Send tothe Virus Total site.

virus-total-uploader-context-sendto-menu

After a few seconds, your web browser will open up to show you the results of the antivirus tests from Virus Total.

That’s not the only trick that the Uploader has for you. When you launch it from your Start menu, you’ll see three other upload options in it’s interface:

virus-total-uploader-main-interface

  • upload a file by choosing it’s process name
  • select a file by browsing to it’s location
  • type in the URL of a file on the web

Go to the Virus Total Uploader page to get it.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Having a good antivirus program installed on your PC is a must have. The ability to double check files using 40 different antivirus engines is not required, but it sure is nice to have. If you’d like to try this application, I recommend it.
