The dev team has already been able to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 though a tethered jailbreak, however an unlock for iOS 4.3.1 has yet to be released. If you are someone who is waiting to update to iOS 4.3.1 to fix bugs but can’t do so because you have an unlocked iPhone, here is some good news.
The dev team honcho; MuscleNerd, has confirmed that a unlock for iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone will be out shortly with an updated version of Ultrasn0w. He confirmed this through a series of tweets, which read like this:
BTW ultrasn0w needs an update for 4.3.1, so unlockers should wait until that gets pushed out (hopefully also today)
The upcoming ultrasn0w update is *only* for 4.3.1 compatibility. Please don’t read anything else into it!
The ultrasn0w update won’t be a new unlock, but 4.3.1 FW itself breaks current ultrasn0w (unintentionally)
So the Ultrasn0w update will not be a new update but is a patch to fix an impending problem with iOS 4.3.1 that breaks the unlock and is only being updated for iOS 4.3.1. MuscleNerd also said that the iOS 4.3.1 update for Ultrasn0w should be released today.
So good news for you people who have been putting up with iOS 4.3 because of the unlocking problems. Hopefully it should be out anytime now.
The new PwnageTool 4.2 consists of a untethered jailbreak for all the above devices. In addition to allows users to jailbreak their devices, iPhone unlockers can also restore to a custom 4.2.1 IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock. PwnageTool currently does not support iPod Touch 2G.
Well in the case of an HFS volume name on iOS, an untether exploit — as the Chronic Dev Team revealed last week with an untether for the 4.2.1 jailbreak, which had previously been a tethered JB for most recent devices since 4.2.1’s release in November. With their permission, we’ve incorporated their 4.2.1 feedfaceuntether into today’s PwnageTool 4.2. This means iPhone unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock. PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:
PwnageTool also pushes a fix for iBooks by @comex and @pushfix which fixes a bug so that it works as intended with DRM books along with fixing a WiFi problem on Apple TV 2G. All these updates will be available in the Cydia package updates.
AT&T seems to be doing something about the multitude of iPhone jailbreaks and iPhone unlocks which allow users to use iPhone on another network. The most recent thing is sending an SMS to users to upgrade their devices to a latest update available from Apple.
However, don’t fall for the upgrade message, it is a trap. The iPhone Dev team just tweeted that the message sent by AT&T (see above) is a trap and users should not upgrade their devices, specially those who have unlocked their iPhone.
The new update will possibly break the unlock and jailbreak, rendering your device unlockable till an update is available. So please stay away from it if you want to preserve your iPhone unlocks.
The dev team has released a new unlocking tool for the iPhone to unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS. PwnageTool 4.1.3 unlocks iPhone devices with baseband later than 05.13.04. The new hack for the AT+XMPP exploit requires users to upgrade to baseband 06.15.00 before attempting an unlock.
PwnageTool 4.1.3 will unlock devices which includes iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and the 3G based iPad. However, iPad users will have to download firmware 3.2.2 to upgrade their baseband.
Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.
An unlock for iPhone 4 is not yet available, however, this should be available in the next few weeks. Please note that there is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. So this will void your warranty so make your decisions very carefully.
This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1. If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, the new redsn0w will handle 4.2.1 for you (in fact it covers 4.2.1 for all devices, even though some of them are still tethered at 4.2.1 until @comex can work some untethering magic). iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to 4.2.1 should not use this PwnageTool! Update to stock 4.2.1 first, then use the upcoming redsn0w to update your baseband.
Consumers who are using iPhone or any other smartphone which requires you to jailbreak of root your device can breath a sigh of relief. According to new Government rules announced today, jailbreaking, unlocking and installing unapproved apps on your mobile phone/smartphone device is now legal.
Companies like Apple and Google’s Android OS have been restricting users from installing applications that are not approved by them and available in the iTunes Store and Android Market place respectively. However, that will be a thing of the past as users will be able to legally install any app of their choice.
Consumers can also break access controls on their phone in order to switch wireless carriers, commonly known as unlocking iPhone. However, the new rules will still allow Apple to disable jailbroken phones with software upgrades, though this should not be an issue since iPhone jailbreaks are made available for free by the Dev Team for the new updates Apple releases.
The new rules which make jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone legal will take effect Tuesday and will remain in effect for the next 3 years at-least when they are reviewed again. So, starting tomorrow put off your fear of legal issues and jailbreak your iPhone to get most out of it.
Currently sn0wbreeze 1.8 only supports jailbreaking the iOS 4.1 beta based devices including iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G and should not be used by general public. Once again, this jailbreak is only intended for developers, so stay away from it if you are not one.
Ultrasn0w 0.9.3 is available in Cydia stores using the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com. To add a repo go to the Cydia store and add it as a new repository. Read instructions to learn how to add a new repo to Cydia.
Right now there is not concrete news from the Dev Team or other iPhone jailbreak developers as to whether they are working on updating the software to work with iOS 4.1. Nevertheless, it is a bit early to say anything since this is still beta software and Apple may go through several iterations before they release iOS 4.1 to public.
We will keep an eye on new developments regarding Jailbreaking iOS 4.1 and Unlocking iOS 4.1 and post the news as we come across them. Till then keep your fingers crosses and subscribe to our Mobile News to keep an eye on updates.
