Companies Who Walked Out on Google Deals [Failed Acquisitions]

Google, the company and the brand has grown tremendously over the years. It is known best for it’s innovations and best use of technology. However, not each and every technology that Google provides is created by them. They have been purchasing companies, both small and big to supplement their existing technologies and to create new ones.

google_failed_takeover_deals

This approach is of course beneficial, as they do not have to start from scratch and get access to a readymade and proven technology. However, not every company that Google has set their eyes on have accepted the deals. There have been quite a few companies who have rejected lucrative Google offers too.

So who are the braveheart companies who rejected offers from Google? Let us take a look at the companies from what we know. I have tried my best to include most of them, however, if you do know of any other busted deals, feel free to leave a comment.

Yelp

Google’s aim to take over the local search market took a huge jolt when Yelp walked out of discussions. There is still a lot of speculation, whether it was Google or Yelp who actually walked out of the deal. However, the deal is now off the table and you will no longer see a Google-Yelp merger, at-least in the near future.

Lala

Lala is a music company which allows users to stream music online. Though Lala was bought by Apple, there are speculations that Google had tried to buy them out before Apple did. However, Google now have a new deal with Lala to help users discover new music in Google music search

Twitter

has always been a target for the tech biggies including Google, Microsoft and . There were talks held between Google and Twitter for a possible buyout, however, Evan Williams held out splendidly and did not sell under pressure. Twitter now has deals with both Microsoft and Google, and are also making money and profitable.

Skype?

There were rumors going around in 2008 that Skype and Google are in talks for a partnership, however, nothing came out of it. Acquiring Skype would have given a huge boost to Google, however, they do have Google Voice which has taken off in a good way and have also acquired Gizmo5 recently.

Friendster

Friendster was perhaps the first company to not go along with Google. They rejected a deal from Google in 2004. Google then went ahead to create , which is one of the most popular social networking sites in India and Brazil.

Other Notable Failures

There have been other notable failures in the past, which failed at negotiation stages or due to governmental policies, these include:

Are there any other failed Google Deals you have come across? Let us know through your comments.he

Shorten Tweets By Converting To SMS Lingo

Think 140 characters are not enough? If you feel this way, you can shorten your tweets by converting them into SMS shorthand language. If you don’t know what I mean by SMS shorthand language, here are some examples:

– How Are you? changes to How r u?

– I will talk to you later, Gotta go now changes to I will ttyl, gtg now.

If you don’t feel like spending the time to write in SMS lingo, you can simply use Twonvert. Twonvert is a great web app that lets you convert your raw text into SMS shorthand to save you space. Just copy-paste the text you want to convert and Twonvert will convert it for you. It will also tell you how much characters you are saving by converting to the SMS lingo.

Once done, you can either copy the converted text or submit it to Twitter directly by providing your Twitter credentials.

Techie-Buzz Verdict:

Twonvert is a great Twitter tool to help you cram more words in the limited 140 characters. It is easy to use and very productive.

Twitter Acquires Mixer Labs: Now Geolocation is the Future

Twitter just announced that, it has acquired geolocation service, Mixer Labs. Mixer Labs is the company behind GeoAPI.com.

GeoAPI is a service that allows developers to add geolocation data to their apps. With geolocation features enabled, an app can tell the current geographical location of the user. Twitter just launched its geotagging API a few weeks ago. Even though a number of mobile and desktop Twitter clients like Seesmic Web, already support Twitter’s geotagging API, only a small number of users are currently making use of it.

According to the Twitter founder Ev Williams:

The company will be looking at how to integrate the work Mixer Labs has done with the Twitter API in useful ways that give developers behind geo-enabled apps like Birdfeed, Seesmic Web, Foursquare, Gowalla, Twidroid, Twittelator Pro and other powerful new possibilities.

The important thing to note, is that the Mixer Labs GeoAPI, is not tied to Twitter. GeoAPI offers tools, that can take GPS (global positioning system) coordinates and turn them into human readable form. It also offers a service that can find status updates, related to specific places on Flickr, Twitter or YouTube.

After the acquisition, the GeoAPI will continue to work while Twitter figures out how to integrate its geotagging API with Mixer Labs’ GeoAPI in the best way.

Techie-Buzz Verdict:

Recently, several features have been introduced by Twitter, like Lists, Retweet and so on, which made their way into desktop and mobile apps too. But the biggest and most anticipated one is the geolocation service, using which anyone using twitter, can come to know, the exact location of his friends and other people on his network. With the geolocation service fully integrated over the social networking sites, it won’t be necessary for me to update my location with each new activity. I can upload pics to Flickr in New York, post video of my birthday party in the Bahamas, or post my status updates from Mexico, with no extra effort.

In the future, we will see a full integration of all these services (Twitter, Flickr and others) with Google Maps and other related services, and we will be able to know the current location of any of our friends, while we are using a GPS enabled cellphone. Yes, Geolocation is the future.

Only Search The Tweets From Your Friends

Twitter has a great search tool but the results are often too broad and irrelevant. When you search Twitter you are mostly interested in what your friends are saying instead of the whole world. There had not been an easy way to customize Twitter search for this functionality, until now.

Flocking.me is a great new Twitter tool that lets you search your friends tweets only and filters out the rest of the world. To use the tool, simply head over to Flocking.me and sign in using your Twitter credentials. Once signed in, you will see a search page with all your friends listed. Just enter the term you want to search for and Flocking.me will pull up the results from your friends tweets.

You can see the results as a list view, a thumbnail view or even on an interactive map. Flocking.me also takes some of the popular words/phrases appearing in your friends tweets and show them on the top of your screen.

You don’t even have to reload the page to see updates results, Flocking.me will do that automatically.

Techie-Buzz Verdict:

Flocking.me is a great tool to search Twitter for more relevant and focused information. It filters out all the noise and only searches tweets from your friends.

Twitter May Have Finally Reached Profitability

Twitter-ProfitableTwitter has often been ridiculed due to the apparent lack of a business plan. In fact Twitter’s possible business model has been a topic of hot debate. Over the past year, it almost looked as if pundits were obsessed with figuring out/speculating how Twitter will ever manage to make money. Now BusinessWeek is reporting that, Twitter might have finally reached profitability.

We had earlier reported that, Twitter has inked content sharing deals with both Microsoft and Google. While these deals will undoubtedly bolster the concerned search engine’s real-time capabilities, they have also succeeded in pushing Twiter into the black. Twitter is believed to have received $15 million from Google and $10 million from Microsoft. As a direct consequence of these multi-year agreements, Twitter will be able to make a small profit in 2009.

The other important contributor has been a reduction in the bills paid to telecommunication companies. Twitter’s growing clout has allowed them to renegotiate many of the deals at more favorable terms. In fact, this has resulted in Telecommunication bills being replaced by employee expenses as the single biggest source of expenditure. Maintaining profitability in the future will depend on Twitter’s ability to explore new revenue sources and keeping the number of employees in check.

Weighing Scale Tweets Your Weight to Twitter Friends [Stupid Gadgets]

I have seen stupid gadgets, I have seen ones which are useless, I have seen ones which should have been made at all, however, I am not sure which category this one falls into.

twitter_weighing_scale

A French company has developed a weighing scale.. which can tweet your weight to your followers. Now I am not sure whether that it is an innovation or a waste of time.

This weighing scale can also send your weight to a blog or to your iPhone, now that is a real waste of time in the name of innovation. For those who want to know, this weighing scale can connect to a Wi-Fi network and access your Twitter, blog or iPhone. It is developed by Withings, a French technology company, which creates the Internet body scale. Well, this product is for real too and you can buy it for $159.

Could you please weigh in with your thoughts on this please?

Number of Tweets Surpass World Population

Twitter has taken over the world. As of today, the number of tweets are greater than the number of people on this planet.

The popular tweet counting service GigaTweet is showing the number of tweets as 6.83 Billion and the world population stands at 6.79 Billion according to Census.gov. GigaTweet also predicts that the number of tweets would reach 7 Billion in 5 days and   10 Billion in 96 days of time. With 25 Million tweets per day andover a million tweets every hour, this number sounds pretty reachable

This is another sign of the tremendous growth Twitter has been in past few months. However, one should keep in mind that this includes the countless retweets that people do. The original number of tweets might very well be less than 10% of this number.
