Steam Officially Available for the Mac, Portal Available for Free

Yes folks, the day all you Mac fans were waiting for has arrived. Steam, Valve’s digital distribution platform is now officially available for the Mac.
After much speculation & teasing and a Beta phase, Steam was finally available today, about a month’s delay from the original intended release date. Although the launch titles are just 3 – namely Torchlight, Portal & Football Manager 2010 – Valve has maintained that they will add new games to the Mac gaming catalog every Wednesday.

And oh, in case you’re wondering, if you’ve already purchased the games for Windows, using Steam Play you can re-download the Mac versions of the games and continue playing your games using the Steam Cloud feature, which sync save games across multiple systems. In case you haven’t purchased any of those, do note that Portal is available for free till the 24th [ yay! ] and Torchlight is at 50% off. So what’re you waiting for ? Go get ’em!

Torchlight Available for 75% Off on Steam and GamersGate

Remember Torchlight? Yes, that nifty little Diablo-esque action RPG we reviewed. Well, one Steam sale notwithstanding, Torchlight has captured another Weekend Sale on Steam at $5.00. Not wanting to be left behind, GamersGate has put up the game on sale for $4.95 5 cents less. There are the residual advantages and disadvantages of the two, but I’d recommend everyone to go for the Steam version because it has achievements, no DRM and, well, it’s Steam.

The game is an action RPG that takes the better parts of the Diablo series and crafts it with colorful visuals, outstanding sound and an expansive and deep dungeon world. Though most of it is mundane mouse-clicking, it attacks the player’s just a minute moreweakness and thus is very addictive. The game always puts up a new item which on closer inspection is actually a small modification of the original but you buy it anyway. This is a great game for action-RPG lovers, and the price is just right. Go ahead and buy it!

Buy Torchlight from Steam for $5.00 or from GamersGate for $4.95.

Torchlight Review

A cartoony Diablois how you can best describe Torchlight, the digital-distribution only action-RPG (Role Playing Game) from Runic Games. Another way to describe this $19.95 title is Buy it, you will not regret it!.

The Torchlight Load Screen including tips

Coming from a die-hard Diablo fan it isn’t hard to see why this almost-clone of the games (the second for the most part) is so well received. Everything from the title screen, to the inventory to the actual experience is very similar (and in some cases almost the same) as Diablo II. To understand this a bit more, I have broken this review down into short segments and loads of screenshots (with alternate text so that you can hover your mouse and understand the screenie better!)

Characters

Before clicking on the start game button, you must (as in all RPGs) create a character.Torchlight is no different it gives you three premade characters known as Hero Classesand I have tried to fit them in with their closest cousinsfrom the Diablo universe:-

The Destroyer a Barbarian/Paladin hybrid. Brute force with weapons and not brute defense against other weapons. Not much else!

The Destroyer

The Vanquisher an Amazon/Rogue hybrid, capable of dealing damage from afar as a ranged weapons specialist or up close and personal as an assassin.
