5 Free Tools to upload content to your web site

If you have a blog or a web site you will be regularly updating it with content such as images, files, videos etc. There are various ways in which you can update your web site. Here are 5 utilities which make uploading content easy for you and best of all these utilities are free.

The utilities are of two different types one which supports the regular File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and another which supports Secure Copy (SCP) which is more secure than transferring files using FTP. The list also includes two command line tools.

FileZilla is one of the most popular FTP clients around and I started using it around 5 years ago. FileZilla works on Windows NT4, 2000 and XP. It is a light weight client and can be used to manage all of your web sites from one client.

You can easily set up a new web site with FileZilla. To add a new web site go to the File -> Site Manager option

In that add your site hostname and any special port if required. Choose the server type, by default it should be FTP. In the logon type if the server allows Anonymous access then do not change logon type or else choose the other options available. I choose normal where I enter and store the username and password.

You also have an option to specify a default directory where FileZilla local file browser should point to when connecting to a web site. To do this go to advanced options and key in the path to your directory in default local directory box, you can also specify the default directory remote directory that should be opened up when a connection is made to a site.

That’s it you are all set now you can simply drag and drop your files to your FTP directory directly from your computer. It also supports several features such as ability to resume uploads/downloads, firewall support, drag and drop support etc

Replace your windows explorer with something better

I have used a couple of cool windows explorer replacements that adds tabs to to the regular explorer navigation. If you want to switch to a tabbed windows explorer experience then I recommend you one of these below.

If you are one who opens more than a couple of windows to work with files from different folders then QTTabBar is the right software for you.

xplorer ²

xplorer ² lite is a very good alternative for your regular Explorer windows and performs better than QTTabBar. It is a lightweight version of xplorer ² software which is available for commercial usage. It is free for personal and academic use.

ExplorerXP is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non – commercial use) file manager for Windows 2000/XP. Unlike the regular Windows Explorer, it displays the total size of each folder and allows you to browse multiple folders from a tabbed interface.

XPlorer is a substitute for the Windows Explorer, adding multi tabbed features. So it is possible to have lots of locations opened at the same time, while we can manage them in an easy and eficient way.

All of the above softwares help you add tabs and make your navigation easiers I am currently using xplorer ² but have loved QTTabbar which is a awesome replacement for explorer, try out these and let me know how these work for you.

Do let me know your experiences with these softwares. If you have not used these then I definitely recommend you start using it.

Drop.io | A File Sharing Program, which is more than just RapidShare

RapidShare is undoubtedly the most popular and old file sharing network today. Other networks include, megaupload, mediafire, megashare, sendafile and lots more. Their business model is based upon revenue generated from Premium Accounts and selling advertisement space. RapidShare has become so popular that there are many RapidShare Search Engines today, which delve deep into RapidShare to bring file URLs to you for download.

But I have just found a file sharing service, with lots of additional features, which make it an ideal service for file sharing.

Welcome to Drop.io.

It is a place, which allows to store and share any files privately, without accounts, personal registration, or an email addresses. These files are fondly called drops and are not searchable’ and not networked’.

It allows you to set various things like a password, whether others can add to the drop, and how long you want it to exist.

The interesting part is that this space can be used as a community space, where others can add, delete or edit the files available there. For instance, this space can be developed as a sort of communal blog, and give anyone the option to add, annotate or upload different files. And there are lots of ways the files can be uploaded onto this space. They can upload usually via Web, or through email, or through FAX or even leave voice mails by calling a dedicated number with an assigned extension.

The interface is neat and clean, and it is fun to use. However I wish that the entire gamut of services available there should be more searchable, because at first glance, it just looks like any other file storing and sharing service. Yet another problem, which I found that it is not possible to associate privacy features to individual files. These settings are attributed to the entire space at one go.

All in all, a nice web tool.

Win2VNC | Control two desktops with one keyboard / mouse

Today’s online life is very complex.

I have seen pictures of work space of many  computer geeks; full of mess, wires, gadgets criss-crossing one another and fighting for that crucial space. Many of them are so occupied that they have to use more than one computer simltaneouly. For them,  it becomes a pain to switch the keyboard because these are the primary control device, and are required to be placed at most comfortable location.

After coming across one such picture of Al Gore in his office  recently [Pic courtesy labnol.org], see yourself, I was wondering how exactly it is done. At that time I was not aware of the process behind it.

The search brought out not one, but three utilities, which can help you to control more than one desktop screens, with one set of keyboard and mouse. Really useful for tech-geeks.

MaxiVista: It used to  sell for a steep $50, but the latest version runs just $20.96. You can download the trial version for free. It not only allows you to control second screen with the same keyboard and mouse, but you can also drag and drop items from one screen to the other.

Synergy: Synergy is open source  and is  released under the GNU Public License (GPL). However it is differnt from MaxiVista in the sense that it allows you to only control the other screen. You cannot drag and drop items from one screen to the other. Being Open Source, it is free. However, one drawback, which I noticed is that it is not being upgraded for quite some time, may be more than a year.

And the third one is…

Win2VNC: It works fine with Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.

…program will open a small (one pixel wide) window on the edge of your screen. Moving the pointer into this window will trigger the program to take over your mouse and send mouse movements and keystrokes though the RFB protocol to a VNC server running on another machine. When the pointer is moved back towards the opposite edge on the other screen, the mouse is returned to your primary display.

The best part is that it is FREE, like all good things in life.

I am sure there will be more also. Wouldn’t you like to share them ?

Best online storage services that are free

Backing up data is a very critical part of your day to day computer life. To keep your files secure and safe from data crashes you should regularly back up your data.

But how long can you sustain buying expensive backup devices and medias to keep your data safe. Backing up data is a costly affair if you have a lot of data to backup.

This is where online storage services come into the picture using which you can easily backup and access your data from anywhere because it is available online. Gmail Drive is still no where in sight and Microsoft folders disappeared as quickly it appeared.

You can also use Gmail as a backup device for storing your files, that’s around 3 GB of storage space and there is no limit to the number of emails you can create so 3GB multiplied by 10 accounts could get you upto 30GB of space. The only problem is that Gmail has a 10 GB 20 GB attachment limit so you can upload more than that at a time.

Online storage services provide you with free space of around 1 GB and more. I recommend you use the online storage services for backups as most of these are free and provide you with free space to store you data. I had written a post around a year ago which highlighted few free online storage services.
