Spice Launches Affordable Android Mobile Phone, Announces Two Tablets

Last month, we reported that Google is working with manufactures like Huawei to introduce cheap Android handsets in parts of Asia. Following in Huawei’s footsteps, Spice has launched its own affordable Android powered mobile phone in India.

The Spice Mi-300 sports a 3.2 inch HVGA capacitive display with a resolution of 320×240. It runs on Android 2.1 and is powered by the Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset. Supported connectivity options include 3G (HSPA enabled), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The handset features a 5 megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD videos. Although the ROM offers just 156 MBs of space, microSD cards up to 32 are supported. The Mi-300 is now available in stores across India for Rs. 9,990.

Spice Mobile has also announced two Android powered tablets for computing on the go. The first of them is the Mi-410, which is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255. The Mi-410 is a micro-tablet with a 4.1 inch HVGA capacitive screen. The second tablet, which was announced by Spice, is Mi-700. This tablet will run on a Qualcomm MSM7227 chip and feature a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen. The tablets are expected to be launched in October-November.

Spice Introduces 12MP Camera Phone with 3x Optical Zoom

Camera phones have improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years. We have come a long way since the days of VGA camera phones. However, one feature that is yet to go mainstream is optical zoom. Now, Spice S1200 has joined the rank of elite few mobile phones that can brag about optical zoom.

The S1200 features a 12 mega-pixel camera with professional CCD sensor and boasts of numerous advanced camera functions including multiple face detection, smile shutter, auto focus, night vision, anti-shake, xenon flash and 24 preset capture modes. It is also quite capable when it comes to video recording and supports recording QVGA resolution video at 30 fps.

Besides the standard assortment of connectivity options (no Wi-Fi), the S1200 also includes TV out support (cables included), which allows it to be connected to standard television sets.

Speaking on the launch of Spice S-1200 Mr. Kunal Ahooja, Director and CEO, Spice Mobiles Ltd stated, “Photography is emerging as a fine art and expression of creativity. Our latest Picture Perfect series phone the 12MP S-1200 caters to this lifestyle need of good photography on the move”.

Although, optical zoom is possibly the biggest draw of this handset, it is also responsible for the unsightly appearance of S1200. High megapixel count does not automatically ensure great picture quality. However, if Spice’s optical sensor is even half-decent, the S1200 should be a commendable camera phone. At Rs 14,500, it is priced just right for the Indian market.

This statement was made at the launch of Spice Mobiles’ latest 12 MP camera phone. The phone S-1200 is priced at Rs. 14,500. Another phone  M7070 which was launched last year in December is suitable for the budget conscious buyer. Spice has clearly seen a huge potential in the Indian market and is planning an expansion here. It recently sponsored the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week to gain attention and buzz.

If everything goes well here, Spice has further plans of expanding to Africa and other Asian markets. India is currently the optimal test bed for any new technology with its varied levels of users. More and more companies will take advantage of this fact and this will be beneficial for both the users and manufacturers.
