Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, Play and Neo Get A Software Update

Sony Ericsson has started rolling out a new software update for three of its Xperia branded handsets the Xperia Play, Neo and Arc. The software update does not bump the Android version to 2.3.4, but brings a host of welcomed features.

Xperia_Arc

First and foremost, the software update adds a Themes’ section to the handset. There are five themes already pre-installed. Each theme is based on a specific color found on the Sony Ericsson logo. SE has also added xLOUD’ feature, which boost the volume of the speaker. I tried this feature on my Arc, and enabling xLOUD just increased the treble a bit.

Another feature which this software update brings is stereo quality audio recording in HD videos on the Arc and the Neo. The core apps found on these apps have also been updated. The Gallery and Music Player apps have also got minor UI enhancements, along with the launcher which now supports landscape mode. The usual performance and stability improvements are also on-board.

Sony Ericsson is slowly rolling out the update to all the Xperia handsets out there, so please be patient before you get the update via OTA.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Rolling Out In Italy

After a lot of confusion, Sony Ericsson confirmed at MWC this year that the X10 will indeed be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.

Xperia_X10

Sony Ericsson promised to start rolling out the update sometime in late Q2 or early Q3 of 2010. The company has managed to keep its word, and has started rolling out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the X10. At the moment, the update is being rolled out for all the unlocked X10s in Italy.

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the X10 brings with it many new features like Wi-Fi hotspot, USB tethering, Music player with equalizer, Facebook Xperia inside, and better battery life. The usual performance and stability improvements brought about by the Android OS upgrade should also be present.

However, the update will remove certain features like the Mediascape UI. The whole Mediascape UI on the X10 will be toned down to the level found in the 2011 line-up of Xperia handsets.

X10 owners should take a backup of their data before proceeding with the update, because their phone will be wiped clean during the update. They should also not use the Sony Ericsson’s Backup & Restore application, since it won’t work on Gingerbread.

X10 owners in Italy should head over to this link to download and install the update.

UPDATE: It looks like all the region specific site of Sony Ericsson say the same thing. However, when one tries to update the handset using SEUS, it says that there is no new software update. People over at XDA forums are suggesting that the Gingerbread update should start rolling out from Friday in Europe.

Skype For Android Updated With A New UI; Also Brings Two-Way Video Calling

Android users very well know that the official Skype application for Android is nothing but a joke. The app is slow, and does not support video calling, which is one main reason why people use Skype.

A major over-haul of the app was long due, and it has finally landed on the Android Market! I find it a bit ironic since when Microsoft purchased Skype, I gave up the very thought of Skype’s Android app ever being updated.

Skype_Android

The new version of Skype (v2.0) brings with it a whole new, and much improved UI, along with support for SMS. The application now also supports two-way video calling via Wi-Fi or 3G. However, two way video-calling feature is limited to only four handsets at the moment. Those four handsets include the Google Nexus S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and Neo, and the HTC Desire S.

Yes, Skype did not bother to add support for popular phones with front-facing camera like the EVO 4G, Samsung Galaxy S/ S2, EVO 3D, but added them for two phones which are hardly available anywhere.

Hopefully, Skype will soon release an updated version of the application with support for video calling on more Android handsets. Here is the link to the updated version of Skype for Android.
