Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 (Anzu) Gets Slaughtered in its First Preview

The rumors regarding Sony Ericsson Xperia Anzu were correct, for most part. The Anzu exists, and will be launched as Xperia X12 – Sony Ericsson’s next flagship model. The X12 is expected to hit the stores in early 2011, and will (probably) be sporting FroYo at launch. This is a deviation from initial reports that suggested that Anzu will launch with Gingerbread (Android 2.3) onboard. Now, it appears that Gingerbread will be made available as a separate update at some point during the summer of 2011.

Mobile-Review managed to get their hands on an early development build, which was running vanilla Android 2.1. The reviewer found the device to be quite snappy. However, the real question is, how well will the X12 perform once the custom shell (UXP) has been plastered on top of the vanilla Android. The X12 will also feature an twelve megapixel camera with 720p HD recording at 30fps.

Possibly the biggest let downs in the X12 are its display and processor. It will have a 4.2FWVGA (854×480) capacitive display with full multi-touch support. However, Sony Ericsson has decided to continue using traditional LCD displays instead of the AMOLED or SLCD displays used by HTC.

As disclosed earlier, the Xperia X12 will be powered by MSM7230. The processor (45nm) in X12 will most likely be clocked at 800 MHz, and in terms of performance will be quite similar to the current generation snapdragons (65nm). However, the MSM7230 uses Adreno 205 as its GPU unit, which is a significant step up from the previous Adreno 200.

On the whole, the Xperia X12 is a nice update. However, Xperia X12 looks poorly poised to be the flagship model, as its modest processor is no match for TI’s OMAP 4 and Samsung’s Orion.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Anzu Leaked Specs Emerge

xperia x12 anzu leaked

Last week we saw the leaked pics of the Sony Ericsson’s upcoming phone, the Xperia X12 Anzu, but the specs of the device were not available. Recently, the leaked specs of this powerful device has been emerged into the wild. The folks over the Unofficial Xperia X10 Blog has shared the leaked specs of this device. It comes with an amazing 8.1 megapixel camera with HD (720) video recording, 4.2 inch FWVGA Capacitive display and more. Check out the leaked specs of this device below.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Anzu Leaked Specs:

  • 8.1 MP AF with Exmor R (16x Digital Zoom, HD Video recording (720p/30fps) w stereo audio recording support, Pulsed LED, Face Recognition & Tracking in video recording)
  • Built-in 3.5mm (w/ adaptor)
  • Noise Suppression
  • 4.2FWVGA (854×480) Capacitive display (X.LED multi-touch display, Capacitive multi-touch, 16 Million display colour)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • HDMI (type D)
  • Compass
  • Size (125.0 x 62.5 x 8.7-10.9 mm)
  • Battery: 1500 mAh
  • OS: Android Gingerbread

The Android 2.3 powered Xperia X12 Anzu is definitely an impressive smartphone. This handset is expected to arrive in the market during the Q1 of 2011 and it is rumored to come with a price tag of €650 (approx. $880).

Sony Ericsson Anzu – The Successor to Xperia X10?

Sony Ericsson has been surprisingly quiet about the successor to the Xperia X10, it’s current flagship device. Earlier on, there were rumours suggesting that the successor, bearing the codename Cliaro, will feature a 1.5 GHz TI OMAP4 processor. That bit of information obviously didn’t pan out. However, new information about Sony Ericsson’s next high-end device has leaked, and this time around we have pictures, loads of them.

The Xperia X10 blog has learned that the next flagship device is going by the codename Anzu, and is expected to be launched in Q1 2011. It will have a 4.3 inch display, HDMI output, front facing camera, and will be capable of capturing 1080p HD videos. Design wise it will be similar to the Xperia X10, but will be a lot thinner.

The best thing is that Sony Ericsson is expected to ship Anzu (possibly Xperia X12) with Gingerbread onboard. Sony Ericsson has been mauled for their inability to deliver timely updates for the current Xperia line of products. Thankfully, it appears that they have finally learned their lesson.

The hardware specification is still a mystery. True HD video recording capability suggests that it will house a meaty processor; however, we will have to wait for the specifics. The Xperia X10 blog was also told that the display of the new handset is crisp, and the volume level of the loudspeaker has been significantly improved. The new handset might be launched simultaneously with the PlayStation Android phone that Sony Ericsson is currently developing.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 – 1.5 Ghz Processor and Android 2.2

According to the word going around, Sony Ericsson is currently working on the successor to the Xperia X10. The device, which goes by the codename Cliaro, is expected to be announced near the end of this year, and ship in early 2011.

The leaked specifications suggest that Cliaro (possibly Xperia X12) will have TI OMAP4 1.5GHz processor, Android 2.2 (Froyo) and a 4-inch AMOLED 1080×720 resolution screen. The 10mm thick Xperia X12 is also expected to sport a 12 megapixel camera.

The news that Sony Ericsson is working on a successor to the Xperia X10 is not a surprise. However, the resolution being touted by the reports spreading around the interwebs is suspicious to say the least. The use of AMOLED is also surprising. Recently, even HTC switched to super-LCD screens manufactured by Sony due to acute shortage of AMOLED screens. Even though IT168 has been right before, we are putting this firmly in the rumors category until we know more.
