CCleaner 3.0 Adds 64-Bit Support, Secure Drive Eraser, HTML5 Cleanup and More

ccleaner_logoOne of my favorite PC cleanup software; which was also part of my 35 Top Free Software List, has been updated to version 3.0 with several new and exciting features including 64-Bit Support, database cleanup, secure drive wiper among other features.

One of the most interesting features of this PC cleanup is that it now supports 64-bit systems natively which will result in improvised performance on compatible systems. In addition to that, it also has a new HTML5 database storage cleanup for the next-gen HTML specification. This new feature will allow them to cleanup temporary data which have been created by your browsers which support HTML5.

CCleaner 3.0 also adds a new secure drive wiper, which will securely erase the content of any drive without leaving any traces. If you use Internet Explorer 9 or , the new version includes better cleanup options along with support for clearing up files left behind by Microsoft Silverlight.

Oh and the best feature of all, the software now comes with a intelligent cookie retaining feature which will ensure that you do not have to login again to a site for which you have checked an option to keep you logged in for a while. In short,  CCleaner 3.0 will retain session cookies when you do a full cleanupgif. I tested this feature out and it works perfect with Google Chrome.

Find Large Emails In Gmail

is one of the best email providers, however, unlike Yahoo and Hotmail, Gmail does not provide users with unlimited disk quota. Though 7.5GB of email space will take quite a lot of time to fill up, you might definitely fill it up at some point of time.

I have had a problem with two of my backup accounts where database updates are sent thrice a day filling up in a few months. So do you go an buy more Gmail space then? Well, you might want to do that, but what if you could just delete some emails which are taking up space in your account and live with it for another few days.

gmail_run_out_of_space

But finding and deleting large images can be quite a pain. In comes Find Big Mail, a service which will help you find large messages in your Gmail Inbox and label them accordingly. You can then quickly browse through all those emails and delete them  if required to free up space.

How Does Find Big Mail Work?

Find Big Mail requires you to provide access to your Gmail account in order to work. Once you have provided access to it, it will scan your email account and label emails based on attachment sizes. The good part about the service is that you do not require to provide it with your username and password and it works on all the browsers.

Big Gmail Email Labels

Once the service has finished scanning your emails, you will start seeing new labels in your Inbox based on sizes, you will also receive an email with charts which graphically tell you about the amount of space your emails are taking up.

Big Gmail Messages Chart

The service is not instantaneous though and you will have to wait a while before it queues up your request and finishes analyzing your email. Again the analysis will depend on the number of emails you have and how large your account is.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Highly Recommended Service

Find Big Mail is a handy service if you want to quickly delete large emails from your Inbox but don’t have time to scan through them to find them. In addition to that, this service is definitely safe since it never has access to your password.

Quick the service a quick whirl and you won’t be disappointed. Another good thing about the service is that it will also work with your Google Apps account too.

Since this service is only for a one time use, you might want to disable it from accessing your data after it has finished the scan by visiting your Google Profile.

Slim Down and Speed Up Your Computer with SlimComputer

win [Windows Only]

Even new computers have too much junk on them. Many PC manufacturers include special software packages and trial offers that you’ll probably never need. The common term for this stuff is crapware. As time goes on, your computer may also get slower because many different programs add themselves as startup programs. This means that every time you boot your PC, you’ll have to wait while lots of hidden programs automatically start.

In the past, I’ve used a program called PC Decrapifier to get rid of crapware. I also use WinPatrol to keep a close eye on the startup programs. A new program called SlimComputer now offers to do all of this and more.

On first run, you’ll be offered a chance to scan your computer for pre-installed software that you don’t want. All you have to do is to hit the big orange Run Scanbutton to get started.

slimcomputer-first-run

When it’s done scanning, you’ll get the chance to uninstall the programs that it believes are crapware. Be sure to un-check any apps you want to keep, then click the Removebutton to continue.

slimcomputer-remove-apps

After that, the Optimize section (button on left sidebar) allows you to view your startups and services. You’ll find that many of the items listed have a color rating that will tell you if the item is good to keep or needs to be removed.

slimcomputer-optimizer

If you remove things from Startup, you can always restore them later by using the Restoresection, which can be accessed on the left sidebar. There’s not much danger to removing startup applications. However, the next tab, Services, is a little easier to deal with.

There are only two choices when you are optimizing the Services. You can use Original Settingsor you can choose what they call SuperCharged.

Next, you can visit the Uninstaller page to remove programs from your PC. It’s not much different from the Add/Remove applet in your Windows Control Panel, except that they give you a colored rating on each app.

slimcomputer-uninstaller

Finally, there’s an interface called Windows Tools. There you’ll find most of the common tools that you can usually find in your Accessories System menu on the PC.

Techie Buzz Verdict

SlimComputer offers nearly every utility you need to speed up a computer. The only thing missing is a registry cleaner and optimizer. I might hesitate adopting this suite since it’s still a beta version, and there may still be hidden bugs. They might also decide to sell this application once it gets out of beta. It’s certainly better than most of the junk that’s offered on TV commercials.

Manage Windows Services with Portable Services Suite

win[Windows Only]

If you need a fast, functional and easy way to manage the services that run on your PC, take a look at Services Suite, a portable application from RoyalFool.de. Below are some screenshots and a brief description of how it works.

To use it, you’ll have to download and extract it to a folder somewhere on your PC or on a flash drive. It’s offered as a RAR file download, so if you aren’t familiar with RAR archives, you we’ll show you how to open a RAR file.

Once you have it unpacked, all you have to do is double click the file ServicesSuite.exe to start the program.

services-suite-file

When it’s first started, you may have to select your language in order to read the menus. Right now, it’s only available in German and English.

The program interface will list all of the registered services on a PC in a three column format. The three columns are automatic, manual and deactivated, as shown next.

portable-services-manager

In order to change the status of any service, you can click on it and drag it from one list to another. When you are finished making changes, you’ll have to write these changes to the registry by clicking on the check mark icon in the top right of the application window.

portable-services-write-changes

That’s all there is to it. The only problem you might have is if you aren’t a system administrator on the PC you are using. Some services can only be changed if you are the administrator.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

For experienced users, this may not be a huge help. After all, you can easily access the system services using the services.msc applet. However, it’s nice for quick changes and it’s so simple to use. The fact that this app is very small, portable and free, makes it a win on my score card.

Ubuntu Software Center Continues To Make Great Improvements

The Ubuntu Software Center is probably one of the most actively developed feature for Maverick. It now has an updated look with features apps and new apps. It has also got plugin supports and some form of social media integration.

Well, it continues its improvement and now it will handle the installation of .deb file, instead of the old Gdebi. Now, when you click on a .deb file, the Ubuntu Software Center will open.

This is a very good move from Canonical and it will streamline the installation of applications in Ubuntu. However, a concern that some people have been raising is that it would make a third-party .deb file seem like it is from the repository. In the current implementation, there is a warning, but perhaps it would be a good idea to make it more visually distinct – say, a different color background, as people are suggesting.

In a related news, the Ubuntu Software Center has got its first paid application. The application is Fluendo DVD Player and they are selling it for $24.95.
