Google’s Android has been seeing a steady increase in the market share of its devices in the US market. Back in January 2010, the mobile usage report by comScore, put Android’s market share at 7.1%, however, the February 2010 report has shown around 2% market growth for Android, giving it a 9.0%, an overall 5.2% increase since November 2009.
The biggest losers during this period were once again Microsoft and Palm, however, RIM still retained the top position with their Blackberry device accounting for 42.1% of the total US market share. Apple though has remained stable with around 26% of the market share, however, you can expect their numbers to grow because of the recent iPad launch.
For Device manufacturers, Motorola was still the top OEM followed by LG and Samsung, however, Motorola lost around 2% of the market share since November 2009.
In all there were around 234 million Americans with mobile devices out of which 45.4 million users owned smartphones, which is a 21% increase since November 2009. With the flurry of new devices being launched, this number will definitely sky rocket to around 100 million within the next 3-6 months.
Fox Mobile gives a new dimension to the smartphones by introducing Bitbop – a new wireless subscription service that delivers on demand mobile TV and movies directly to U.S. consumers smartphones.
Bitbop’s mobile video subscription service is very simple to use. It provides full-length television programs for streaming as well as temporary download. This amazing service is available for just $9.99 a month. It also allows you to manage a queue of your viewing choices. Bitbop’s service works on most advanced technology handsets like iPhone, almost all Androids and several BlackBerry models.
Bitbop service’s launch date has not yet been announced but it is expected to arrive this spring.
Though this service seems to be very nice, we can’t yet be sure that the carrier networks will be able to cope with 3G bandwidth requirements to provide uninterrupted viewing. Lags in video playback will kill all the joy of watching them. The temporary download feature is not yet quite ready and it might be the only solution for slower networks.
The future of Sony Ericsson definitely does not look good. The company has been facing heavy losses for the past few quarters. The sales of its mobile handsets has also been decreasing day by day and the company has been unable to launch new handsets which are able to evoke interest among the consumers. The company has also taken some serious cost cutting measures by laying off more than 2000 employees till now. Now in an effort to reduce its administrative expenses further, the company is going to shut down six of its offices across the world. The various offices are situated in Chennai, India; San Diego; Kiesta; Seattle; N.C and Sweden.
Sony Ericsson will also be laying off 2000 more employees by the end of this year. The company will be shifting its headquarter from North Carolina to Atlanta as well. A Sony Ericsson spokesperson said that Atlanta was chosen as the new headquarters since it is “a gateway into Latin America.” Sony Ericsson handsets have been losing market share because of the increasing popularity of smartphones among the consumers. The hopes of the company now reside on its upcoming Android based Xperia X10, Xperia Pureness and Symbian based Sony Kurara handsets, all of which definitely have an impressive spec sheet on paper.
Sony Ericsson had recently launched its first 12MP Camera phone in the market Sony Ericsson Satio. The phone has a impressive spec sheet but has been pulled off from the stores due to software instability issues.
