There are many file sharing services out there. Many offer simple free file hosting, however, I don’t know of any that offer as many ways to share files and share ideas as the Drop.io service. I recently received a letter from them that mentioned a cool feature I wasn’t aware of. Here’s the letter:

Few know this, but it’s easy (not to mention useful) to record a voicemail inside a drop.

Here’s how:
1. Start a ‘drop’ with 1-click
2. Inside the drop, hit the button that says ‘create a free number’
3. Call that number and leave a voice message
… that’s it! The message will automatically become an mp3.

Reporters use this function as an easy way to record interviews on-the-ground and podcasters use it for their shows. We like to leave personal greetings on drops filled with photos for our friends and family.

Yahoo Mail has been constantly improving over the past few months with the addition of several applications that make your life easier while connecting with people, sorting your emails and more.

But a constant problem with online email has been that they do not allow users to attach files which are larger than 10 or 20 MB, which makes sharing pictures and videos that much more harder, of course you could always use online file sharing services to share larger files.

Yahoo Mail has worked towards resolving the problem of sharing large files up-to 100MB by tying up with Drop.io.

Using the new Attach Large Filesfeature you can attach multiple files as long as they are 100MB or less, the recipient of the email can download individual attachments or choose to download them all at once.

Definitely useful and reliable. Considering that Gmail is still stuck with 20MB, Yahoo mail could definitely be a good alternative to share large files.

Most email providers today have a measly attachment limit of 20 MBs at the most, anything above this limit will be promptly bounced back to the sender, however you can still send large files as email attachments by uploading them to one of the several free online storage websites and including a link to the file in your email.

Though that solution may not be entirely neat and may require multiple actions, Acrobat.com today announced a free add-in for Microsoft Outlook that will allow you to send large files from Outlook. This feature is pretty similar to the Yousendit add-in we had told you about earlier.

Once you have installed the Acrobat.com add-in on your computer, you can send large files by uploading them to your Acrobat.com account, which provides users with 5GB of free space.

To upload files to Acrobat.com and include a link to it in the email, click on the Acrobat.com tab in outlook and sing-in to your Acrobat.com account.

Once you have successfully signed in to your Acrobat.com account, you can upload files and insert links into the email.

You can also insert links from files that already exist in your Acrobat.com account.

Once you have uploaded or inserted the attachments into the email, the Acrobat.com add-in will add the links to the files into the email.

Clicking on the links inside the email, will allow users to download the attachments from Acrobat.com, thus allowing you to attach files up-to 5GB in a single email.

However like everything else, Acrobat.com’s add-in has a big problem, it does not allow users to attach MP3 and video files, which may be due to privacy concerns they have for sharing licensed content through their service.

Overall, the Acrobat.com add-in can come in pretty handy to workaround the 20MB attachment size, email providers have in place, but alas for the MP3 and video restrictions, this could have been the best way to send large attachments from Outlook.

So you have created a document that you want to send across to your friends or colleagues, but why waste time opening up your email program, attaching the file and then sending the email to the recipients you want to?

YouSendIt a service that allows you to send large files as email attachments, albeit they don’t exactly attach a file but just include a link to the uploaded file stored on their servers, making it easier for anyone to download the files without being limited to the mail server limit of 20MB attachment size.

Though YouSendIt is a online service, they have made quite a few applications that allow you to send files from your desktop, a Microsoft outlook add-in that allows you to easily send large files, the latest application they are providing is pretty useful since it will allow users to directly send files from within Microsoft Office documents.

Once you have clicked on the Send by YouSendIt link in the menu it will launch the YouSendIt Express program using which you can send the document to people you want to share it.

To start using YouSendIt from Microsoft Office you will have to sign up for a free account, using which you can attach and send files up-to 2GB.
