Google Celebrates 25 Billion App Downloads On Play Store With A 25 Cent Sale

Last year, Google celebrated 10 billion app download in the Play Store by kicking of a 10-cent sale in the Play Store for 5 days. Today, Google announced that it is celebrating the 25 billion app downloads from the Play Store by offering some of the very popular games and apps from EA, Rovio and other popular developers for only 25 cents. The sale will kick-off later today, and will continue until the next five days.

This time, Google will also be offering some special collections like 25 must have movies, 25 albums that changed the world, or 25 banned books, all at discounted rates.

The blog post from Google also states that the Play Store now has more than 675,000 apps and games, which is nothing short of amazing. More than 15 billion app downloads in less than a year (9 months) is nothing short of amazing, and shows how far the Android ecosystem has evolved.

Last year, some Android developers raked in more than 10k$ in the 10-cent app sale, and this year promises to be no different.

Gameloft’s Modern Combat 3 Available In The Android Market For Only 0.99$

A few days ago we had reported that Gameloft is offering all of its high-quality HD games for Android handsets for a mere $0.99 in the Android Market. The only game the company did not put on sale was its recently released Modern Combat 3  Fallen Nation, which is without a doubt, the best game the company has ever released for Android devices. The usual price of Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is $6.99 in the Android Market.

Gameloft had earlier stated that it will put up Modern Combat 3 for sale in the Android Market for a day for $0.99, and that day turns out to be today! Yes, Modern Combat is available for only $0.99 in the Android Market. Before buying the game, make sure that you have at least 1.37GB of free space on the internal memory card of your phone. Also make sure that yo have ample amount of free RAM, otherwise the game can lag quite a bit.

Interested Android users can buy Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation from here.

Recettear Sells a Hundred Thousand Copies. Follow Up Hinted

It’s no secret that I adore the little pseudo JRPG called Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale. I call it pseudo because it is not, in fact, a total JRPG. Instead it has this incredible idea of what if the player was an NPC?. More accurately, what if the player was the shopkeeper to whom the heroes of JRPG games came to buy swords, shields, magical amulet and pink toffees from?. Yes, that is exactly what Recettear allows you to do, and while the idea itself may sound half-baked and prone to cause easy boredom, the game is not. It’s been the darling of many reviews, coming from the Japanese stock and westernized by Carpe Fulgur.

banner_rec

So when a recent Steam sale pushed up their sales to a hundred thousand copies, they are bound to be so happy that they would have stopped developing and gone on a collective vacation, right?

The head business dudeof Carpe Fulgur does not think so. Andrew Dice explains in a blog post about what the sales mean, what they do not mean and what ramifications these figures would have in the future. One of the most important points raised was that the sale was done at an extremely low price. Recettear was sold in a pack for about $1 (five games for $5). Since Valve prefers developers more than publishers, the lion’s share of the profit went to the Japanese developer EasyGameStation. Not that Carpe Fulgur is struggling right now (they are doing very well, but they need to release another game within the next year).

Lastly, Dice very cheekily hints at the next game that would be released by Carpe Fulgur for the world: Another EasyGameStation title called Chantelise.

In all the future of westernized JRPGs looks bright indeed! Yayifications!

Green Man Gaming Sets Up Double-Money Weekend

Remember Green Man Gaming? Yes that oddball new digital distributor that allowed you to trade-in your played games for cash-vouchers that could be used to buy other games? Well, they still seem to be alive and kicking.

greenmangaming

They have started off with a double-money weekend. Simply put, if you trade in your games before Sunday, the 5th of September, you will get double the cash value for the trade in. As they say in their flyer:-

Trade-in any of your existing Green Man Gaming titles this weekend and get double the trade-in value for the game!
Build up credit on your account with our exclusive Double your Money on trade-ins offer, and treat yourself to one of the many new releases that will feature on Green Man Gaming in the lead up to Christmas.

Still confused? Well, mostly every game on Green Man Gaming has a trade invalue that is specified before buying. It’s usually around half the price of the game.

gmgtradein

Once you finish playing the game, you can choose to trade it inas if it it was a physical medium. Trading it in adds the trade-in value to your account from where you can choose to buy more games. This weekend, every trade-in that you do effectively doubles which basically means that you get your entire initial amount back. How is that beneficial for their sales? I have no idea. Especially since they are stocking what are effectively Steam gift codes.

Their website is a little lacking in presentation and their business model seems kinda lossy. Nevertheless, they stock some pretty good games that are worth the buy. Do check the GreenManGaming sale today!

Impulse Charity Sale is Live

Stardock’s Impulse digital distribution website has always been one of the premier sites to buy games and other software content provided by Stardock and a variety of other publishers online. Like most other digital distributors, Impulse also caters to a wide audience of gamers and provides special discount sales now and then to boost sales. These sales usually comprise of one or two games or publishers over the weekend or so.

childsplayimpulse

However, since the 30th of August, Impulse has over a hundred games on sale with several publishers lined up in its sale queue. The reason being that this is no ordinary sale! Stardock has partnered with Child’s Play Charity an organization that provides toys and games for sick children in over 60 hospitals in organizing this charity sale called Play for the Cause. A portion of each purchase you make on Impulse between the 30th of August and the 10th of September will go to Child’s Play Charity. The Humble Indie Bundle was also organized along with Child’s Play Charity, if you remember.

The Dragon Age Bundle, King’s Bounty: Gold edition and the THQ Ultimate Bundle are all available for cheap on this sale! Among the publishers are EA, Meridian4, Paradox Interactive, Kalypso Media, the 1C Company and THQ.

So which game will you be buying in the Impulse + Child’s Play Charity sale?

QuakeCon Sale on Steam!

It’s QuakeCon time! Yes, that conference that claims to be the Woodstock of gaming (4 days of Peace, Love and Rockets) is one of the largest gaming parties in the world and is run almost entirely by volunteers. It is gaming in its pure, unadulterated-by-nonsensical-business self. QuakeCon’s principal partner, Id Software (the developers of Doom and, of course, Quake) provides support for what is possibly the largest LAN Party on the planet.

quakecon

However, the business part of the gaming industry will take good care of its sales while this party rages on. Valve’s Steam digital distribution portal has racked up a bunch of Id and Bethesda games in its QuakeCon Steam Sale that any respectable fan of action games absolutely needs to check.
