Tethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.1 Imminent; Still No iPad 2 Support!

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has just confirmed via Twitter that his team will soon be releasing an untethered jailbreak for all iTouch devices running iOS 4.3.1.

At the moment, the only jailbreak available for iOS 4.3.1 is a tethered jailbreak released by DjayB6. MuscleNerd also confirmed that the jailbreak is in its final stage, with the team busy in ironing out some bugs.

This new jailbreak will work for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G/4G, Apple TV 2G and the original iPad. However, like the DjayB6‘s tethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1, this new jailbreak method will also not support the iPad 2.

iPhone 4 owners who have unlocked their device via Ultrasn0w, are recommended not to update their iOS version and use this jailbreak. If they do so, their baseband version will be upgraded and they will lose their unlock.

The jailbreak is based on an exploit found by i0n1c, and will be available for both Windows and Mac users via Redsn0w and PwnageTool, respectively. Hopefully, the iPhone Dev Team will release the updated version of PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze within a week or so.

PwnageTool 4.2 Released for Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak/Unlock and iBooks Fix

The Dev Team has released an update for the popular PwnageTool which will jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.2.1 on 3G, 3GS, , iPhone 4-Verizon, 3G, , and AppleTV 2G.

The new PwnageTool 4.2 consists of a untethered jailbreak for all the above devices. In addition to allows users to jailbreak their devices, iPhone unlockers can also restore to a custom 4.2.1 IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock. PwnageTool currently does not support iPod Touch 2G.

Well in the case of an HFS volume name on iOS, an untether exploit — as the Chronic Dev Team revealed last week with an untether for the 4.2.1 jailbreak, which had previously been a tethered JB for most recent devices since 4.2.1’s release in November.  With their permission, we’ve incorporated their 4.2.1 feedfaceuntether into today’s PwnageTool 4.2.  This means iPhone unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock.  PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:

PwnageTool also pushes a fix for iBooks by @comex and @pushfix which fixes a bug so that it works as intended with DRM books along with fixing a WiFi problem on Apple TV 2G. All these updates will be available in the Cydia package updates.

Download PwnageTool 4.1 To Jailbreak iPhone 4/iPod Touch

The iPhone Dev Team has finally released PwnageTool 4.1. The application uses Geohot’s boot rom exploit to build custom IPSW/firmware files for most of the iTouch devices out there. By creating custom firmwares, users can update their iTouch device to the latest firmware without upgrading their baseband. This will help them in preserving their unlock and update to the latest iOS as well.Pwnage_Tool

As of now, PwnageTool 4.1 supports the iPhone 3G, 3GS (Old as well as new boot roms) running on iOS 4.1 and the iPhone 4 running on iOS4.1 as well. The Apple iPad running on iOS 3.2.2 and Apple TV 2G running iOS 4.1 are supported as well. The iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G running iOS 4.1 are supported as well.

At the moment, PwnageTool 4.1 is available only for Mac. Users can read more about PwnageTool 4.1 here.

Apple iPhone 4 Jailbroken By Geohot

Geohot is one of the most popular guy in the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreak/unlock scene. He has successfully managed to hack the PlayStation 3 as well. However, Geohot has been mum right from the time the Apple iPhoneclip_image001 4 was announced, and released.

Now after quite a few months, Geohot has updated his blog. In the blog post, he says that he managed to jailbreak the iPhone 4 the day it landed on his doorsteps.

Here is what his blog post said:

Got one of these in the mail today and figured I’d give it a shot.

As far as a release goes, it probably won’t happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool.

Again, please don’t ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.

As it is clear from the blog post, Geohot has clearly said that he won’t be stating a release date. Users can jailbreak iOS4 on iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch using PwnageTool 4.0.

Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS/3G And iPod Touch With PwnageTool 4.0

Just a couple of days ago Apple had released the iOS4 for its iTouch line-up. Yesterday, the folks behind redsn0w released an update of their application which allowed users to hacktivate iOS4 on their iPhone 3G, and jailbreak iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2G. Now the folks behind PwnageTool have released an updated version of their application.

The PwnageTool works only on previously jailbroken iPhone 3GS having an old bootrom. The application does not support the latest bootrom. Therefore, users who are still stuck on jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1.2 can now upgrade to iOS4 via PwnageTool 4.0. They will retain their jailbreak after the update. iPhone 3G owners can update to iOS4 by restoring an ipsw created from PwnageTool 4.0 via recovery mode or DFU mode.

Sadly, the Pwnage Tool 4.0 does not support the iPhone 2G, the original iPod Touch, and the iPod Touch 3G. Here is the link to the post   with detailed instructions for different iTouch devices from Apple.

Jailbreakers Don’t Upgrade to iTunes 9.2 For "Spirit", Ok for redsn0w and PwnageTool

Apple just released an update to iTunes in the form of iTunes 9.2, however, if you jailbreak your iPhone, here is some advice from the dev team.

Don’t install today’s iTunes 9.2 if you plan on using Spirit for fresh JB (but it’s fine for PwnageTool & redsn0w users)

Do no upgrade to iTunes 9.2 if you are using the Spirit jailbreaking tool, however, if you are using redsn0w or PwnageTool to jailbreak the iPhone you can safely upgrade to iTunes 9.2.

Apple will also be releasing iOS4 for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch shortly. will be made available as a free update and can only be installed using iTunes 9.2, so if you have used Spirit to jailbreak your device you will have to wait till an update is available to it.

However, the iOS4 has already been jailbroken using PwnageTool Bundle. In addition to that, there is also a iOS4 unlock through Blacksn0w RC2.

iOS4 GM Jailbroken On iPhone 3GS With PwnageTool Bundle

Yesterday was a big day for Apple at , with Steve Jobs unveiling the and also renaming iPhone OS 4.0 to iOS4. However, less than a day after iOS4 was made available to developers, there is already a jailbreak for iOS4 on 3GS.

iOS4 Logo

The 3GS iOS4 bundle can be used to jailbreak devices running iOS4 GM on an iPhone 3GS. The bundle has been created by msft.guy who is also known for fixing the blacksn0w unlock for iPhone OS 3.1.3.

If you are a regular iPhone user, you might as well stay away from this as this is only for a GM release of the iOS4 and may not work on the final iOS4 version considering that Apple still has time to fix the loopholes in it. However, this just goes to show that a jailbreak for iOS4 will be available once it is released.

If you are an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G or iPod Touch users you will be eligible for a free upgrade to iOS4 on June 21st.

Not convinced yet? Check out a video of a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running iOS4 GM below.

PwnageTool 3.1.4 to Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 2G/3G/3GS with OS 3.1.2

The dev team has released PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X which supports the 3.1.2 firmware release for iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.

This latest version of PwnageTool can jailbreak iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (1G and 2G) running on iPhone firmware 3.1.2. The custom .ipsw firmware provided by PwnageTool, can be used to update the firmware to 3.1.2, and unlock the phone, so that it can use any carrier or SIM card.

Following devices are currently supported by PwnageTool 3.1.4:

  • The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
  • The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)
  • The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool.
