Sony’s New PS3 Slim Model To Have A 40NM GPU

The Playstation 3 from Sony is arguably the best console – hardware wise – in the market currently. The PS3 has a Nvidia RSX GPU with 256MB of GDDR3 memory and, a Cell Microprocessor designed by IBM.PS3 RSX GPU With the launch of the PS3 Slim Model, the Cell CPU of PS3 moved to a 45nm manufacturing process. This led to a decrease in power consumption, lower temperatures, and reduction in the cost of production.

Now Playstation University reports that the new PS3 Slim RSX GPU will be based on the 40nm fabrication process.  At the time of its launch, the PS3 RSX GPU used the 65nm fabrication process. The shift to a lower fabrication process has many advantages including the reduction of the Yellow Light Of Death on the PS3s. Thanks to the shift in lower fabrication process, the cooling unit of the new PS3 Slim has also been redesigned. It is now less complex compared to its predecessor.

It is reported that the drop in power consumption is around 15%. The power supply has also seen a weight reduction, and now weighs in at 412g. The original PS3 power adapter used to weigh 815g. Quite a few chips have also been removed from around the Nvidia RSX GPU, leading to a lower cost of production.

The main benefit of the shift to 40nm fabrication process is the lower cost of production. The new PS3 Slim, even though cheaper by 100$, will allow Sony to earn profit on every console sold. Until now, Sony has been incurring losses on every PS3 they have sold.

PS3 Latest Firmware Removes Support for Linux and Other OS

The latest firmware release for PS3 from Sony will remove the “Other OS” feature. The update is scheduled to arrive on the 1st of April. Do not go by that date because Sony has confirmed that this is not an April Fool’s Day joke.

The update which is scheduled to arrive on Thursday this week will not be mandatory though. It will be an optional upgrade but those using the older firmware will be devoid of many features of the latest 3.21 firmware. Sony says it has released this update for security concerns.

Though, after the PS3 hack by the famous iPhone hacker, this looks more like an insecurity concern.

For those going for this update,

  • You will not be able to use another OS on your PS3.
  • No more playbacks of unsupported formats like MKV.
  • No more interesting PS3 hack reports.
  • No more fun.

If you are planning on not using this update,

  • You will miss out on all the security Sony will probably talk about.
  • You will not be able to play the latest games requiring the latest firmware.
  • You will not be able to play Blu-ray discs.
  • You will not get access to PSN (PlayStation network) anymore.

Gaming consoles like PS3 are a power juice machine and are used in researches as well. The removal of Other OS feature will affect many more communities apart from gamers.

CryENGINE 3 in Stereoscopic 3D Shown Off by Crytek

Crysis broke damn near every computer that was thrown at it when it was released. For good reason too it was the most realistic looking game ever developed and it spawned thousands of Real vs. Crysisphotographs and the Yes… but can it play Crysis?internet meme. The European developers of Crysis, Crytek GmbH (Crytek), have found phenomenal success with the release of their games with jaw-dropping graphics and fluid gameplay that keeps you begging for more.

In this year’s Game Developer Conference (GDC), Crytek showed off its new engine, the CryENGINE 3, coupled with stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) screens. The result was pure awesomeness. Being the fastest and the most robust renderer, CryENGINE 3 serves the PC, the PS3 and the XBox360 with the most photorealistic indoor rendering, extraordinary real-time effects and the impact of being in the game rather than playing it. Using S-3D technology, this involvement with the game became that much more real.

Carl Jones, Director of Global Business Development at Crytek, said

Over the past few years, S-3D technology has emerged as one of the key trends both in movies and games. With CryENGINE 3, developers will have the ability to create their content in 3D on all platforms. There are basically no longer any limits to a designer’s creativity. CryENGINE 3 features many innovations to accelerate development, cut production costs and ensure teams are able to maximize their own creativity without delays

The cutting-edge technology of Crytek just got sharper.

Sony Acquires Media Molecule, Sets Sail for More LBP

LittleBigPlanet was perhaps the best platformer for the PlayStation 3. As Joystiq reports, Three million copies, two million levels, and one Game of the Year edition laterSony decided to acquire the small UK-based developer Media Molecule. Their sugar-coated website chirpily proclaimed the engagement with Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS). With two BAFTAs, and over 90 other gaming awards, Media Molecule is on a roll as Sony has promised to further their franchise and also help develop newer titles.

Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios had this to say about the interest of SCE WWS.

Since they burst onto the gaming scene, Media Molecule have proved to be a truly exciting and innovative studio, who have proved their world-class credentials with the creation of the incredible LittleBigPlanet. SCE WWS is all about creating ambitious, innovative and ground breaking games, traits that Media Molecule clearly have.   To bring them into our family proves our dedication to creating fantastic new experiences that we believe will cement our position as industry leaders.

It is heartening to see Sony create a core group of enthusiastic developers to keep the PS3, PSP and the PS2 thriving in the worldwide market. The inclusion of the teams of such brilliant and innovative games such as LittleBigPlanet portends good for Sony as well as the loyal gamers, not to mention the developers!

GeoHotz Publishes PS3 Hack/Exploit

A few days after George came out with the fact that he had hacked into the read/write memory of the PS3, he has decided to release exploit and let it run wild, most likely because he hit a dead end. This was the same guy who triggered a flurry of jailbreaking software.

In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.

Well, while many might actually say that it was not right for him to release the exploit, it also gives Sony a chance to look at the exploit and patch their system. After all, they have kept it secure for over 3 years, and this will be a challenge to patch and keep it safer for the next few years too.

To download the exploit and learn more about it (too technical for non-geeks) visit this blog post by George.

GeoHotz Team Hacks PS3

After 3 years, 2 months and 11 days, the GeoHotz team has finally been able to hack into the PS3. The hack took 5 weeks to complete, but they finally were able to have read/write access to the entire PS3 system memory.

The team was able to hack Hypervisor, also called as the Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) which provides a virtualized system that makes it possible to run multiple operating system.

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1.

3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

According to them, the exploit they discovered is not yet patchable, however, being the kind hearts that they are, they will not be revealing the exploit to anyone.

Just goes to show that, no matter how secure a system you build, hackers will always take their time to find exploits in them, no matter if it takes them weeks to do it.

Read more about the PS3 hack here. We will update you when further details become available.

Watch Netflix Movies On Sony PlayStation

Netflix is trying to hook up with as many platforms as possible for its movie streaming service. As of now you can instantly watch a movie from Netflix on your computer, Xbox, DVD player and Televisions.

The next portal that is being added to Netflix streaming service is Sony Playstation 3. The streaming would start next month and anybody who has a Netflix membership to instant movies will be able to watch movies using their PS3. Netflix is continuously increasing the number of instantly watchable movies which makes good sense with their strategy of partnering with more and more platforms.

Unfortunately, this is only for US as instantly watchable movies are not available outside of the US yet. With an estimated installed base of 9 million users, PS3 would give Netflix a good push-up in terms of growth.
