Mass Effect 3 Preorder “Offer” Ends a Little Too Quickly on Origin

I have a feeling that EA has a ginormous amount of insurance against Origin’s failure. If I take that as a sound basis then all of EA’s moves with respect to their digital distribution platform would start to make sense. Currently, it just makes them look so silly that the phrase “what are they stupid?” becomes redundant and obvious. Remember the (US/Canada only offer, as pointed out by Sathya) Mass Effect 3 preorder offer at Origin? The one that would give away a free copy of Battlefield 3 to all those who preorder the game? Well, it turns out that EA has “run out of the limited copies of Battlefield 3” and will be ending the offer 3 weeks early. They ran out of digital copies.

At least, that is what I suspect, because the deal was on until the 5th of March. It has stopped now and those who had preordered the game will receive the Battlefield 3’s key by March 8th. That is right, they have to wait until Mass Effect 3 is released and then get the key for the existing game. Apparently, EA has done this before – with the Battlefield 3 preorder which came with a free copy of Dead Space 2.

I have no idea who decides these things at the head office of Origin, but it’s certainly not someone with a lot of sense. I mean, there’s not even an apology or a blog post explaining the issue.

Preorder Mass Effect 3 on Origin to Get Battlefield 3 Free! (US or Canada Only)

It seems EA will go to any lengths to make sure that their Origin digital distribution system is widely accepted. Joystiq reported that if you preorder Mass Effect 3 on Origin (that is, only for PC), you will get a free copy of Battlefield 3 right on your Origin game library. Before you pucker up your face and go “ewwwww Orrriiiggiiiiiiiin ewwwwww”, consider this – for the price you get two games – one of which is brand freakin’ new, and the other one which is quite recent.

Origin has been on the receiving end of a lot of bashing from fans of EA games who specifically did not like being forced into yet another digital distribution store. The fact that Origin tracked your computer information, was buggy as hell and that EA had the worst customer support in the entire solar system did not help its case. However, EA’s marketing team is hot in pursuit of its customer’s wallets. They did the same thing with Battlefield 3’s preorder, giving away a copy of Dead Space 2 free with it.

Keep in mind that Mass Effect 3 will need Origin to play even if you buy the box from a brick-and-mortar store. This way, you are not directly contributing to a lot of paper and plastic usage and also get to keep much of your gaming library online. So, will you be preordering Mass Effect 3?

EDIT: This is only for the customers in the USA and Canada. Aw shucks.

Motorola Xoom Available For Pre-Order in India For Rs 35000

The Motorola Xoom, the first Android tablet to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb which has been launched in the US since weeks, has finally shown some signs of coming to India.

Infibeam, a popular online store in India, has made the Motorola Xoom available in India for pre-order. It is priced at Rs 35,000 or $775, based on current exchange rates. It’s a bit surprising that the tablet will be available in India at a lower price than in the US where it is priced at $800. According to Infibeam, the Motorola Xoom will be released in India on 10 May 2011, and will start shipping in 3-4 days after the launch.

The Motorola Xoom is a very good Android tablet, and presently the only decent competitor to the Apple iPad 2. It has received good reviews but is priced a bit high, compared to the Apple iPad 2, which starts at $499, the same as the iPad. It is rumored that a Wi-Fi only version of the Xoom is in the works, and will cost substantially lower, closer to the $500 mark.

The Motorola Xoom has a 10.1 inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It is powered by a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 1 GB RAM and comes with a 5 MP camera. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity and comes with 32 GB internal storage.

FACT: Portal 2’s Pre-Order Advert is Hilariously Cute

Portal 2 is going to be the best First Person Shooter (FPS) to come out this year. Or so I hope, for I really really suck at judging a game genre in which a hundred games are released every year. However, I am pretty sure Portal 2 will be the funniest FPS to come out this year, mostly because it takes itself too seriously (on purpose) and is ridiculously silly at times.

header_292x136

Take, for example, this advertisement for Portal 2‘s preorder that is going to hit the developer’s (Valve) digital distribution store Steam very soon. Released on Valentine’s Day, the ad mocks the concept of gifting ideas for the female species.

Okay, that’s about as far as I’m allowed to say without spoiling the entire advert for you. The thing is that it’s done very well (and probably within Valve’s Source engine, judging by the way things moved when… erm… other things exploded). Watch the video here!

However, contrary to what the video says, Portal 2 is not available for preorder. At least not from my country (and not from my random Tor IP either). Is this another one of those Valve Time debacles? Is this a sick joke from Valve’s side, as we poor mortals refresh the Portal 2 page, hoping for a preorder? Is this the end of the world??

No, it’s probably just a mistake by the Portal 2 PR team. It’s alright everybody; we don’t need to do a flash protest here. Move along.

Preorder The Witcher 2 on GOG.com

A DRM-free, AAA, new title on GOG.com? Yes! We decided to promote this highly-anticipated RPG by our sister company CD Projekt RED as a one time special.

thewitcher2

At their web conference, the people over at CD Projekt decided to show their loyalists some love in a very unique way. It was almost as if the monks of GOG conferred with each other and decided, in perfect Monty Python style, and now for something completely different.

In the conference the release date was announced as May 17th 2011, and the contents of the Collector’s and Premium editions of the game, as well as some preorder details. One of these preorder details was that the game could be purchased from their sister project: GOG.com, the premiere DRM-free digital distribution service.

Although the preorder page at GOG is as of now showing a 404, the tentative details that emerged from their post are that it would feature a 10% discount as well as a free download of any one of the premiere RPGs in GOG’s catalog. The preorder will also entail instant access to some bonus contents of the game.

Also, it seems like you do not have to pay upfront for the preorder how that would work out is still in the dark because of the missing page.

triss

For me, this is the sweetest deal imaginable and I’d jump as soon as I could. Hopefully the missing page will be reinstated soon!

Update: They have taken down the announcement page as well. Stay tuned for further updates!
