[For newbies: Personas for Firefox is a feature in the browser  Mozilla Firefox that allows a user to select simple-to-use themes, known as "Personas," more easily than normal themes.]

The reality of Browser Ballot Screen

Windows 7 Browser Ballot Screen went live for European Union, and as expected Microsoft is not ready to lose the game so easily. Microsoft is tracking user clicks and the algorithm to decide random appearance of browsers is also being criticized.

Now, Download Squad has revealed another fact about Browser ballot screen: 5 out of 7 ‘secondary’ browsers featuring in ballot screen use Microsoft’s Trident rendering engine! A comment posted by richquick in a forum has attracted attention towards this fact. Avant, Green Browser, Maxton, Slim and Sleipnir use the Trident engine, and hence 6 (including IE) out of 12 (i.e.; 50%) browsers provided through the Browser ballot screen are powered by Microsoft technology.

Firefox, Flock and K-Melon run on Gecko, the open source browser rendering engine developed by Mozilla. Moreover, Sleipnir provides an option to switch to Gecko, and Maxthon is planning to support WebKit in future.

Google Chrome gets Geolocation capabilities

Google Chrome dev channel has integrated geolocation APIs. It will help “location-aware” websites to track visitor’s geographical information and serve content accordingly.

Firefox Personas Are Coming To AMO Soon

Mozilla has decide to upgrade Personas by migrating the entire gallery to addons.mozilla.org (AMO). Moving to the AMO will integrate Personas with the Firefox ecosystem to a greater extent. Featuring in AMO will enable many existing AMO features with the Personas; like ratings and reviews, usage statistics, designer profiles for developers, support for more languages, tagging and searching etc.

Mozilla is also planning to add more new features to the Personas, like:

• Theme capability
• Dynamic Personas
• Personas for subwindows
• Self hosted Personas, similar to recently introduced “Self hosted Add-ons”

Browser backups allow us to carry our complete browser settings and data anywhere. This is done by syncing content from our browser to over a cloud storage which is accessible from our particular accounts. This feature is present in Opera as Opera links and now we have official support for Weave Sync. If you are still wondering what Weave is,

Weave is a free add-on for Firefox that syncs your data — bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs, Personas and stored passwords — across multiple PCs running Firefox and supported mobile devices.

Currently, Weave is available as an add-on but it will be officially a part of Firefox from later this year. Weave once installed, will not interrupt your browsing experience with annoying prompts but works pretty much in the background. Weave syncing can be done on the Mozilla server as well as a server of our choice.  Weave Sync works really fast and restoring a saved online backup is a matter of around half a minute.

This release has been long awaited. Though, the next release of Weave Sync, version 1.1 will feature the syncing of add-ons as well. This makes Weave a complete backup solution for all our Firefox settings. To download Weave Sync version 1.0, visit this link.

To mark the release of the Mozilla Firefox 3.6, WordPress has created two brand new personas  for Firefox.  In case you haven’t checked out personas yet, they are like themes for your Mozilla Firefox browser. You can switch between personas to quickly change the look and feel of your browser.

The two personas released by WordPress are Vintage Press and InkWell.

This persona is inspired by the style of the old-time printing presses.

This persona portrays a well-used piece of paper decorated with splashes of color. It’s got some nice colors and, musical notes to add a new flavor to the design.

Personas are the lightweight version of themes. All they consist of are two pictures one for the header and one for the footer and some changes in the Firefox menu text. Since they are so easy to make and share, there are countless Personas now for Firefox. Since we are in the business of making everything Christmas themed this time of the year, here are some fabulous Christmas Personas for Firefox!

Christmas Angel Choir

A very simple and white Persona with three small and pretty angel-lings praying in the top right. Cute!

Blue Christmas

There seem to be quite a few blue-based Personas. This is one of them with a Blue Christmas tree and Merry Christmaswritten across the header.

Christmas Green-Pink

Pink instead of red and Christmas symbols all across the striped header and footer. Funky!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so why not get into the mood early? Mozilla has added 52 Thanksgiving personas for Firefox, which you can easily add to the browser.

You will need to install the Personas extension before you can make use of the Thanksgiving themes. Once you do that, you will be able to change between different Thanksgiving themes without having to restart the browser.

If you are using Personas, a lightweight skin changer for Firefox and are a Harry Potter fan, Warner Bros have released new Harry Potter and Half-Blood prince personas to coincide with the July 15th premier of the movie.

Currently there are 4 personas available in the series, you can see them in action below.

The good thing about using Personas over themes is that you can apply the changes without having to restart the browser.

You will need to install the Personas before you can make use of styles for your browser.
