Nokia ‘Ovi Music Unlimited’ Service Shut Down

Last year, Nokia launched the Ovi Music Unlimited’ service which allowed users to download unlimited number of songs for free for a period of 1 year via the Ovi Music store. Users could get access to this service if they purchased any of the Comes with music’ branded Nokia handset. However, today Nokia has announced that will be shutting down their Ovi Music Unlimited’ service.

The folks over at NokiaUsers contacted Nokia regarding this matter and the company has confirmed that they will be shutting down the Ovi Music Unlimited service. However, the Finnish giant won’t be shutting down the service in all regions of the world. In India, China and Indonesia, Nokia will continue offering the Ovi Music Unlimited service. In Brazil, Turkey and South Africa the company will offer the service with a reduced timespan of 6 months.

In other regions of the world, Nokia will stop offering the Ovi Music Unlimited edition handsets. Nevertheless, users who still use the Ovi Music Unlimited service can continue to do so until their original time period of the service is valid.

One of the biggest disadvantages of   Ovi Music Unlimited service was that the songs were not DRM free. This meant that users could only listen to the songs downloaded from the Ovi Music store on their handsets or on their PC using the Ovi Player. Also the songs offered for download were of very low quality (64Kbps AAC).

Except for Ovi Maps I don’t think any other Ovi service from Nokia has met with success. Time for Nokia to think upon their ‘Ovi’ strategy.

Unfortunately, Nokia’s comes with music’ isn’t DRM free yet. That means if you bought handset like Nokia 5800 Comes with Music and download from the millions of track available, you won’t be able to transfer it to any other handset or PC. However, did you know that OVI store now serves up to 1.5m downloads a day? With Nokia announcing its rebranding and rolling out of DRM free music, that number is just about to climb the Everest.
