Get the Right Tools to Conquer Your Day and Seize the Night!

Hey you! Yeah you, the one burning the candle at both ends. Between homework, friends, family, and the occasional party here and there, you barely have time to grab a meal. What you need my friend are some tools to help you out. With the innovation of Lenovo® IdeaPad U Series Ultrabook™ laptops and some cool apps, we’ll have you ready to conquer your day and seize the night!

Take Copious Notes with Evernote

Let’s face it, your life is moving fast. You don’t have 30 seconds for your laptop to boot up when you’re 5 minutes late for class. The professor is well into their presentation by now. With an IdeaPad Ultrabook™ that resumes from sleep mode in less than 2 seconds, you’re in business. Now all you need is a good note taking program. My favorite note taking software is Evernote! We have mentioned this software numerous times on this website and it is worth mentioning again. This software transcends the boundaries of the PC by being available as a desktop download, iOS or Android app, and also on the web from a browser anywhere in the world. Evernote is free with certain data limits per month. I have yet to hit any limitations. One of my favorite features is the ability to create notebooks so I can divide up my notes into categories. You can also take a picture of handwritten notes on a paper or whiteboard and Evernote will translate the written notes into searchable text. You can download Evernote for free at

Avert Disaster with Dropbox

Dropbox is another must-have application for the person on the go. The last thing anyone needs is to lose a critical document. Dropbox is a great way to protect your important files and make them available to you on any of your devices. You can download Dropbox simply by going to and downloading their free software. You get 2GB of free storage and if you refer friends, you get an additional 500MB per user up to 18GB. What I love about Dropbox is its simplicity. It creates a folder on your computer. Any file that you put in that folder is synchronized to the web and stored on Amazon’s secure servers. Those files are now accessible via a web browser anywhere, or from your smartphone or tablet as an app. You can share folders with other Dropbox users or utilize a public folder option to share a link to a file with those you don’t want to share an entire folder with. A really nice feature is the ability to restore previous versions of a file. This is great if you accidentally overwrite an important file. Just go to your Dropbox website and restore previous versions. Crisis averted!

One thing that has to be considered when you’re on the go is connectivity. We live in a connected world and we like to have instant updates. Even the aforementioned programs are at their best when they’re connected. That is another reason to consider the Lenovo IdeaPad Ultrabook™. They have a smart technology that syncs your email, IM, and social networks even in sleep mode.

The Art of the Invitation

The day is almost done, but there is so much to do tonight! The party starts at 7PM, but you forgot the invites. No problem, just download the FREE image editing software You can download it at This free image editing software rivals the extremely expensive photo editing suites, with all of the familiarity of the Microsoft products you’re already familiar with. Pictured below, you can see the invitation I created, complete with a silhouette of an image I found on the web. It took me about 5 minutes. OK, so I am not a graphic artist, but I think you get the point. You can have a lot of fun with this software and it is free.

Make Sweet Music with Audacity

Audacity is another free program that I wouldn’t do without. You can use Audacity to record tracks and edit music. This is perfect for making music clips to go along with a presentation, or to make a remix of some of your favorite songs. You can also import audio files from your smartphone when you record meetings or class discussions. Audacity is extremely robust with all kinds of effects and filters for your music.

Be the Life of the Party With VirtualDJ

Now that you have the crew together, you’re going to want to blast the music. You can have the power of a club DJ right at your fingertips with VirtualDJ. Free for home use, VirtualDJ is a cool way to DJ your party. It too is a very robust software with a lot of capabilities. There are paid versions of this software as well for the more serious DJ. They will integrate with turntables and projectors.

Apple Working on 15 Inch Ultra Thin Mac Notebook

MacRumors has reported that Apple is finishing up work on a brand new 15″ Mac notebook in a form factor similar to the current generation of Macbook Airs. TUAW reports that this new laptop, along with a 17 inch version, will hold the Macbook Pro branding.

Apple has made some significant changes in its laptop line in the past couple years. First came the original MacBook Air, which changed how we thought a laptop could look. With the most recent update, the Air has replaced the old White MacBook that was the long standing low end Mac laptop.

A large number of us in the industry now expect the standard features of the MacBook Air to make their way to the high-end MacBook Pros. The key items that are mentioned are the integrated SSDs and the lack of optical drives. Those two changes make it possible to take a large amount of the size from body of the computers.

These changes would mark a dynamic shift in Apple’s attitude towards physical media. While it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Apple to completely ditch a format (floppy disk), that would mean skipping the BluRay altogether. However, due to the popularity or the thin machines, it would make sense for Apple to slim down the MacBook Pros.

The timing for the supposed ultra-thin notebook is still unknown. Apple did just release new versions of the MacBook Air a few weeks ago. The MacBook Pro line was just refreshed in February, so any release for that product would have to be at least towards the end of the year.

Evernote Introduces Note Links, Copy Notes; Now Link Your Notes from Other Notes

evernote_logoOne of my favorite all-device software Evernote has released a really awesome update. This update allows users to interlink notes inside other notes or software; copy link for multiple notes and also copy notes and paste it wherever you like.

The new Note Link feature will allow you to create a link for a particular note and then add it to any other software including Evernote itself. This new feature will dramatically improve how you create and maintain notes in future.

Evernote Link Notes

Take for example, you are doing a research for a party and want to create a list of recipes you want to cook. Now, you can create each recipe individually and then include it in your party planning note through note links. This will keep your party planning list clean and allow you to quickly access those recipes with the click of a link.  You can also use this feature to create a index of similar notes which want to refer to as part of your research. Note links can be accessed on Windows, Mac OS X, and .

Another important new feature in the updated Evernote is the ability to copy notes and place them wherever you like. You can copy notes and create a new note or paste it another notebook and so on.

Evernote has also added several new features in this update which include:

  • Snippet View – Allows you to view notes as snippets and provide useful information without opening the notes
  • Note Browsing History – They have added back and forward buttons for easy navigation of recently browser notes
  • New Note Menu – Now has all the new note options
  • New exporting options for windows (windows only)
  • Drag and drop text and images inside a note to desktop or other notes (windows only)
  • Disable PDF Preview (windows only)

Overall these additional new features to Evernote makes the note-taking software a really useful one. You can download the latest version from the Evernote site or go to Help -> Check for updates to update to the latest version of Evernote.

Chrome OS Launch in 2011? Rumors of November Launch are Dead

Google ChromeGoogle’s Chrome OS cloudoperating system may be close to release, but it’s slower to launch than previous rumors suggested. (see video: What is Chrome OS?)

We reported the rumors of November launches for a Chrome OS Tablet and Chrome OS Netbooks and Smartbooks. However, during the recent Web 2.0 Summit, all that Eric Schmidt (Google CEO) would say about it was the software is coming out in the next few months.   Since that’s the case, Google has definitely missed the upcoming Christmas shopping and we won’t see Chrome OS until the beginning of 2011.

If you are curious, here’s the latest peek at the Chrome OS wallpaper and screensaver.

Naturally, these images could change any time before the actual release.

Some people believe that the delays in Chrome OS are due to Android being used in more and more devices. Some say that there isn’t a big demand for a cloud OS that depends entirely on web apps. For a good example of a cloud OS, see Jolicloud.

For those wanting a live preview, you can run this new OS from a USB stick by using the Chrome OS builds by Hexxeh.

Indians Use More Notebooks (and Netbooks) Than Desktops [Report]

ITOPS – an IT Hardware study and research report in India released by MAIT – the apex body representing India’s IT hardware has come out with Computer Hardware sales figures for the year 2009 2010. The reports compare sales figures of various computer hardware and peripherals to that of the previous years.

Notebook sales graph

The graph above shows the sales figures for notebook computers (and netbooks) for the last six years. If you take into consideration the last 4 years, you can clearly see that the laptop (notebook & netbook) sales have definitely grown at a very healthy pace. While 850k notebooks were sold in 06-07, the sales numbers tripled over last 4 years to 2.5 million units. (via

Desktop Sales graph

The graph above shows the desktop sales. Although the laptop sales volume per year is nothing as compared to the Desktop sale volumes, but the graph clearly shows that there has been no growth in the sales of desktops from past years and the sales remain steady. (via

No doubt, the increase in usage of notebook has come at the expense of desktops, but it is a good sign that Indians are gradually moving into the mobile world. Notebooks are more energy efficient than desktops and prove to be more useful too!
