“World’s Largest” Stop Motion Animation Created Using Nokia N8

What else could be a phone used for? A record breaking result? Well, it has already. Using a Nokia N8, Sumo Science and Aardman hold a Guinness Record for creating the largest stop-motion set stretching over 11,000 square feet of Welsh sand.

Stop motion is an animation technique or a cinematic process that is used to makes static objects appear as if they were moving. The technique is generally used in clay-animation. It works by moving objects slightly and shooting it in different frames. When you playback the frames, the illusion of fluid motion is created and the objects appear to move by themselves.

The short film titled, Gulp, tells a simple story of a fisherman going about his daily catches and gets swallowed by a larger predator. Shot on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales, every frame of this stop-motion animation was shot using a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The film has broken a world record for the “largest stop-motion animation set”, with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

Gulp - World's Largest Stop Motion Animation

Co-director Will Studd said: “The film was a huge test of planning and coordination with mother nature. We were incredibly lucky with conditions and tide times sometimes we got our final frame for the day just as the waves crashed in around our set.”

Watch the short film here:

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how it was made:

Earlier in  August 2010, Nokia hired Aardman to create the world’s smallest stop-frame animation. The film was shot using a Nokia N8 with a macro lens.

Symbian Anna Update To Be Available For Download By End Of August

Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop has just announced at the recently concluded Nokia Connection event that the existing Symbian^3 based handsets will be getting the Anna update in August.

Nokia will start shipping the current bunch of Symbian^3 handsets (N8, E7, C7, C6-01) with Symbian Anna pre-installed beginning from July. Existing Symbian^3 handset owners need to wait until the end of August, to download the update for their handset. Yeah, that’s how Nokia respects its loyal users.

Symbian Anna will be bringing some much needed changes to Symbian^3, in a bid to make it more competitive with iOS, Android and WP7. First and foremost, the update will bring a new web-browser with a much improved performance, along with support for split-screen text-input. The update will also bring a portrait QWERTY keyboard for easier typing.

Other new features include updated icons, performance improvements, new version of Ovi Maps with simpler and quicker search function, email enhancements, hardware accelerated encryption and a new version of Nokia’s social client.

Nokia is already shipping Symbian devices based on Symbian Anna including the recently launched Nokia E6 and the X7. So, I cannot possibly think of any techinical’ reason as to why they delayed the Anna update for the Nokia N8, E7, C7 and the C6-01.

Nokia Releases PR1.2 For N8, C6-01 and C7

Nokia has released a voluntary software update for the N8, C6-01 and C7 smartphones aligning them with the current offerings on the new E7. The aforementioned Symbian devices will be bumped to PR1.2 while the same software is referred to as PR1.1 on the recently launched E7. The main purpose of the update is to address an issue with Mail for Exchange synchronization with servers running Exchange 2010 with Service Pack 1. In addition to bug fixes, the update brings along a new version of the Ovi Store client and adds subway, train and tram locations, real time traffic, safety alerts, updated POI as well as improved search and location sharing functionality to Ovi Maps.

The update is available to unlocked devices and will come bundled later with the upcoming PR2 software for customized operator subsidized phones. Since this is a voluntary update, no software will be pushed to handsets and users must explicitly check for updates on their device for completing an OTA update (WiFi and cellular are both supported) or can check via the Nokia Software Updater which is part of the Ovi Suite.

Nokia Discussions forums has more details and frequently asked questions about the update as well as some discussion of the forth coming PR2 update to all Symbian^3 handsets.

Increase Nokia N8 Home Screens To Six With A Custom Firmware

Nokia’s first Symbian based touch OS S60v5 features only one home screen unlike many other touch based OS like Android. With Symbian^3, Nokia increased the number of home screens to 3, which users could fill up with a total of 18 widgets.

However, most of the Android phones ship with up to 7 different home screens, which a user can personalize according to his or her choice. Now, the Symbian modding community has cooked up a custom firmware for the N8, which increases the total number of home screen on the device to 6.

Below is a video of an Nokia N8 in action with six home screens :

The custom firmware also includes the latest version of all the system applications including the music and video player. The custom firmware also includes the available camera mods for the N8 including the continuous Auto-focus in video recording along with 30FPS. The jpeg image save quality has also been increased to 100%.

N8 owners can flash this custom firmware on their handset by using Phoenix. The full steps and change-log of this custom firmware can be found here (It’s not in English though).

Best Mobile Apps Of The Week for iOS, Android and Symbian – #8

Welcome to the eight edition of Best Mobile Apps of the Week for iOS, Android and Symbian. First of all, I would like to apologize to our readers as I did not post the Best Mobile Apps for the last 2 weeks. I had to give my Android phone to the service center, and was using a dumbphone for nearly two weeks.

In this edition of Best Mobile Apps of the week, I will introduce our readers to an awesome eye-candy widget for your Android homescreen, a new unlock screen for you Symbian handset. For iOS owners, I will tell them about an app that will allow them to wake up their PC remotely!

Below are the Best Mobile Apps Of The Week For iOS, Android and Symbian :

Wake (iOS)

As the name suggests, Wake’ enables iOS users to remotely wake up their PC. The app uses WOL Wake On Lan feature which is found in nearly all PCs and Macs computers. Users need to make sure that the WOL’ feature is enabled on their PC. They can do so from the BIOS of their PC.

The app is designed to work with both iPhone and iPad. This app is an extremely useful one for users who want total control on their PC, when they are away from it. iOS owners can purchase Wake’ from the App Store for $0.99 from here.

Maze Lock (Symbian)

In the last edition of BMATW, I introduced our readers to Nokia Bubbles. The app allows users to unlock their phone in a fun and yet efficient manner. Today, I would like to introduce our readers to Maze Lock from ThinkChange.

Below is a video of Maze Lock in action :

Maze Lock for Symbian is similar to the pattern unlock option found in Android 2.1+ handsets. The app is configurable to quite an extent and allows users to change the lock screen background, the date and time display style etc. The app supports all the latest Symbian handsets from Nokia as well as the older S60v5 based ones like the X6 and 5800.

Symbian owners can download Maze Lock for free from the Ovi Store.

Honeycomb Clock (Android)

The tablet version of Android Honeycomb looks stellar! The whole Tron like theme and animations definitely look very cool! Well, Android handset owners are not going to get the next version of Android with all these eye-candies anytime soon. Until then, they can get the Honeycomb look on their phone by using a Honeycomb theme for ADW Launcher.

Along with this, they can download and use the Honeycomb Clock widget from the Android Market. This widget replicates the awesome looking clock widget as seen in Honeycomb OS. Unlike the clock widget in Android 3.0, Honeycomb clock comes in multiple color choices for people who don’t like the blue color.

A free as well as a paid version of this widget is available on the Android Market. Android handset owners can download the app from here.

Nokia N8 Running PR 2.0 Firmware Caught On Video

It was late last month that Nokia released the PR 1.1 update for the latest Symbian based handsets including the N8, C7 and C6-01. The PR 1.1 update hardly brought any noticeable changes to the end users.

Nokia has stated that the PR 2.0 update for the latest Symbian handsets will improve some of the heavily criticized aspects of the phone including the web browser and the text input mode system.   Now, the folks over at MyNokiaBlog have managed to get their hands on a video which shows an N8 running on PR2.0 firmware.

Below is the video of a Nokia N8 running PR 2.0 firmware :

The video shows an updated version of the in-built mail client on the N8 along with an updated browser. The new browser has an updated UI and also supports tabbed browsing.

The new portrait QWERTY keyboard which will be included with the PR2.0 firmware is also shown on the video. The Timed Profile’ feature has also been made a bit more accessible and users can select the option right from their homescreen.

The PR 2.0 firmware is expected to come out sometime in March or early April, so Nokia still has time to add new features and improve the performance of the device.

Nokia N8 And C7 Shipping With Defective Screens?

Nokia has been facing a lot of criticism for nearly all of their moves including the highly debatable and the much controversial Nokia-Microsoft deal. Irrespective of all this, there is no denying of the fact that the latest Symbian (former Symbian^3) handsets from Nokia have been selling in decent numbers.

The Finnish giant managed to sell nearly 4 million N8’s in the last quarter of 2010 and the C7 is also selling in decent quantities. Both these handsets the N8 and the C7 use an AMOLED screen, with the latter featuring a CBD (ClearBlack Display) as well. Now, some N8 and C7 owners are reporting that the screen on their handset(s ) is having some red-purple color tint and poor color gradients issue.

Apparently, the issue is a hardware one and not a software one or a poor color calibration of the screen from Nokia. The issue is not a widespread one but quite a sizeable number of N8/C7 owners are facing the same problem.

Here is a link to a thread on DailyMobile about the AMOLED screen color problem on the N8. Users can read more about this problem and check if their N8/C7 has the same screen problem or not, here.

Nokia has not made any official statement regarding this issue until now, and if the issue is a hardware one, I doubt that they will!
