Nokia Releases PR1.2 For N8, C6-01 and C7

Nokia has released a voluntary software update for the N8, C6-01 and C7 smartphones aligning them with the current offerings on the new E7. The aforementioned Symbian devices will be bumped to PR1.2 while the same software is referred to as PR1.1 on the recently launched E7. The main purpose of the update is to address an issue with Mail for Exchange synchronization with servers running Exchange 2010 with Service Pack 1. In addition to bug fixes, the update brings along a new version of the Ovi Store client and adds subway, train and tram locations, real time traffic, safety alerts, updated POI as well as improved search and location sharing functionality to Ovi Maps.

The update is available to unlocked devices and will come bundled later with the upcoming PR2 software for customized operator subsidized phones. Since this is a voluntary update, no software will be pushed to handsets and users must explicitly check for updates on their device for completing an OTA update (WiFi and cellular are both supported) or can check via the Nokia Software Updater which is part of the Ovi Suite.

Nokia Discussions forums has more details and frequently asked questions about the update as well as some discussion of the forth coming PR2 update to all Symbian^3 handsets.

Nokia N8, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01 PR1.1 Firmware Update Out

Beginning from today, Nokia has started rolling out the PR1.1 firmware update for its new Symbian (formerly Symbian^3) handsets like the Nokia N8, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia C7.

The new firmware update will improve the performance and stability of all the three handsets along with fixing some bugs. Other changes in this firmware won’t be visible to the end users, but will be helpful to developers.

Here is the official change-log from Nokia itself :

  • Meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations;
  • Maps integration in email, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite.
  • For Nokia N8 users:
    a. New Quick Office 6.4 editor version, which offers editing possibilities and allows zooming in & out in Word documents.
    b. Three high quality games will also be preloaded on new devices Need for Speed Shift, Real Golf and Galaxy on Fire. (In some countries, Need for Speed is replaced with Asphalt 5). For current N8 users, these are available for free from Ovi Suite & Ovi Store.

Owners of any of the latest Symbian handset can update the firmware on their handset using Nokia Software Updater or Nokia Ovi Suite. They can also update the firmware on their handset directly via OTA (Over-The-Air).

Symbian is way behind Android and iOS in certain departments including a dated UI, extremely bad text input system and a pathetic web browser. Nokia has promised to fix most of these shortcomings in future firmware updates.

However, this PR 1.1 firmware update does not improve any of these aspects of the phone.   Seriously Nokia, it’s high time you do something which will be appreciated by both – the general public and bloggers.

Nokia C6-01 Starts Shipping

Nokia has started shipping its third Symbian^3 device on the market beginning from today the Nokia C6-01. The C6-01 is the cheapest Symbian^3 handset from the Finnish giant. The phone sports a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with the new ClearBlack display (CBD) technology. This new technology from Nokia is apparently capable of rivaling Samsung’s Super-AMOLED screen. The phone also features 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS, microSD card slot (expandable up to 32GB) and accelerometer. Nokia_C6-01_1

The back of the phone packs an 8MP snapper with auto-focus and dual-LED flash to assist night photography. The C6-01 is capable of recording videos in 720p resolution as well. The phone is powered by an ARM11 680MHz processor and packs 340MB of internal memory and 256MB of RAM. The phone also has free worldwide navigation through Nokia’s very own Ovi Maps.

The C6-01 is one of the greenest and eco-friendliest handset from Nokia as well. The phone has been made from bio plastics and recycled metals. Readers should not confuse the C6-01 with Nokia’s C6-00. The latter is a slide-out QWERTY based S60v5 phone.

Yeah, confusing naming scheme! We know!

Readers should keep in mind that this is the Nokia C6-01 which was announced today. Nokia really needs to stop confusing people with their weird naming schemes.

Nokia C6-01 Details Surface

The Nokia C6 still has not been launched in many countries and Nokia is already working on its successor. GSMArena reports that the C6 has got a successor in the form of the Nokia C6-01. The C6-01 will feature an 8MPNokia C6-01 autofocus camera at its back, along with a dual-LED flash. Along with this, the back cover of the phone has been redesigned.

Apart from the above said changes, the C6-01 is similar to the Nokia C6 in all respects. It will still be running the old and out-dated Symbian^1 (S60v5). I wonder why Nokia is working on a C6 successor when the handset still has not been launched worldwide. Also just an upgraded camera and a redesigned back cover don’t make the C6-01 a worthy successor to the C6.

Even though no information about the RAM and the processor used in the C6-01 is available, I hope Nokia upgrades them. Otherwise, I would suggest readers not to buy this phone.
