Nokia has started rolling out a new firmware update for their first ever S60v5 powered handset, the Nokia 5800. Considering the handset was launched more than two years ago, its commendable of Nokia to keep on releasing firmware updates for the phone.
The new firmware update (v60) is a pretty major one, and brings a host of new and some much-needed changes. First and foremost, the browser has been updated to the same version as the one found in Symbian Anna based phones. The new browser is much more fast and stable compared to the previous version, which frankly was totally unusable. The overall performance of the system and stability has also improved. The lock screen has also been updated, and users now need to Swipe the screen to unlock the phone.
Nokia 5800 owners who have already installed the firmware update reported a faster Gallery app as well. The firmware update also includes Nokia Maps (v3.06 Build 637), along with Qt 4.07(3). The Nokia Store bundled in this firmware carries the version number 1.16. Other notable changes in the new firmware include more free RAM, and increased volume while playing back music. The update does remove emoticons support from the messaging app though.
The new firmware update is already available for download via OTA, and weighs in at 7.2MB. Alternatively, users can also use Nokia Software Updater or Nokia Suite to update the phone’s firmware. If the firmware update is not already available in your region, please be patient as Nokia is gradually rolling out the update.
Nokia has released a new firmware update for its highly popular S60v5 handset the Nokia 5800. The new firmware update is numbered v52.0.007 and improves the performance of the device by a huge margin. The firmware update also improves the touchscreen response of the device along with an improved Wi-Fi connection and an updated version of Ovi Maps (v3.04).
The kinetic scrolling of the handset has also been improved and Nokia have also added the turbo manifest theme effect. After the update, the phone also auto-rotates faster. The performance of the Gallery application has also been improved. The RDS bug which affected the handset after the v40 firmware update has also been fixed.
Nokia 5800 owners can update the firmware of their device either by using Nokia Software Updater (NSU) or via OTA (Over-The-Air). Even though the handset has UDP, users are recommended to make a backup of their device data before proceeding with the firmware update.
The Nokia 5800 was the first Symbian S60 v5 based phone from the Finnish giant. Nokia was heavily criticized for the clunky and out-dated S60 v5 UI. However, the 5800 sold like hot cakes all over the world, and still does, thanks to its irresistible price and features like Free Walk and Drive navigation. Due to its popularity, the handset is also very popular among the modding/developer community. Custom firmwares for the 5800 were out for quite some time now.
However, the folks behind PNHT have now managed to port the Nokia C6 firmware over to the 5800. Except for a few differences including the side slide-out QWERTY keyboard on the C6, the internals of both the phones like Processor speed, RAM are totally identical. Users who are interested in installing the Nokia C6 firmware on their phone can check this thread over at PNHT forums.
The Nokia C6 firmware is also compatible with the Nokia 5530. Kudos to the folks at PNHT for their hard work!

UPDATE: The new firmware also enables kinetic scrolling in the web browser of the phone. Sadly, the web browser does not have the option to go in full screen mode now. Quite a strange move by Nokia here.

Nokia has pushed Python for S60 2.0 update via the built-in App update utility for Nokia 5800 and the Software Update Utility for Nokia N97/N97 Mini. Along with the Python for S60, Nokia has also pushed a sample Python app named Scribble.
Python for S60 is Nokia’s port of the Python language to the S60 smartphone platform. In addition to the standard features of the Python language, PyS60 provides access to many of the phone’s uniquely smartphone-y functions, such as camera, contacts, calendar, audio recording and playing, TCP/IP and Bluetooth communications and simple telephony.
If you liked the sample app Scribblethat Nokia is providing with the python for S60 update, you might want to check the pyS60 application heaven. But make sure it’s compatible with s60v5 as the port api code for s60v3 and s60v5 are different, So many apps that are actually built for s60v3 won’t run on 5800/N97/N97 Mini.
