Sony Xperia P Announced; Comes With a WhiteMagic Display!

Sony has just announced its latest addition to its Xperia NXT series of  handsets, the Xperia P. The phone has an aluminum unibody, and has a 4-inch display with qHD (960×540) resolution, and comes with Sony’s new WhiteMagic display. This helps in making sure that the display is visible easily outside in the bright sunlight.

The Xperia P uses Sony’s own NovaThor SoC, which packs in two Cortex-A9 CPUs clocked at 1.2GHz and an ARM-Mali 400MP GPU. There is also 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory.

The phone also has an 8MP camera, which is also capable of recording videos in full HD (1080p) resolution. The usual bunch of connectivity features like HSPA+ 21Mbps, mini-HDMI port, GPS with A-GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC are also present. Sadly, the handset runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, instead of Ice Cream Sandwich, which is quite a disappointment.

The Xperia P will ship in mid-Q2 of 2012 at an unknown price.

Huawei Ascend D Quad and quad XL Announced; Quad-Core CPU, 8MP Camera and More!

Huawei has just announced its first quad-core smartphone, the Ascend D. The quad-core processor inside the phone is made by Huawei themselves, and is clocked at 1.5GHz. Huawei states that SoC has the ”lowest chip temperature” that helps in reducing the overall power consumption. The company is also dubbing the phone to be the fastest quad-core smartphone, and even compared the phone’s performance to that of the Galaxy Nexus and the Transformer Prime. This 8.9mm handset also has a 4.5-inch LCD screen with a 720p resolution, giving it a density of 330ppi.According to Huawei, the screen also performs excellently outdoors.

The quad-core on the phone is accompanied by a 16-core GPU as well, which according to Huawei is up to 2x times faster than the one on the Asus Transformer Prime and Galaxy Nexus. There is also a 1GB of 64-bit DDR3 RAM, 16GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot.

The phone is not only about power, it comes with a decent camera and other useful features as well. The Ascend comes with a Dolby Digital 5.1 digital sound chip, and Audience earSmart voice technology which improves background noise filtration while on a call. At the back of the Ascend D is an 8MP backlit illuminated sensor, aided by an LED flash and a 1.3MP camera in the front. Like all other high-end handsets out there, the Ascend D is also capable of recording videos in Full HD (1080p) resolution.

The Ascend D comes with a 1800mAh battery, while the Ascend D XL will come with a whopping 2500mAh battery. Huawei’s proprietary power management technology also helps in improving the battery life of the handsets by up to 30%. Thankfully, the handsets will be running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box!

While the Huawei Ascend D is genuinely a very nice effort from Huawei, the problem is its launch date. While Huawei did not mention anything specifically, reports suggest that the handset will launch sometime in Q3/Q4 of this year which is a bit too late.

Nokia Lumia 610 Leaked Ahead of MWC 2012, Runs Windows Phone Tango

Despite a series of price cuts for the Lumia 710, Nokia currently doesn’t have a solid budget Windows Phone offering which could take on low end Android smartphones. However, Nokia had revealed earlier this year that it would be launching budget Windows Phone devices powered by Tango to compete with Android in the entry level smartphone segment, in a bid to capture more market share.

The Nokia Lumia 610 will be one of its first budget Windows Phones which will be launched soon. Nokia is supposed to launch the Lumia 610 at its MWC press conference on February 27, but details of the device have already been leaked out by BGR.

Nokia Lumia 610 Specifications

The Nokia Lumia 610 will come with a 3.2 inch touchscreen display and a 3 MP camera. It will ship with Windows Phone Tango, the latest version of Windows Phone tailored specifically for low end smartphones. It will presumably have 256 MB RAM, and a 1 GHz processor, considering that the Lumia 710 has a 1.4 Ghz processor and 512 MB RAM.

Here’s the best part: it will be priced at around 175 euros, which converts to around $240 or 11,500 INR.

Nokia Lumia 610

Nokia, which is already the biggest Windows Phone manufacturer should see its market share jump after the launch of its new budget smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Announced; Runs on Ice Cream Sandwich

The biggest mobile tech event every year, Mobile World Congress, has not even kick-started yet, and Samsung just unveiled two of its products – the Galaxy Tab2 10.1 and the Galaxy Beam. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is the successor to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, and shares the same internal as it. Wonder why Samsung is calling the tablet the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 then.

Anyways, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has a 10.1-inch PLS TFT screen with WXFA (1280×800) resolution, 1GB of RAM, 16/32GB of internal memory, microSD card slot, a 3MP snapper at the back capable of recording videos in Full HD resolution, and a VGA camera in the front for video calling. The same old Tegra 2 processor from Nvidia clocked at 1GHz does all the chugging work inside. All the usual connectivity features like HSPA+ 21Mbps, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth, A-GPS and Glonass along with the sensors like Accelerometer and Digital Compass etc. are also present.

The only difference between the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is the OS. While the former is running on Honeycomb, the latter runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ruined by Samsung’s TouchWIZ UI. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will hit the markets of U.K first in March, before being available globally.

Microsoft To Release Visual Studio 11 On February 29

If you’re underwhelmed by the impending swarm of Windows Phone device debuts and news, or Microsoft’s plans to drop the Windows 8 Consumer Preview build, perhaps this additional tidbit will satisfy you: It turns out, Microsoft will also be releasing the Visual Studio 11 beta on the 29th.

Packing a new — albeit colorless — design, Microsoft states this will help prevent distractions, bringing the code to focus. Personally, I find the lack of color to be quite depressing; the last thing stressed coders need is for something to push them over the edge when they’re already emotionally unstable from code that doesn’t compile. They’ve also simplified the iconography.

On top of the aesthetic changes, a number of improvements were also made. They’ve reduced the amount of toolbar commands, added workflow hubs and preview tabs.

For a full run down of the new features, head on over to the official blog post.

ViewSonic ViewPad G70

The ViewPad G70 seems similar to the ViewPad E70 which was a budget Android ICS tablet launched at CES 2012. The ViewSonic ViewPhone 4e will sport a 3.5 inch display too, but it will have a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. It will come with a 3.15 MP camera and a slower 650 MHz processor. It will run ICS too, but I’m not sure how well the underpowered processor can handle it.

ViewSonic 4e

ViewSonic ViewPhone 5e

Samsung seems to have made the 5 inch smartphone-tablet space cool again. LG recently launched the Optimus Vu, and now ViewSonic has launched the ViewPhone 5e. It comes with a 5 inch display, and will have a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Other than that, we only know that it will run ICS too, and will be a dual SIM device.
