Vodafone Announces World’s Cheapest Phone, Would Be Available For Less Than $15

While the big names have been busy dazzling the world with the latest and greatest offerings at MWC 2010, Vodafone has unveiled, what it claims to be, the lowest-cost mobile phone on Earth. The Vodafone 150 will be available for less than $15 (Rs 700 approx.) and is targeted at developing countries. It will initially be launched in India, Turkey and eight African countries including Lesotho, Kenya and Ghana.

Mobile phone sales has been experiencing explosive growth in emerging markets like India and total mobile ownership is predicted to reach 5 billion in 2010. SMS has become a way of life even in villages located in far-flung parts of the country. Vodafone is obviously hoping to attract new customers thanks to its ludicrously low price.

While Vodafone 150 is a black and white phone supporting only voice calls and SMS, a comparatively luxurious alternative dubbed Vodafone 250 (priced at $20.00) will include color display and FM radio. Vodafone has stated that a simple payment service will also be built into these ultra-low-end phones.

What do you think of Windows Phone 7? Do you think it will compete well enough with and OS?

Windows Phone 7 Series is now Official

Microsoft has officially announced the next generation of Windows Mobile OS – Windows Phone 7 Series. This OS has been built from scratch and is totally different from the earlier versions. It now focuses strongly on social networking and has integrated support for Xbox LIVE and Zune.

Steve Ballmer has stated:

Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones, said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.

Every 7 series phone is going to have a dedicated Bing button – to enable one click search from anywhere in the phone.

7 series also brings a completely new concept – WIndows Phone hubs. They are meant to club similar items together and thus provide an easy and friendly to browse data. 7 series will have the following six hubs by default:

  1. People: It is Meant for social experience and can bring together content based on someones live feeds from social networks and photos. It can also be used to post updates to Facebook and Windows Live.
  2. Pictures: Helps to share pictures and video to social networks.
  3. Games: Used to play Xbox LIVE games and to see gamers profiles.
  4. Music+Video:Will be used to transfer movies or music from the internet or from a user’s PC. It also has an FM radio.
  5. Marketplace: Allows users to easily discover and load the phone with certified applications and games.
  6. Office:With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents.

Many phone company’s have already started to make phones for this OS and so, we might very well see a working device by the end of this year.

Microsoft Live Press Conference at MWC, Barcelona

Window Phone 7

Today, Microsoft at their press conference at Barcelona, unveiled the Windows Phone 7 series OS. The new Windows Phone 7 OS, is very different from what we have seen from Microsoft all these years. The UI has nice animations and the transitions in the UI is also very smooth.

Along with the change in OS, Microsoft also made changes on the buttons of the phone. From now Windows Phone will have three buttons on the front- start, search and back. The start screen of the new Windows Phone 7 will have tiles.

Window Phone 7 tiles

In these tiles, we can add applications, playlist etc. These tiles will be like an online widget, taking an example of facebook, if your friend updates its status it will be reflected on the tiles. The first thing that Microsoft showed was the calendar. The calendar was very refreshing with views like days, agenda. The calendar detects the phone numbers and address in the browser, in email and messages, so we don’t have to copy paste them.

Window Phone 7 calendar

The next thing was the maps. Zooming is done by pinch and transition is smooth. Windows Phone 7 supports multi touch gestures. The local search engine will be Bing.

Window Phone 7 maps

Microsoft called the Integrated services of the Windows Phone 7 series as Hubs. There are five Hubs altogether. The first is People, which means contacts. Microsoft tried to bring all the info and updates of a particular contact at one place, like info in one pane, latest update on social networking site on the next pane.

Window Phone 7 people

The second Hub is Pictures. The layout is simple with options like albums, all, favorites. Some new panel will be there like recently synced items, which contains the update of the social networking sites and friends. Pictures on the phone can be directly uploaded to facebook, thanks to the integrated application.

Window Phone 7 pictures

The third Hub is the Office. Office opens with options for new pages and recently created items. The middle panel shows the created documents. The right panel is the SharePoint panel. There were no pictures or video shown of the UI. It will roll out soon.

Window Phone 7 office

The fourth Hub is the music and video. Microsoft said that the Windows Phone 7 will be a Zune. Those who are familiar with Zune will find no problem to recognize this. The options under Zune where music, video, podcast, radio and market.

Window Phone 7 music and video

The fifth and final Hub is for games. the game Hub will feature Xbox LIVE as an inbuilt part of Windows Phone 7. There were no demos shown of a game.
