How to Convert Movies for the Sansa Fuze Player

[Windows, Linux, Mac]

Late last year, I spotted a deal that I couldn’t turn down. I was able to buy a Sandisk Sansa Fuze 4G player for about $30 USD. When these were first released in 2008, they were over double that price. I already had an iPod Nano, but I wanted video and photos, and the price of the iPod Touch was over my playtime budget.

If you aren’t familiar with the Fuze, here’s some info from Google Products:

sandisk-sansa-fuzeListen, watch and play all day with 24 hours of battery life and room for up to 2000 songs. The Sansa Fuze from SanDisk is your portable music machine with 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB of storage. Watch your favorite video clips on the Sansa Fuze’s 1.9″ color screen. Jam to FM radio with 40 preset stations, play with the built-in voice recorder, and share your photos wherever you go. Choose from five electric colors: blue, red, pink, black or silver. Incredible battery life in a 0.3″ thin device – the Sansa Fuze marks the next wave of music and video players.

In the past few months, I’ve enjoyed using it at work and play, but there are two things that I definitely don’t like about the Fuze. First, they used a proprietary connector, instead of using a mini-USB. Secondly, they force you to convert all your videos to a weird AVI format, which can only be created by their special Sansa Media Converter (Windows only).

There isn’t much that I could do about the connector, but I’ve finally found an excellent alternative to the Sansa converter, called Video4Fuze. It is supported in Windows, Linux and Mac OSX, unlike Sansa’s lame converter. Now converting full length DVDs for use on my Fuze is as simple as creating an AVI file, then converting it with Video4Fuze. If you are a big fan of downloading Youtube video, the Video4Fuze utility also converts FLV and MP4 videos with no problem.

Dead Island Movie? [Rumor]

One can only expect so much after the poignant Oscar award-winning trailer of the game. Techland’s upcoming zombie survival horror game Dead Island has received wonderful acclaim before any gameplay video was shown. This was purely based on the CGI/Machinima trailer of the game which hits both the emotional and temporal lobes of our brains mellifluously.

The trailer shows a father protecting his family from a horde of bloodthirsty zombies. The family, it seems, came to the island on a holiday and they chose the wrong time of the year to do it. There is no backstory or introduction to the game; just some beautiful (and slightly creepy, given the context) music playing in the background to aid the visuals.

It appears that Sean Daniel, producer of The Mummy and Pootie Tang and Union Entertainment have bought the rights for the zombie outbreak movie. They are also on the look out for the right script for the movie.

Union Entertainment also owns the movie rights for Techland’s Western shooter Call of Juarez that tells the tale of a wrongly accused native American being pursued by a law-abiding, but slightly crazy priest cum judicator with a shotgun.

dead island

The CEO of Koch Media (parent company of Deep Silver, the publisher of Dead Island) said to Kotaku (which alleges that the movie rights may not have been sold to the producers):-

We are looking for quality above all else for a movie based on Dead Island. We want to do it the right way as film realizations of games (or vice versa) usually fail to deliver what the fans were looking for.

We can only hope to see one good film realization of a zombie game before we retire in peace, though. Let’s hope this one is it.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 1 Leaked on Torrents

Hey, Harry Potter fans, don’t visit any torrent sites this week, the latest movie in the franchise, more specifically the second to last one Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 has been leaked on torrents.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows which is set to premier this week on Thursday has apparently been leaked on torrents. However, it contains only the first 36 minutes of the movie according to Torrent Freak.

Released by the group iNK, the leaked copy is not a usual DVD screener. Yes, the watermarks and other screener features are there, but instead of the full film the leaked copy only covers the first 36 minutes of the highly anticipated release.

As you can see, this is more likely than not a leak created to create anticipation of the movie, which has earned billions of dollars for all it’s previous movies in the series.

All in all, leaking just 36 minutes of the movies will create a huge suspense among users who would want to watch the movie, and according to Torrent Freak, the movie is already being searched by thousands of users on BitTorrent sites.

If this leak was a controlled one, it looks like a good move by a movie studio who is playing on user anticipation and curiosity even before the movie has released. Leaking Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows before the movie even released and providing users with a view of what they can watch will in fact draw a few users out of those millions of leechers to the theatres, what say?

Blizzard Holding Out on a Starcraft Movie/TV Show Unless Cameron Directs It?

Blizzard, oh Blizzard I have a love-hate relationship with you. If you were on Facebook, it’d be it’s complicatedbetween us. To seduce me, you make great games such as Diablo, Warcraft and the original Starcraft. Then you progress quite nicely into the comfort phase with Warcraft III and then you go insane and start marketing World of Warcraft and pretty much stop making those games that I loved.
Then you make Starcraft II and suddenly the world is a slightly better place.

blizzard

But now, you’re thinking about making a movie on Starcraft? That too with fluorescent Protoss bashing up colorful Terrans with gooey Zergs involved? Calm down! I must confess that Avatar was not exactly the greatest movie I have seen. Prettiest, possibly but not the greatest. So you do realize that many of us have inhibitions with James Cameron directing a project on Starcraft.

That’s what Rob Pardo, EVP of Game Design at Blizzard was talking about to MTV Multiplayer:-

We’ve always had an interest in seeing our stuff on film or TV. It’s just tricky to find the right partners. We probably could have made a [‘StarCraft’] movie or something on TV years and years ago, but it’s really important to us that we find creative people that are really talented but also really excited about our properties. That’s always been the challenge for us. I think if Jim Cameron came to us tomorrow and said, ‘You want to make a ‘StarCraft’ movie?’ we’d probably sign that.

starcraft

Not that I would not completely mind, but movies based on games are not exactly the best things around. They can be made into fun, but not entirely memorable flicks but they eventually end up being horrible, messy and quite disgusting affairs.

Let’s hope that if you do authorize a movie or TV show on Starcraft, it’s directed by Joss Whedon or someone.

How to Copy DVDs the Right Way with DVDShrink

dvd-ico Have you ever heard of DVDShrink? It’s a freeware program that allows you to make backup copies of your movie DVDs. The shrinkpart of the name of this software is the real power behind it. Movies are usually distributed on dual layer DVDs, while most blank DVDs are only single layer. The DVDShrink program can allow you to shrink a dual layer movie onto a single layer blank disk. However, there are a few tricks you need to know if you want to do it the right way and get the best possible copy.

I’ve used DVDShrink for years, but I never did know the finer points to using it. I always used it to create backup ISO files that I stored on my hard drives. Fortunately, I know someone who does know a good many tricks for using this freeware. Jim Hillier has posted a complete how toon one of my favorite newsletters Dave’s Computer Tips.

Here’s that post: How to use DVDShrink… The Right Way!

Wait! Before you head over there, here are a few things you might want to know.

• Where is the download for DVDShrink? The home site of DVDShrink is at dvdshrink.org, however, you won’t find a link to download it there. I always go to the DVDShrink page at Afterdawn to get the latest version.

• If you have any questions about DVDShrink, just post a comment below and I’ll ask Jim to lend a hand.
